Great Story, but That Narration...

Great Story. We all know that. Magnificent characters, immense, enthralling universe, and excitement and intrigue abounds!

But Roy Dotrice's female characterizations leave something to be desired.

HOWEVER, all of that boils away to insignificance when you hear his Missandei voice. His Missandei is probably the most offensive thing I've ever heard on Audible, and I listen to Lovecraft, so that's saying something. Imagine someone trying to voice Missandei and thinking "How can I mix a poor Elmer Fudd but do so in a stereotypical 'Japanese' accent that would have offended Bugs Bunny back in 1944?" We're taking complete with the Ls for Rs and everything. I can imagine Dotrice acting like he had buck teeth while he did the voice.

As I said, it's offensive, it's out of place, and it's awful. It's the only accent of its kind in the story, so one can only assume that he chose that accent because it's popular with his racist friends when they have their gatherings where he does that, acts like he's chopping with a tomahawk while saying "bo-bo-bo-bo-bo" the way kids used to do when they were playing cowboys and Indians in 1962, and making inappropriate jokes about fried chicken and grape kool-aid. Basically it's a voice that only an unapologetic racist would even consider doing in the 21st century.

This is a great story, and these are the best quality readings of them. But when I hear Dotrice do that voice, it takes me back to junior high school and all the racist jokes that the ignorant 12 year olds would make in the locker room. Do better, Roy. Apologize and do better.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. Unfortunately this is, hand down, the poorest performance I've ever encountered here on Audible. I can't even finish it. It's just terrible. Poorly cast, mispronounced, awful. If the same narrator does the other two books in the trilogy, I'm out of lych. Not worth it, even a 1/4 the price.

This is just a fantastic book. Well written, well performed, fantastic history. And I can't speak highly enough of Charlton Griffin's narration. As I go through my library, his name comes up more and more. Generally speaking, if Griffin's narrating, it's a fantastic book and is performed very well

What more can you say? Dan Carlin is an absolute champion. His content, outlook, research, and most of all, method of delivery are the new bar for what a history Podcast should be. I actually have a difficult time listening to lots of other podcasts, because Dan's delivery makes others seem cheap and haphazard. It simply doesn't get any finer. 11/10. Top Hole

I've been reading this book every couple of years for the last couple of decades. It may be the finest science fiction work in history. This version of the Audiobook is in keeping with that. Very well produced, directed, and put together, with impeccable voice acting across the board.

With the release of the '21 (or is it '19? '20? I'm so tired of covid delays) version, made all bright and shiny, complete with Momoa's rippling muscles, is a fine enough work made to appeal to as many people as possible (in much the same way as newspapers being written at a 7th grade level. EXACTLY like that). But this exquisitely produced and acted version of the real deal is a much better use of your time and attention.

This was an absolutely wonderful rendition of Polybius' Histories. The text was the definitive resource on the Punic Wars, and in my opinion this version, narrated by Charlton Griffin, is the definitive audio book.

This is, of course, a wonderful work of literature. That goes without saying. But the performance launches it to another level. Few narrators are capable of reading the classics with such passion. This is well worth the listen!
