Historia
In the spring of 1983, massive flooding along the length of the Colorado River confronted a team of engineers at the Glen Canyon Dam with an unprecedented emergency that may have resulted in the most catastrophic dam failure in history. In the midst of this crisis, the decision to launch a small wooden dory named “The Emerald Mile” at the head of the Grand Canyon, just fifteen miles downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam, seemed not just odd, but downright suicidal.

Well written, great story and great characters. I couldn't stop listening. It is interesting to now look at another chapter for Glen Canyon and the reservoir. If it wouldn't have been for the loss of lives, I would have rooted for the river over the dam in '83.

Historia
Famed investigative journalist Eric Schlosser digs deep to uncover secrets about the management of America's nuclear arsenal. A groundbreaking account of accidents, near misses, extraordinary heroism, and technological breakthroughs, Command and Control explores the dilemma that has existed since the dawn of the nuclear age: How do you deploy weapons of mass destruction without being destroyed by them? That question has never been resolved - and Schlosser reveals how the combination of human fallibility and technological complexity still poses a grave risk to mankind.

We have been so very lucky
Revisado: 05-11-24
In the very accessible manner of FFN, the author walks us back through a world we were largely oblivious to. This a recounting of nuclear planning, both good and bad, bureaucracy, denial, self-interest, and near destruction of the planet.
A great listen.

Wished I'd listened to the epilogue before buying
Revisado: 05-01-22
It was okay and I finished it. I listen to a fair amount in this space. Not terrible but not amazing. While literary review is not my wheelhouse I felt the dialogue was sometimes stilted and the authors seemed to underestimate the reader at times. By that I mean they felt the need to explain every new technical term or toy. The submarine engagements were most interesting and the players (nations) are timely. Narrator was great.
As this is clearly a political space now, the author (at least one the one who did all of the talking on the epilogue) revealed himself to be a fan of 45 and a critic of the current administration's foreign policy. I'm not a supporter of Russia. Won't send it back but won't buy another. I'm sure others will make up for my choice here.

Historia
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Interesting Concept - Weak, Partisan Vehicle
Revisado: 01-03-16
I submit that if, as suggested in Newt Gingrich's forward, Forstchen wanted to educate the public about an under appreciated threat he should have written a technical paper. The vehicle for communication here is a weak and tedious story with dialog that "reads" like a string of sophomoric cliches.
Overlooking the weak prose would be possible if it weren't for the pervasive partisan themes that fill every scene. Good, conservative, religious, military vs the bad, liberal, hippie, weak, immoral, shaved-headed, tattooed, other. This is a simplistic tale of the author's view of good vs bad that quickly becomes painful.
Why should we believe the information presented in this book when the protagonist (and I suspect the author) doesn't believe in human caused global warming? This is probably the biggest failure for me as his credibility is shot. The author should read the U.S. DoD's Quadrennial Defense Review on the subject.
On a positive note the audio performance was good in terms of quality and use of different, distinct voices.

A twisted tale of murder in the world of big-stakes bass fishing tournaments. Historia
Andrew Yancy—late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office—has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing).

Why so hard on Arte???
Revisado: 08-20-15
Where does Bad Monkey rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Near the top for laughing out loud while listening.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
There was something surprising and/or humorous around every corner.
What does Arte Johnson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Timing and delivery. I loved his work and hope he reads another one! For crying out loud he's a comedian.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A hilarious distillation of the absurd and preposterous in south Florida.
Any additional comments?
I think there must be some "sour grape" consumption by many of the other reviewers. The story is a scream and the narrator does a great job.

Good plot/story, tough listen
Revisado: 08-20-15
If you could sum up A Delicate Truth in three words, what would they be?
Rich, layered and interesting.
What did you like best about this story?
The normality of the characters.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of John le Carré?
Another Brit?
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No
Any additional comments?
The audio was tough to listen to as every "s" was a sibilant whistle in my ear. It was a significant distraction from the story. This was a problem on 2 of 3 audio devices I tried.

It is The Campus. Secretly created under the administration of President Jack Ryan, its sole purpose is to eliminate terrorists and those who protect them. Gratuitous Political Partisanship

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The old Clancy.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Not Clancy and his assistant.
Any additional comments?
Unnecessary and unappreciated politics that surely appeal to some. The in "battles" in Red Storm Rising and Patriot Games didn't showcase fealty to the "GOP".I'm done with Tom. Paid commercial product placements in cinema are one thing, paid political adverts quite another.
