Historia
Growing up in a Tibetan Monastery, Ten dreamed of becoming a modern-day Sherlock Holmes. So when he was sent to Los Angeles to teach meditation, he joined the LAPD instead. But as the Buddha says, change is inevitable; and 10 years later, everything is about to change-big-time-for Ten. One resignation from the police force, two bullet-wounds, three suspicious deaths, and a beautiful woman later, he quickly learns that whenever he breaks his first rule, mayhem follows.

Excellent talented reader made this come alive
Revisado: 12-12-24
Didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did. Not pure genre literature, not exactly literary, but a convincing and compelling character study. The question remains if all the books in this series will be as fresh, or if the character once established will become repetitive or predictable.

Historia
In 1945, after his capture at the end of the Second World War, Hermann Göring arrived at an American-run detention center in war-torn Luxembourg, accompanied by 16 suitcases and a red hatbox. The suitcases contained all manner of paraphernalia: medals, gems, two cigar cutters, silk underwear, a hot water bottle, and the equivalent of $100,000,000 in cash. Hidden in a coffee can, a set of brass vials housed glass capsules containing a clear liquid and a white precipitate: potassium cyanide. Joining Göring in the detention center were the elite of the captured Nazi regime....

Great reader. Interesting rundown on the final days of the war, insightful discussion of the so-called nazi mind, and a wake up call to all of us. It can happen anywhere.

Greatest reader ever
Revisado: 11-09-24
It really captures an era, and presents a broad picture of gay men in the 80’s-90’s that, unlike most gay men stories I’m familiar with, focuses on them as people instead of it being a story of their sexual activity.

Good reader
Revisado: 06-06-24
Liked learning a few random things about dna and buffalo wings. Disliked that a female author creates a plot that depends on the female lead character needing men to explain everything to her, for example that blood splatter won’t pass through a ceramic lamp and hit the wall behind it. The story is about a pathetic woman gaining ground through mansplaining.

It doesn’t have to have more gritty reality than it does. There ARE happy marriages and solid families, and this book does not gloss over the difficulties and trauma that leads many trans people to despair.

Historia
Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilisation. This is the twelfth expedition. Their group is made up of four women: An anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain and collect specimens; to record all their observations, scientific and otherwise, of their surroundings and of one another; and, above all, to avoid being contaminated by Area X itself.

Surprisingly boring
Revisado: 11-02-23
I had high hopes for this book. The reader is not very good, a monotonous affect made her tiresome. Add to that the one person first person conjecturing narrator… it’s all telling even as it’s showing this other reality. There’s no telling how the narrator might have come across on paper, but this audiobook was surprisingly boring. I got no interest in the narrator as a person so it was hard to get interested in the rest. In the end I felt manipulated by the “you’ll have to follow me into the next book to see what happens” trope. Very disappointing. I won’t be following her.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Terrible, shameful production
Revisado: 07-26-23
The reader is just bad. And the production makes him worse, splicing in segments when he is endeavoring to pronounce at name or foreign phrase at a different mic. The book is so well researched it is a shame it has the shoddiest production of any book I have listened to.

Historia
Still Life with Bread Crumbs begins with an imagined gunshot and ends with a new tin roof. Between the two is a wry and knowing portrait of Rebecca Winter, a photographer whose work made her an unlikely heroine for many women. Her career is now descendent, her bank balance shaky, and she has fled the city for the middle of nowhere. There she discovers, in a tree stand with a roofer named Jim Bates, that what she sees through a camera lens is not all there is to life.

I loved A Q as a columnist
Revisado: 05-01-23
This is a poorly written novel. “She drew in an audible breath. That is, it would have been audible if there had been anyone there to hear… She lived so alone.” Really? So alone she could not hear her own gasp? What keeps the great columnist AQ from writing plausible and engaging fiction is a mystery.
