Historia
Two weeks of rest and recuperation - that's what the doctor ordered. Detective Sergeant DC Smith could listen to some music, make some of his own, and maybe even catch up on his reading; he is almost looking forward to it. And then there is a knock on the door. It's only his next-door neighbor, but it is the beginning of a sequence of events that will bring him face to face with some of the darkest episodes and the most dangerous people from his own past.

my favourite of all the series, this puts such a human face on the sectarian violence of northern Ireland. I absolutely loved it.

When Rae Sutton’s mama passes away and leaves her the house where she grew up, Rae can’t imagine how the little old place might restore her broken life. Mourning the recent loss of her marriage, she takes the house and settles back into her tiny hometown with her fourteen-year-old daughter, Molly Margaret, and their overweight dog. There she’s embraced by her mother’s close-knit circle of friends, the Third Thursday ladies.

Not for me
Revisado: 02-22-23
The narrator is the least of this story's problems. I kept listening in hopes the basketball coach was gay - at least it would add another dimension to this parody of women and southern life.

You need a whiteboard
Revisado: 02-05-21
I was going to give this two stars, because 1 star is reserved for books I can't finish. But by the end I was so annoyed that I had to give it one.
You need a white board to keep track of the characters and their relationship to each other. There is an enormous cast of possible bad guys, while at the same time there are too many unlikely connections between each of them. And none of them are likeable.
The plot line is complicated and convoluted.
The narrator's voice made it hard to follow from the start. I kept zoning out, and had to forcefully make myself return to the story. All the characters sound the same and it was really hard to distinguish them. That, coupled with the huge number of characters made it really hard to follow.
I'm all for a good revenge novel. but the plot was so convoluted that by the time the book was wrapping up, all I felt was relief, not that blaze of righteous glory you get when the good guys win.

I liked the premise of the book, but the writing was flat and I never felt I was actually experiencing events or invested in the characters. I liked it better in the beginning when I thought it was a biography and not a novel.

I was going to give it three stars for an average "thrilling suspense novel" until the last chapter, which I found really hard to swallow. And do people really eat that many muffins?

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

The criminal arms war
Revisado: 03-01-16
Apparently there aren't enough "normal" crimes to go around. A bad guy who kidnaps women and chains them in the basement isn't enough - no, he has to sew their eyes and mouths closed and sew them to the mattress for our titillation.
CSI and Criminal Minds suffered from the same arms war. They started out as excellent, compelling crime dramas, but several seasons in, each show had to outdo the previous. Each bad guy was more bizarre, more psychotic. I quit watching, and I quit Criminal half way through and won't be picking up any more Karin Slaughter.

Ordinary average
Revisado: 01-15-16
I was interested in the beginning: the author did a good job of setting the mood of 1961. And the theme "why would God allow this?" gave me some pause for thought. But as the book moved on, the sheer numbers of broken people became unbelievable and the spiritual journey of forgiveness hijacked the story. Another one where I couldn't wait for it to be over.
