a warning first and foremost.
if you're going into this book expecting a bit of a look into the raptors space Marine chapter... this is not the book for you. I was hoping for the same thing.. it's just not the focus sadly.

no this is a Tau story through and through.
with all the good and bad that entails.

that being said the book is actually pretty good.. it does drag on in parts. I feel like the book could be 3 hours shorter and nothing significant would be lost.

however the greatest thing about this book is the characters.. you got troops of every sort... from the grim and stoic to the naive and hopeful.

you even get a crazy side character with the Kruit that I just love!

and an entire storyline about a clone trying to come to terms with being their own person.

all in all worth your time, but just know what you're getting into.

this book is a great representation of the old adage the greater they are the greater they fall.

taking a legion that was once among the greatest representation of their ranks.... brought low to the depths of depravity.

probably the best book in the series so far save from maybe the first.

I really like this one. it's interesting to see the earliest example of a space Marine worshiping the emperor (outside of the early word bearers.)

in this one you pretty much get the same story as you did in the last book but from a completely different perspective. and oh boy would a perspective!

the voice acting overall was good except for when it got to the Primark rogaldon, The voice they did for him just seems a little bit too whiny.

I also like that the half heard finally gets his time to shine!

((and some of the betrayals I just did not see coming!!))

overall it's not the best book in the series, but I can certainly appreciate it for what it is.

the traders finally reveal their hand and get to the bloody work of rebellion.

this was the least entertaining of the first three books, that's not to say that I didn't enjoy it.
rather the first two books were simply so good that this one was dulled by comparison.

the story suffers from a few too many characters to keep up with, but in an a large epic like this that is to be expected.

I was genuinely surprised at some of the people who ended up on the loyalist side. serious props to the writer for that.

on to book four! let's see if the death guard can provide a more entertaining tale.

this was the grim dark tragedy that I was hoping for!

almost every character got the end that they either deserved or that you were hoping for... save for one exception..

the combat in these books are always so visceral, feeling somehow more grounded (well as grounded as you could get with genetically enhanced super soldiers.)

I know this is the end of the trilogy... but I deeply hope there are other books about the warband to come.

This book more than the other 2, you can fully see they are THE BAD GUYS!

but until then we know that our winged boys will be fighting the bad fight, in midnight clad.

it really keeps getting better and better.

book two seas the night Lords in a more desperate situation than before.

relying heavily on a new navigator, and desperate for ship repairs.. the entire book felt like a fight for survival.

the description of how they get new initiates was truly bone chilling and a bit depressing, but in a way that was expected for a book like this.

I love that we got to see the red corsairs their tyrant is truly more intimidating than the exalted.

the introduction of new and old space Marines into the mix as well as mortal characters made the entire thing feel fresh.

one more book to go in the trilogy and I know I'm going to cry at the end 😭

I've heard great things about this trilogy, and so far it has not disappointed.

the overall story was fairly to the point and easy to keep up with.

a problem that a lot of books with stories with space Marines is that the Marines blend together a lot. however each character in this was easy to tell from one another. partly because of the writing and partly for the superb voice acting.

I also greatly enjoyed how the ship itself seemed like a character in its own right.

I look forward to jumping into the second book very soon.

first things first when going into the story know that it's going to be a lot of battles. there is bits of character work thrown in there of course and what we get is amazing. but the vast majority will be combat, so just be aware of that going in.

the unique chapter culture is the main reason to read this book.
you really feel their desperation for both new recruits and especially librarians, viewing every person and item as a resource of some value.

the concept of the red tide is very grim dark (as it should be) and their unique battle style of bloodlust but heavily restrained was interesting.

also the captain of third company was an interesting character in his own right. but the truly interesting ones where the librarian and his maybe soon to be apprentice. whenever they enter the story was when I felt myself getting pulled back in.

and of course the night Lords are a treat every time they're in pretty much anything.

from beginning to end this is 100% grade A space wolves.
with the interesting premise, ""what if Loki was a space Marine."
everything about his design is amazing, I particularly like the fact that he has two weapons that suit his personality.
a quick lightning claw, and a plasma gun, ((which are well known for being temperamental within the world))
as well as what is basically a displacer clue. making it harder for enemies to hit him.

the villain was a superb mirror to the trickster himself, always hamming it up whenever he was ""on screen"" so to speak.

I thought the cat and mouse game was going to go on a bit too long but it ended at just the right point. right before it was beginning to feel tedious.

and the ending, oh boy the ending, worth a read just for it alone.

we also got to see a space Marine character outside of the salamanders who actually seems to care about his people, not just viewing them as simple numbers on a board.

-the good-
I like the fact that this book shows the primarchs are not infallible, and in fact can be undone by their own hubris.

this book does a good job of describing how Corax has such faith in the emperor's plan that he can't see the force for the trees.

most of the side characters were forgettable except for the one who had this melancholy mental deficiency that seems to affect some of the legion.
seeing him work through his deep depression and bloodlust, was the most interesting part of the book.

the ending very much saved the entire secondary plot. with a compelling ""end the boss".

-the bad-
the secondary plot seemed almost irrelevant until the end... only coming into the story in short bursts and leaving very little impact.

the main enemy seemed more like a cartoonish villain than a realistic empire.

I wish that we could have seen more interaction between Corax and his brothers... we only got a short bit with him and Guilimen at the beginning.
