Historia
It seems like any other day. You wake up, drink a cup of coffee, and head out. But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. The contents of this mysterious box tells you the exact number of years you will live. From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

It’s not the length,..
Revisado: 11-22-23
A 2023 existential awakening !!
Does knowledge of one’s life span necessarily provide a positive influence on one’s life’s choices ?
An excellent look at the implications of knowing your life’s length, short or long ? How would you react if you were told how long you’d live ? What life choices would you make?
The string is a partial allegory of one’s DNA : however, DNA is not the entire determinant. An interesting look at the concept of predetermination !!
Excellent narration !!

Great book about a devastating epidemic
Keefe dissects and exposes the Sackler empire: an American drug cartel responsible for thousands of opiod deaths and not a single family member is ever criminally charged!
The family makes billions from selling and through false marketing claims about the non addictive nature of Librium, Valium, and OxyContin
When ultimately pursued to be made responsible, the family which previously was known for its extravagant philanthropy, pushes all assets of Purdue Pharma into offshore accounts, and essentially escapes justice unscathed.
Brillant book

Timeless Florida book
Revisado: 05-22-23
JDM once agains captures the essence of everything that’s wrong with Florida: retirement communities, Gulf of Mexico developments, and condominium communities in general.
In the wake of the tragedy, trauma, and loss of life from Hurricane Ian, JDM predicted such a disaster in this book written in 1974.
This is a must read for any American considering a move to Florida as a retiree for their golden years : buyer beware!!
The narrator does a 10/10 job with perfect voice inflections and accents.
This JDM novel stands on its own as it addresses the pillaging of tge once beautiful Sunshine State.

A twisted tale of murder in the world of big-stakes bass fishing tournaments. Historia
In 1936, George Orwell went to Spain to report on the civil war and instead joined the P.O.U.M. militia to fight against the Fascists. In this now justly famous account of his experience, he describes both the bleak and the comic aspects of trench warfare on the Aragon front, the Barcelona uprising in May 1937, his nearly fatal wounding just two weeks later, and his escape from Barcelona into France after the P.O.U.M. was suppressed.

Classic which is timely in 2022 almost 100 year after the times it describes in Spain
Revisado: 05-14-22
In light of current events both
in America and Europe, Homage to Catalonia, is a very timely read. The performance by the reader is 10/10. The story is yet another warning about the role of misinformation, propaganda, and the fight for power. The average citizen, no matter the country or place in the societal food chain is manipulated by those in power.
Orwell states there is little factual information about the Spanish Civil War because of the misinformation promulgated by the Fascists, Communists, and the Trotsky/Socialists. History and truth yet again in the eye of the beholder except that for the one truth: innocent people die in all wars.
Great book.

Historia
A classic novel by John D. MacDonald with an exclusive introduction written and read by Dean Koontz. A Flash of Green tells the gripping story of small-town corruption and two people brave enough to fight back, featuring many of the themes John D. MacDonald explored better than anyone in his legendary career as a leading crime novelist. The opportunists have taken over Palm City. Silent and deadly, like the snakes that infest the nearby swamps, they lay hidden from view, waiting for the right moment to strike. Political subterfuge has already eased the residents toward selling out.

Poor Florida . Ruined by developers and rampant pillaging of its natural beauty. This classic story about the sordid and corrupt dredging and development of fictional Grassy Bay off of Sarasota is a perfect example of political corruption in Florida. Money talks. Elmo Bliss is the typical corrupt politician. The book is the classic as promised by Jack Davis in another great Audible book, The Gulf.
10/10 about the pillaging of Florida. The book was written in 1962, but is applicable in 2022

Historia
When painter Winslow Homer first sailed into the Gulf of Mexico, he was struck by its "special kind of providence." Indeed, the Gulf presented itself as America's sea - bound by geography, culture, and tradition to the national experience - and yet, there has never been a comprehensive history of the Gulf until now. And so, in this rich and original work that explores the Gulf through our human connection with the sea, environmental historian Jack E. Davis finally places this exceptional region into the American mythos in a sweeping history that extends from the Pleistocene age to the 21st century.

An incredible work which with great detail explains the Gulf of Mexico from its earliest beginnings
Dr. Davis dissects the Gulf by system: water, sea life, fish, man, etc
I recommend this to any resident of a Gulf state to learn about the special place and ecosystem that is the Gulf of Mexico.
Being a third generation Floridian, the book was very eye opening to the special nature that we call home.

This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting....

Historia
In Chinese, the word for America, Mei Guo, translates directly to “beautiful country”. Yet when seven-year-old Qian arrives in New York City in 1994 full of curiosity, she is overwhelmed by crushing fear and scarcity. In China, Qian’s parents were professors; in America, her family is “illegal”, and it will require all the determination and small joys they can muster to survive. In Chinatown, Qian’s parents labor in sweatshops. Instead of laughing at her jokes, they fight constantly, taking out the stress of their new life on one another.

With subtle emphasis and a gentle voice,
