Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

16 hours is a long time to spend with Ryland Grace.
Revisado: 06-25-24
Engaging plot with a really childish, petulant protagonist. The audio narrator doubles down on the sarcasm. I was engaged enough to want to see how the world is saved and finish it, but it felt as if it were written for the protagonists 8th-grade students.

Revisado: 04-02-24
Station Eleven is an excellent story, beautifully constructed, very moving. Themes include death and immortality, civilization and survival. What will we value once we've lost it, and what can we shed?

Historia
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

Immersive World-Building; Spectacular Performance
Revisado: 04-11-22
This is a great story. The author does a wonderful job of recreating a past Harlem and creating memorable, compelling characters. The reader is the best I've ever listened to. I have never heard someone get so much understated effect from even simple speech tags. I wish I could give Dion Graham 10 stars.

The prize-winning and best-selling author of Say Nothing presents a grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. Devastating, Compelling
Revisado: 05-23-21
Empire of pain is a stunning account of the almost sociopathic deeds, over decades, of the plutocratic Sackler family, and their gruesome harvest of billions of dollars made by pumping highly addictive and deadly opioids into the bloodstream of America and the wider world. Patrick Radden Keefe presents a meticulously researched and well-told narrative of three generations of Sacklers and also of the wider regulatory and legal systems that over the years failed to curb their exploitation or hold them to account.
A fascinating book, well narrated by the author, and an education in American oligarchy.

Historia
Early one morning in the remote hill country of Texas, a panther savagely attacks a family of homesteaders, mauling a young girl named Samantha and killing her mother, whose final act is to save her daughter's life. Samantha and her half-brother, Benjamin, survive, but she is left traumatized, her face horribly scarred. Narrated in Benjamin's beguilingly plainspoken voice, The Which Way Tree is the story of Samantha's unshakeable resolve to stalk and kill the infamous panther, rumored across the Rio Grande to be a demon, and avenge her mother's death.

Terrific story, terrific performance
Revisado: 04-27-19
Crook's story has everything: adventure, a quest, a pitch-perfect narrative voice, literary wit, heart, history. The book is a delight, and I was sad to finish it.
Collyer's performance is a marvel, capturing the longingsickness, pragmatism, and exasperation of a young man with a great weight to bear, the fierce monomania and self-advocacy of his sister, as well as the kindness, murderousness, or basic decency of various other characters.

Historia
In 1793 William Smith, a canal digger, made a startling discovery that was to turn the fledgling science of the history of the earth - and a central plank of established Christian religion - on its head. He noticed that the rocks he was excavating were arranged in layers; more important, he could see quite clearly that the fossils found in one layer were very different from those found in another. And out of that realization came an epiphany.
