Typical Backman, funny and ironic, an illustration of human frailty and strength. Love the story but the narrator did tend to gild the lily. It would be even better read with more subtly. I almost quit listening a few times because narration was getting on my nerves.

Relieved to get to the end

Please ditch Carrie. She’s been on your shelf of ideas far beyond her sell-by date. She’s become the boring go-to antagonist and most of it ain’t plausible nor interesting.

Marino and Dorothy continue to get more annoying. Listening to a drunk Dorothy whine for that long was torture.

Too many ppl are emo/angry as per usual and the negativity is a downer. Maybe if the narrator didn’t shout so much it would be a more pleasant listen.

I’ve been reading/listening since the first Scarpetta novel. This is better than the super duper conspiracy-laden stories but I don’t think I’ll bother with the next one. :(

Boring and sanctimonious

No desire to stick around to hear the ending. Tired of the self-righteous anti-white language. This is a thinly-disguised political statement with a weak story and all the characters seem to be morphing into one kind, gentle, vacuous being without spirit.

I’ve listened to all the books in this series but this one pushes an agenda too much to be believable.

10x longer than necessary

Okay story, drawn waaaaay out. Sporadic action and too much blather.

I wanted to see how it ended but got bored with endless emotional monologues and descriptions so skipped through a bunch and listened at 1.2-1.5 speed the last couple hours.

The narrator takes forever just to say the time as the story flips back and forth between past and present. Overly dramatic telling.

Annoying unlikeable characters

Weird codependent family with not much strength of character. Lots of feelings and descriptions, little action, not much point to the book. Kind of middle schooly.

The diabetic cat was the only one with grit and personality. I usually enjoy Scottoline but not this book.

Terrible narration, hard to follow

Whoopi is apparently a much better actor than narrator. This is torture. Not sure if I can get through it, hard to follow the story. It’s jerky and it sounds like a little kid is reading.

What happens to families without boundaries

The best part is how the author totally nailed the psychology behind unhealthy family connections. It’s why the ending is hard to predict. Easy listen, hard to put down and the characters are perfectly obnoxious and/or self-serving (with a few exceptions) and all are fun to get to know.

Obligatory Mitch & Abby follow-up

Grisham’s heart just ain’t in this one. Instead of groundbreaking like your typical Grisham, this one is a weak imitation. Mitch and Abby are 2D and eat too much (don’t try that past 45, Abby!) and the story, I swear I’ve read it a few dozen times. I don’t mind Ballerini, don’t love his voice, but it’s harder to positively rate the narrator when he doesn’t have much to work with.

Gritty and infuriating

Impressive that the author was able to write so well from the perspective of teens, and in a nuanced manner. Made me realize how we need to take care of them and offer guidance and love instead of assuming they just enjoy being turds. Well. Some do. But we shouldn’t make sweeping either way. The book is not just about that but it’s a central theme. The infuriating part is how corruption ruins lives just so one person can maintain power.

Couldn’t stop listening

The story is both grisly and flowing, told from the perspective of the innocent and naive. I love how the perpetrator was marginalized; the murderers behind all highly publicized murders should be given the name The Defendant rather than being glorified.

It doesn’t sound like fiction.

Had a hard time following the people and timeframe as it bounced back and forth but still, it’s an amazing book.
