I guess this is a product of its time but...
Revisado: 04-28-25
I hated Drizzzt being a *Good* Dark Elf. I mean what's the point? There's plennnty of *Good* good guys, why make an evil, despicable & generally antagonist Race'd main character go completely against type? It's not heroic, it's not even a novel concept.
Godz, what if they'd done more than just humanized Strahd, instead making him a Hero?!?!?! The story isn't interesting enuff for the twist of *Evil Race, Good Drizzzt*to be the selling point. At least he's not also the overplayed *Reluctant Hero* as well.
Yes, I'm sure it's a victim of its time but still, Salvatore seems hamstrung by the concept. He's a better author than this shows & that's my biggest disappointment. R.A. Salvatore + Evil Drow character coulda been more than this trite & generally staid story.

On a top-secret dive into the Pacific Ocean's deepest canyon, Jonas Taylor found himself face-to-face with the largest and most ferocious predator in the history of the animal kingdom. The sole survivor of the mission, Taylor is haunted by what he's sure he saw but still can't prove exists-Carcharodon megalodon, the massive mother of the great white shark. The average prehistoric Meg weighs in at twenty tons and could tear apart a Tyrannosaurus rex in seconds.

So far, so good, a few hours in but...
Revisado: 03-11-25
The author is already annoyingly repetitive.
3rd time telling us all about the shark photographer that was almost bit in half by one.
Umpteenth time telling us all about the UNS unmanned nautical sub blah blah blah
Do they not actually trust us that we have an ounce of longterm memory dedicated to what we're reading?!?!?!

Historia
Cadia licks its wounds in the wake of the Thirteenth Black Crusade. The heretic forces retreat on all fronts. The day is won. But Lord Castellan Creed cannot rest easy. Something tells him the assault was a mere prelude to something greater, something more final. He is right. Out of the Eye of Terror comes Abaddon the Despoiler, at the head of a warhost unmatched in scale since the dread days of the Horus Heresy. In the face of the looming apocalypse, Creed must weld the champions of Cadia into a bulwark capable of withstanding Abaddon’s fury.

Historia
Even before the doomed mission to Hadley’s Hope on LV-426, Jenette Vasquez had to fight to survive. Born to an immigrant family with a long military tradition, she looked up to the stars, but life pulled her back down to Earth—first into a street gang, then prison. The Colonial Marines proved to be Vasquez’s way out—a way that forced her to give up her twin children. Raised by Jenette’s sister, those children, Leticia and Ramon, had to discover their own ways to survive.

Only a few hours in but there's just nowhere near enough *Aliens* story
Revisado: 04-29-24
There was a lot of non-Aliens stuff. In fact more than actual Aliens awesomeness. The author just rambles about sociopolitical *slice of life* type stuff.
& it's not even AVP-verse world building. That's the worst part. It took me out of the sci-fi & back to real life modern times.
The narrator is more lifeless than the universes androids, too. She's not really narrating, just reading the book.
It's a pretty terrible homage to the titular

Historia
In the city of Queen Mab, nothing is quite as it seems. Pariah, spy and Inquisitorial agent Alizebeth Bequin is all of these things and yet none of them. An enigma, even to herself, she is caught between Inquisitors Gregor Eisenhorn and Gideon Ravenor, former allies now enemies who are playing a shadow game against a mysterious and deadly foe. Coveted by the archenemy, pursued by the Inquisition, Bequin becomes embroiled in a dark plot of which she knows not her role or purpose.

Boring!
Revisado: 01-12-24
I love Eisenhorn & Ravenor, so I really wanted to like this. Bequin was probably my least favorite character tho. But still, I tried...
I want to see where/how the Inquisitor War goes but she's so boring. Everything is in a matter of fact style, No real highs nor lows. & the story is just... nothing for 90% of the novel. A ton of prelude that didn't need to be a whole book long.
The *Abnett-Cult* give it glowing reviews, of course. But if, like me, Dan Abnett can be Hit Or Miss, this is a miss.

Revisado: 12-04-23
The only complaint is that there's no reasonable way to have Boyd in every iteration! [Tho it does scream! for a Justified/Raylan+Boyd 48hrs style minis-series. Just saying!]
Quality narration, juggling a good assessment of character voices.
Pure Justified goodness overall.

Historia
Felix Allsey is a travel writer with a keen eye for the paranormal, and he's carved out a unique, if only slightly lucrative, niche for himself in nonfiction; he writes travelogues of the country's most haunted places, after haunting them himself. When he convinces the owner of the infamous Rotterdam Mansion to let him stay on the premises for two weeks, he believes he's finally found the location that will bring him a best seller. Then things start going wrong: screams from upstairs, figures in the thresholds, and more than what should be in any basement.

Not really a ghosts/supernatural story...
Revisado: 10-22-23
I wanted to like this audiobook. It's well done, no doubt. But it's more drama, far more, than supernatural fare.
Greatly disappointed in that. It really has potential as a supernatural-horror story but... it's just not! It's not even a thriller, instead. It's drama, more than anything else.

The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

Revisado: 10-10-23
A true modern horror story classic! This could be any house in any town & any family.
Creepy almost from the start. With the glut of craptastic horror movies out there, this is a novel just begging to be the next Poltergeist &/or etc..
Will definitively check out more of Bentleys works.
