Amazing mystery!
Revisado: 02-14-25
I have read many Victoria Holt books. Her mysteries are excellent. I figured out who the killer was but I could not nail down all the details of the motive and back story. Holt did a wonderful job making several characters look guilty. The romance was good without being nauseating. The lead female is strong but still feminine. Everything is balanced well.

Historia
Mount Mellyn stood as proud and magnificent as she had envisioned. But what about its master—Connan TreMellyn? Was Martha Leigh's new employer as romantic as his name sounded? As she approached the mansion towering above the cliffs of Cornwall, an odd chill of apprehension overcame her. TreMellyn's young daugher proved as spoiled and difficult as the three governesses before Martha had discovered. But it was the girl's father whose arrogant demeanor unleashed unfamiliar sensations and turmoil—even as whispers of past tragedy and present danger begin to insinuate themselves into her life.

Masterful story telling
Revisado: 02-10-25
I have read many of Victoria Holt's books. My mom got me into them when I was in high school. Her mysteries are marvelous. She hides the murderers well. She truly captures the art of Gothic romance. Leads me convinced that England must be full of old manors up on cliffs full of tragedy, mystery, These books are fun to read and are very suspenseful.

Excellent, Exciting Story!
Revisado: 11-25-24
Griffin's stories are not only exciting, but they are also very educational. To those of us who have never served in the military, but are simply curious, Griffin's books are very helpful. I have been reading his Semper Fi series. This is the first audio version i've done. I love the characters and my ever growing desire to learn more history. Looking forward to the next one.

Historia
The "Devil Dogs" of King Company, Third Battalion, 5th Marines—part of the legendary 1st Marine Division—were among the first American soldiers to take the offensive in World World II—and also the last. They landed on the beaches of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands in August 1942—the first US ground offensive of the war—and were present when Okinawa, Japan's, most southerly prefecture finally fell to American troops in June 1945. Ordinary men, the Devil Dogs were asked to do something extraordinary: take on the victorious Imperial Japanese Army—and defeat it.

100% Respect for Our Veterans
Revisado: 10-22-24
Every time one of these men got killed, I wanted to cry. These guys are what my mother refers to as "real men." They weren't saints, but at the same time they didn't back down from what needed to be done.
I read books about Marines or listen to audio books about them for an odd reason--I'm terrified of them. That's due to some bad experiences that it's time for me to overcome. And these memoirs or biographical stories are helping.

The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

Revisado: 10-11-24
Andy Serkis nails another narration. I don't think I have ever come across better adventure stories. I love Sam's loyalty and the courage he finds. I really enjoy all of the characters, but I relate most to the ones no one expects to be a hero.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Revisado: 08-24-24
The Hobbit is a maevelous classic that can be enjoyed by anyone of any age. It is a well-written, marvelous adventure. And as for Andy Serkis... "damn" is all I can say. His vivid narration of this book wasn't just narrated, it was performed. He left me speechless. Naturally, no one can do Gollum quite like him.

Heart-Wrenching, Honest, Thought-Provoking
Revisado: 08-14-24
This book can best be summarized as "heart-wrenching." Civilians listen to the stories about Veterans. We're taught that war is evil, and many times unnecessary. People often say it's about money, revenge, power, or resources. I don't know. I read as much history as I can. I listen to as many first hand accounts as I can. I don't know what to say. I can't explain war. So many books have been written on it, but can anyone truly explain it? I certainly can't. I watch, I read, I listen, I think, and I keep my mouth shut. No one wants to listen to opinions or ideas; they want to throw fits and demand that everyone agree with them. So I choose silence.
When reading this kind of stuff, the worst part is the attitude these men have towards God. Most of the world agrees with them that God is not there because there is so much evil. And that their prayers are only heard by Satan. That was powerful, innaccurate, and yet very understandable. If I saw and experienced what they did, I might feel the same way if I lived through it. I know that most Veterans would rather spit on me than listen to some boring ordinary civilian tell them that yes, God was there. That would lead to fierce anger since I wasn't there. It wasn't MY friends getting killed in front of me. I wouldn't blame them for looking at me in disgust, but I still say that God was there.
It is a commonly held belief that the existence of suffering precludes the existence of God, or if there is a God he is an uncaring God. That isn't true. I don't have time to write this book, and Timothy Keller was the true master at explaining this stuff, but suffering and death do have purpose.
I will not be so arrogant as to think I can logically explain why some innocent 18 year old gets blown up in Afghanistan and how God will bring good from that death. That young man was someone's friend. Someone's son. Maybe he had some girl waiting for him back home. Maybe he had a mother praying for him every day. Maybe he had one-day dreams that would never be realized. It's all so cruel and unfair that young men die like that and so many people will shed tears over it. Nothing will change that fact. But good can come from it. I cannot ease anyone's pain, but I do believe God will when we let him. But again, I can't say these things to veterans. I can read books, but I can't fully understand them. Veterans actually frighten me. I see their pain, feel compassion for them, and yet I feel helpless. I want to do something, but what? Do they truly feel good when we say, "thank you for your service" and put a flag out on Veteran's day?
I can say this much to veterans--You might hate my opinions, but I can offer a hug. I don't fully understand what you're feeling, but I do care. God put love in me for you. It's difficult to understand, but I truly believe that.
This book was an excellent read. It is very thought-provoking, as you can see. He made it personal. This isn't about politics. This is a portrait of real human beings trying to survive battle, trying to overcome fear and pain and confusion. They're struggling to become civilians again. It's a portrait of deep, intimate friendship. Most of us will not experience combat, but this book does give us a closer look so we can at least feel compassion and hopefully show some support.

Historia
Most people think the job of religion is to call people into a life of morality. But Paul says that’s not what Christianity is at all. Gospel transformation is completely different than moral reformation. In Galatians 5, Paul says there are two different reasons you could obey God—and the reason for your obedience makes all the difference in the world. Paul tells us 1) there is a wrong reason for moral obedience, and it enslaves us, and 2) there is a whole other engine for obedience, and it is hope and love. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on ...

We Cannot Earn Salvation
Revisado: 07-30-24
This is one of the most important points in Christian Theology. We cannot earn our salvation. That comes through God's grace. We don't obey to get into Heaven. We obey because we live God.

There have been too many reconnaissance candidates that show up to the course clueless on what Recon is all about. They show up to the Basic Reconnaissance Course and say that they didn’t know they had to swim or didn’t know it would be so physically difficult. This is Marine Recon! There are a lot of resources, including this one, that will give someone at least a taste of what this life is all about. None are as thorough or informational as a book written by a prior Recon Instructor. The Basic Reconnaissance Course is one of the most difficult schools the United States Military has to...

I listened to this because I was just curious. It gives great ideas if you're trying to improve your self discipline or physical fitness. I actually found myself taking notes. I hope young people find this inspiring. We need quality leaders and people with high aspirations. Although few will be able to handle what is described in this book. Also present in this audiobook was a huge missed opportunity to hire a veteran Marine to narrate this. You cannot get away with saying "shit talk" or "blow shit up" in a computer voice. Find a veteran in desperate need of financial support. They're owed so much and will understand the content.
