It’s shorter than the novel but so well-adapted for this more cinematic production it does not feel abridged. I liked the pacing, too.

Historia
After a divorce from her cheating football player ex, PR whiz Kim Matlock would rather drive a pine tree through her walled-off heart than work at the Seattle Wedding Expo. And the last thing she expects is to be grabbed and kissed breathless by a hot giant of a man looking to fend off a stalker. She doesn't want emotional entanglements, but she can't say no to one scorching night with the sexy stranger. To her shock, she finds out afterward that a) he's a pro football player, a.k.a. her kryptonite, and b) she's pregnant.

A solid journey from hole-hearted to whole-hearted. The author didn’t miss a beat. If you’re after a professional
football player hero and strong, professional woman heroine, this delivers all the feels and with plenty of on-page heat. Ably performed by CJ Bloom.

Geneticists like David Reich have made astounding advances in the field of genomics, which is proving to be as important as archaeology, linguistics, and written records as a means to understand our ancestry. In Who We Are and How We Got Here, Reich allows listeners to discover how the human genome provides not only all the information a human embryo needs to develop but also the hidden story of our species.

This is a non-fiction book about human evolution and the narrator did not pronounce Neanderthal correctly. (Hint: The "thal" part of the word is pronounced "tal".) This was very irritating because Neanderthal comes up a lot and the hard-science nature of the book demands accuracy in every aspect of the production. In other words, every time Mr. Lescault mis-pronounced Neanderthal, it pulled me out of the book. Also his vocal style reminded me of a news reporter. I found it ironic because broadcast journalists learn in college how important correct pronunciation is and take care to ensure every word they utter is pronounced right.

Fun story. I enjoy the energy Alyxandra Harvey generates in her female leads. If I ever re-read this novel, it will be with my eyes. The narrator had an odd accent and pronunciation that just did not appeal to me.

Historia
The story of poison is the story of power. For centuries, royal families have feared the gut-roiling, vomit-inducing agony of a little something added to their food or wine by an enemy. To avoid poison, they depended on tasters, unicorn horns, and antidotes tested on condemned prisoners. Servants licked the royal family's spoons, tried on their underpants, and tested their chamber pots. Ironically, royals terrified of poison were unknowingly poisoning themselves daily with their cosmetics, medications, and filthy living conditions.

Horribly Fascinating
Revisado: 02-15-24
The descriptions of palace life in the 17th century French court was an eye-opener as was so many other details of life before effective public health meaures existed. Interesting to hear about - not live through - and made me appreciate flush toilets and sewage processing plants. And then there’s all those chapters about poison and poisoning. Fascinating. Horrible. This was a unique read about yucky, mucky and often disturbing stuff. I recommend it but not for bedtime. Our modern world is far from perfect but it has come a long way for the better in terms of public health and medical treatment.

How the monarchs of England and Scotland met their deaths has been a wonderful mixture of violence, infections, overindulgence and occasional regicide. In Mortal Monarchs, medical historian Dr Suzie Edge examines 1,000 years of royal deaths to uncover the plots, accusations, rivalries and ever-present threat of poison that the kings and queens of old faced.

What a fascinating weaving of history and medicine. I gladly accept vaccinations and treasure flush toilets. As this book shows, lifestyle behaviors are the biggest threat for many of us. Aging is a gift.

Subtle Send-Off
Revisado: 12-01-23
I enjoyed all four books of this series. The story is slightly less lighthearted than previous tales as the children become involved in protecting their uncle from spies. The romance sub-plot is contained to a few sentences until the epilogue. The more mature nature of this story is why I consider it a bridge to Melissa and Dagenum’s full-length novel. As usual for this series, on-page physical attraction is limited to kissing. It’s part of the charm.

Perfect Narrator

Remembering the lead character of this cozy mystery story is a 50+YO grande dame, Blackstone Audio nailed it in its choice of narrator. Oh, and the story is engagaing, too. Low-angst, no heat, just a feel-good Christmas tale. I recommend the series. PS For anyone interested in real archaeological digs happening in the UK, check out Time Team.
