Historia
Holly Fenwick thought she had left her nightmare behind. Twelve years ago, she narrowly escaped the clutches of a brutal serial killer. Now, while she films a documentary in Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders, to recover from her ordeal and rebuild her life, she spots a figure eerily similar to her former captor. She rushes in, only to find no trace of the man but a chaotic crime scene–and a missing woman.

Carried by Performance
Revisado: 04-26-25
Story isn’t great. Feels like a hodgepodge of so many other stories thrown at the wall….What we get is what stuck. Truth be told were it not for Angus King’s extraordinary talent, I would have given up by chapter 5. Despite the excellent performance I cannot recommend this book.

HISSSSSSSSSS
Revisado: 04-19-25
After enjoying the preceding two books in the series I am finding it EXTREMELY difficult to finish the third. Reason being the incessant hissing the female narrator performs with all S’s. It is intolerable. Sssssssara wasssss sooooooo ssssssssad. Speeding up to 150x during the chapters read by the female narrator and turning volume down low made it possible for me to ensure. Barely. Unfortunately, Kathleen/ Cathleen is the female narrator for books 4 and 5 so,this is the last book I will purchase in what is otherwise a very good series.

I agree. Yet using a more widely accepted definition of the word, this writing falls considerably short of the standard. I concede the performance may have been possible to pull the heavy, disjointed story together, but that is a heavy lift for any actor being challenged by a character termed “ a small man in a big body “. I didn’t immediately piece together the implications of this way of being for the feature protagonist, but it was revealed clearly and repeatedly once I began looking for the small minded simpleton characteristics after that first tip off.
Frankly I love a police procedural firing on all cylinders to solve crime. This version features the romance aspect at the forefront which may appeal to other listeners but it’s not for me.

It would be stale saltine crackers topped with anchovies, sawdust and deep fried lady bugs. It’s antiquated, stinks, is so terribly dry, and I’m embarrassed I even tried it.
Hard pass for me from a writing perspective.
Which brings us toANGUS KING. The most succulent, talented, and committed voice actor who graces the digital realm.

Revisado: 02-11-25
This installment of the-series was Shang-hai’d, baked in a pot of offal then coated with year d left over marshmallow candy a d deep fried. Whoopi-weee! A real stinker full of so ma t things no one wants and an extremely unfulfilling ending for two reasons 1. If did. It manifest soon enough. I seriously wanted to punch out when they were haggling over the horrible Chinese carry out but I stayed for Travis yet that was a phenomenal waste of time give. NOTHING HAPPENED. NO scary demise or life saving escape.
I’ll pass on any more books in this series in favor of more substantive literary skill. Performance is extraordinary!

Revisado: 01-01-25
Unimaginative story, expected progression, cardboard characters involved in implausible scenarios stricken with psychologically questionable “inner talk” rampant.
If that weren’t enough, the performance is the most uninspired ever having been delivered. Think reading the phone book, what paint sounds like when it dries, or perpetual scratching of a chalkboard by twelve thousand evil gnomes. truth be told, the monotonous flatness of this performance may be a suitable sleep aid, but when combined with such poor writing it is a hard “no” for me. I cannot recommend this book.

performance excellence, literary dumpster fire. First off I purchase the “box set” because it was a good deal for a bundle of crime:suspense:thriller novels performed by someone I know is an excellent voice actor. I mean how bad could it be? Well I’ll tell ya- R E A L L Y bad. As in these are all childish romance novels masked as crime:suspense:thriller novels. The plots are repetitive across novels / only the names change. The author spends inordinate time on the relationship between main male character and main female character. So much in fact it is challenging to piece together the actual story. I suffered through three 1/2 of the 4 books in the bundle simply because I didn’t want to feel like I Wasted a credit to purchase, yet that is precisely what I feel occurred. Note to self: trust not reviews, nor unknown authors.

I simply cannot recommend this book. The position taken by the author on some important contemporary topics verges on childish. More specifically, the views expressed lack a clear basis and are as murky as they are accusatory. The virtual voice performance of this drivel actually outpaces the quality of content. Shocking.

Historia
Detective Inspector Munro is a burly Scottish policeman who doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Detective Sergeant West is an intelligent young woman, new to the force, with a lot to prove. When a missing person case lands on their desks, Munro is skeptical there is much to it. But their investigation soon comes to some strange findings, and before long a body is found. With a serial killer on their hands, they must act fast to trace a woman placed at the scene of the crime. Yet discovering her true identity, let alone finding her, proves difficult. And as the plot thickens they realise the crime is far graver than either of them could have imagined.

Phenomenal
Revisado: 10-24-24
I started listening to this series with Terminus and was so impressed I looped back to the start and a full on audiobinge has ensued. The pace is perfect, characters captivating, storyline superb and performance phenomenal. Yet the most magnificent aspect, IMO, is inclusion in audible membership. I appreciate having access to a great author’s work unencumbered by the pesky decision “do I buy more credits to hear what happens next or do I listen to a less interesting work that is included with the [not inexpensive ] monthly membership fee?” Fact is even if the more recent installments turn out to cost me additional money/ credits, i will be highly inclined to make the incremental cash outlay due to the immersion with characters and quality of both writing and performance.
