I have tried to read many other P&P “spinoffs” and this is truly the best. The author writes well in a historical style and often uses Austeny phrases in a natural way without it feeling mimicky.
I hate when authors try to mimic another writer and it just feels cliche or cartoony- or they try to write historically but use modern sentiments and standards! This book does neither. It truly feels like an expansion of the P&P universe and gives new perspective and interest to ALL the beloved (and unbeloved) characters, not just Mary.
Mary is, in many ways, only a trope in the original and The Other Bennet Sister gives her the complexity and lovabilty of any Austen heroine.
I enjoyed rereading P&P after listening to this and feeling like the story was new again. I am currently listening to this for the second time. The narrator does a lovely job and the story is delightful.

This was delightful and captivating for all my kids, aged 6-12. It’s a very unique premise for a story and not at all like the movie from the 90s!
The narrator did a great job, although I was suspicious from the sample that her voice would be boring or grating- it wasn’t at all.

This book is beautiful and slow- a book about creativity, motherhood, self, identity, faith, art and life! It feels as if it could have been written in 2022- all of it is still relevant and thought provoking

I originally had this as a CD set- having already paid for it once, it was hard for me to buy it again.
But the truth is, it is just so good. It is worth buying and worth owning. We have listened to it multiple times. Neil Gaiman is a phenomenal writer and honestly- I don’t believe his books should even be read by anyone but him! Excellent narrator.
Currently listening again with my kids, 5, 8, and 11.
The youngest is missing things, but all are enjoying.

Listened to this version with my kids. The narrator sounds like the Alm-uncle, or Heidi’s grandfather is telling us the story.
Having only seen the movie as a child, I was surprised and delighted that this is such a heartfelt, sincere, and Christ-centered book about redemption, community, love and forgiveness. It was enjoyed by my 4 kids (ages 9 and under) and equally enjoyed by me!

This book is not really a “survival” story, as the family has nails, guns, canned food, dishes, etc- even livestock! The book is mostly a weird combination of the know-it-all dad being preachy and the family killing various animals in order to eat.
“Ah! A rare and interesting iguana! Let’s stab it in the eye. Ooh, a monkey! Our dog will tear it to shreds. A flamingo, a lobster, a shark. Let’s shoot them all!”
If you’re looking for a “religious” classic for kids, read Johanna Spyri, George MacDonald or Frances Hodgson Burnett instead. If you’re looking for a survival story, read My Side of the Mountain or Hatchet- even Little Britches or Little House on the Prairie is more adventuresome than this.
That all being said: the narrator did an excellent job and the abridgment was well-done. They kept the original complex language and didn’t resort to “talking down” to the young audience.

My kids (aged 4-9) have all loved listening to this. I preferred the Henry Huggins books and narrator, but this was my kids’ favorite. It’s so long, and so relatable to my kids (and even me). We’ve listened to it more than once!

Scarlett Johansson seems to reading. Reading the way that 6th graders read in front of a class of their peers. Slow, disinterested and slightly confused.
In fairness, maybe it gets better- but I could barely last through the first few chapters.

This is so fun- for the first 30 hours. 😂 Then it starts to feel never ending... but it still a satisfying and excellent book, and the narrator is so phenomenal. Each of his characters is well-developed and unique.

My kids loved the Hobbit, and have been begging to read the LOTR as a family, but they’re still young. I hoped this would be a good intro before they read the books themselves, but I have to pause it and explain what is happening every 5 minutes. Sound effects and dialogue are not enough to tell this story, unless you already know it.
I’ve been disappointed in how many things are missing, disappointed that the hobbits voices all sound the same, and disappointed that Aragorn has a LISP. (He does a great job, but it’s hard to imagine him as being a manly ranger when he has a goofy speech impediment.) Will probably exchange this title, which is too bad. I had my hopes up!
