Historia
There is something profoundly romantic about lost civilizations. Davies peers through the cracks in the mainstream accounts of modern-day states to dazzle us with extraordinary stories of barely remembered pasts, and of the traces they left behind. This is Norman Davies at his best: sweeping narrative history packed with unexpected insights. Vanished Kingdoms will appeal to all fans of unconventional and thought-provoking history, from listeners of Niall Ferguson to Jared Diamond.

Interesting but deeply flawed
Revisado: 04-01-25
The biggest flaw is the treatment of the Byzantine Empire. It is one of the shortest chapters, despite being the longest-lived and one of the largest and most significant “kingdoms” discussed in the book. And a significant chunk of that very limited space is devoted to a discussion of the now-discounted views of Gibbon and other 18th century writers. With so little space, why waste time informing readers about inaccurate views?
For other kingdoms, we get a tremendous amount of detail, not all of which is important, and the book could have benefited from an editor willing to make the author omit less important details. (For example, the chapter on Etruria gives a rundown of the eventual fates of Napoleon’s siblings & his mother, even though only one sibling ruled Etruria.)
Finally, regarding why kingdoms vanished, this reader would have appreciated a recap at the end of each chapter. E.g., overrun by invaders on all sides, being adjacent to a much larger kingdom intent on empire-building, unintentional vanishing due to inadequate succession planning (no heirs), or intentional vanishing due to solving the lack of heirs by naming as heir the monarch of a larger kingdom. The chapter at the end of the book provided a more general overview.

Historia
Fiver could sense danger. Something terrible was going to happen to the warren; he felt sure of it. They had to leave immediately. So begins a long and perilous journey of survival for a small band of rabbits. As the rabbits skirt danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band, its humorous characters, and its compelling culture, complete with its own folk history and mythos. Fiver’s vision finally leads them to Watership Down, an upland meadow. But here they face their most difficult challenges of all.

An entertaining tale with amazingly excellent narration
Revisado: 01-29-25
Although it is about rabbits and is, overall, a gentle tale, it did not read as a children’s book, at least not to this reader, who is well past childhood.
Peter Capaldi’s narration is first-rate. I’ve listened to hundreds of audio books & can think of few narrators I’ve enjoyed as much. Capaldi’s narration is up there with Patrick Tull’s narration of Patrick O’Brien’s Aubrey/Maturin series and Steven Pacey’s narration of Joe Abercrombie’s First Law Trilogy. I wish I could have given him more than 5 stars. The El-Arairah stories are a special treat, thanks to both Adams, who creates a wonderful mythology for the rabbits, and Capaldi, who portrays the rabbit story-tellers as marvelously skilled.

Compelling characters, interesting world
Revisado: 12-12-24
In the Afterword, Sanderson writes, “Character & emotion are the true magic,” which is certainly the case with this novel. As I listened, I couldn’t stop thinking about the main characters—what would happen to them, what would they do next? The two main protagonists both persevere in daunting situations where they know they are missing key pieces of the puzzle (about their situation or other characters).
The world of Elantris is engaging and is revealed to the listener (or reader) over time, allowing for plot developments to be all the more surprising.
The narration is excellent, with different voices for major characters that (to this listener, at least) fit the characters very well.

The year 12,090 AD. It is a dark time for the world. Humanity is just crawling out from under 300 years of domination by the race of vampires known as the Nobility. The war against the vampires has taken its toll; cities lie in ruin, the countryside is fragmented into small villages and fiefdoms that still struggle against nightly raids by the fallen vampires - and the remnants of their genetically manufactured demons and werewolves.

Vampires + sci-fi = quirky and entertaining
Revisado: 11-06-24
The world of this novel has an entertaining mix of supernatural and sci-fi elements. This world, plus a plot that barrels along, more than compensates for some characters being over-the-top & others being caricatures.
The narrator took some getting used to. His normal narration pace was irritatingly slow, but he speeds up quite a bit with some of the dialogue, which made it hard to find a listening speed that sounded OK. (I ended up using alternating between 1.15 and 1.2.)

Very entertaining
Revisado: 10-20-24
The tale involves an interesting cast of characters with multiple villains, protagonists who keep trying despite terrible risks, and important characters with significant weaknesses. The plot gallops along with many twists and turns.
The narration is very good. There are a few instances of dialogue that I found hard to follow because I couldn’t discern any difference between the voices of the characters.

A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants can change their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters. Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement.

Suspenseful plot and a moving friendship
Revisado: 10-17-24
The aliens and their world are complex and interesting. The author presents a thoughtful picture of how cultural differences across species of humans can significantly impede communication, and when the envoy is clueless (as he was at the outset), so was this reader. I was close to stopping early on, but when I continued, I felt well rewarded by a suspenseful plot and a moving friendship between two characters.
The narration was quite good, although for me, it would have been better if the two main characters had been given distinct voices.

A grim story well told
Revisado: 10-14-24
The book is clearly written and the narrator does a good job. The tale itself is necessarily grim, and, thankfully, the author doesn’t sensationalize it.

Very enjoyable mystery with special sauce
Revisado: 08-13-24
The supernatural is the special sauce for this very satisfying murder mystery. The author works in supernatural elements in an understated, matter-of-fact way, which is probably why they’re able to mesh with the police-procedural plot line. It’s astonishing to think that this book was the author’s first novel and that it sat, unpublished, in a drawer for over two decades.
The narration is very good.

A totally unexpected and very strange world
Revisado: 07-11-24
This book takes you into a very strange reality which often superficially resembles the present-day United States, and this contrast was continually intriguing. It’s not always an enjoyable listen, in part because many of the main characters seem quite unlikeable, though I found this to be in a can’t-look-away kind of way. Also, there are moments that are hilarious. To this reader, at least, the plot was never predictable, and a few of its surprises were quite wonderful.

Y is for yawn
Revisado: 07-09-24
This book failed to move me. The nature writing and the author’s narration of the recording are both very well done. The memoir is about a very introverted period in the author’s life and the outcome is a claustrophobic narrative that, for this reader, was only somewhat interesting. I also found the frequent digressions into a mini-biography of TH White to be irksome—of limited interest and detracting from my ability to get into the memoir. (To be fair, the Samuel Johnson Prize judges applauded this amalgamation of genres.)
