Historia
Donovan was shot by a cop. Four of the nine shots were lethal or would have been, if their target had been anybody else. The Foundation picked him up, brought him back, and trained him further. “Lethal” turns out to be a relative term when magic is involved. When Marci was 15, she levitated a paperweight and threw it at a guy she didn't like. The Foundation scooped her up for training too. “Hippie chick” Susan got well into her Foundation training before they told her about the magic, but she's as powerful as Donovan and Marci now.

I could not get into the narrator’s performance
Revisado: 04-16-24
The story was good, but I just could not get used to the narrator’s performance. He did not have sufficient differentiation between characters, so in some cases I lost track of who was taking to whom. Some characters sounded so similar, I thought they were the same person. It was just difficult to listen to. But, I did enjoy the story, and the hallmarks of Brust’s excellent writing.

The apocalypse will be televised! You know what’s worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat. And you know what’s worse than that? An alien invasion, the destruction of all man-made structures on Earth, and the systematic exploitation of all the survivors for a sadistic intergalactic game show. That’s what. Join Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world—or just get to the next level—in a video game–like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon.

Amazing audio performance
Revisado: 02-06-24
I loved this book. The premise is admittedly a bit “out there”, and I can’t imagine that reading the text version would be as good as the audiobook. The audio production sells the premise in a way that I don’t think reading the story could. I will definitely be continuing on in this series… I’m hooked!

Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Historia
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Slow start, strong finish

Slow start, and I found the main character’s voice a bit annoying, but it had a strong finish.

Historia
Miah Gray is a 27-year-old former army soldier living in rural New Hampshire with his sister, mother, and her boyfriend. He is plagued by PTSD, finding solace, but not redemption, with the aid of prescribed cannabis. All he wants to do is get high, relax with a good sandwich, and watch a meteor shower with his neighborhood crush, Jen. When the sun's light is blotted out the following morning and the world is plunged into darkness, Miah finds himself locked down with his family, covering windows with trash bags, lighting candles, and following the arcane rules of an ancient prophecy.

This was quite a crazy ride! I loved the premise, and despite a few plot points that are a little too convenient, I loved where this went! The narrator is awesome. We’ll done.

Historia
On the morning of April 26, 1986, Europe witnessed the worst nuclear disaster in history: the explosion of a reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Soviet Ukraine. Dozens died of radiation poisoning, fallout contaminated half the continent, and thousands fell ill. In Chernobyl, Serhii Plokhy draws on new sources to tell the dramatic stories of the firefighters, scientists, and soldiers who heroically extinguished the nuclear inferno. He lays bare the flaws of the Soviet nuclear industry....

Interesting and very detailed… maybe too detailed
Revisado: 07-25-21
I found it interesting, but mostly just for the immediate events of and following the event. This book went into more history of the region, political events, and way too many names for me to keep track of. I think it could have been about half as long, and been more interesting (to me, anyway).

The second book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Caliban's War shows a solar system on the brink of war, and the only hope of peace rests on James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante's shoulders. We are not alone. On Ganymede, breadbasket of the outer planets, a Martian marine watches as her platoon is slaughtered by a monstrous supersoldier. On Earth, a high-level politician struggles to prevent interplanetary war from reigniting. And on Venus, an alien protomolecule has overrun the planet, wreaking massive, mysterious changes.

Revisado: 08-06-18
If you discovered The Expanse from the TV series rather than the books (as I did), reading the books is a great way to tide you over until the next season! There's much more detail, and subtle differences between the TV series and the books, but well worth the time... and the narrator is awesome!

Revisado: 07-24-16
This version (read by Jason Hiner) is so much better than the original. Jason's delivery is natural and conversational, and accurate. Do not bother with the original Dan Patterson version.

Great content... Narrated by a robot
Revisado: 05-18-16
I hate to pile on, but the narrator ruins the audio version of this book. As many. Have said. The narrator. Has a very. Annoying cadence. When reading this book. That's really how the delivery sounds. Not only is the cadence halting, but he really does sound like he's trying to put on a radio announcer or movie trailer delivery. Read this book, but get the Kindle version.

Distracting audio performance
Revisado: 01-25-15
Any additional comments?
I found the narrator's performance somewhat distracting. I don't know if they needed to use a different mic, or maybe they needed a better filter, but I could hear every swallow, lip smack and breath. The delivery often had... awkward pauses.... which sometimes made me think he had stopped, but I think the narrator was just taking a drink of water.
