I loved this story. Especially the protagonist, Faith , who a is feisty , badass young woman. On the day of her sixth birthday, complete with a birthday party , thugs broke in and started slaughtering her family. Faith saw a chance to escape. Twenty years later, Faith still remembers the face of the man who killed most of her family She calls him Ratface. Her goal ... kill him.

Hal, that's what they called her, lived alone in a small flat. Her rent was overdue and her job as a "mystic" or card reader wasn't enough to get caught up, so when a notice came in the mail saying she was a beneficiary in a will, she thought that this might be the answer to her overdue rent. There was only one problem. She had the same name as the deceased woman, but she had no knowledge of her. After due consideration she decided to formulate a little white lie and go see what was going on. Little did she know that she was about to get tangled up in web of deceit and murder.
My only complaint is that the audio book was 14 hours long.

Calla had never had friends. She was used to being called names because of the way she looked; she has vitaligo, the same thing Michael Jackson had. It causes white patches that are very visible on the skin. She worked at the library where she felt less noticeable than at most jobs. One day at work she got a blinding headache causing her to fall to the floor followed by a seizure. When she woke up she found herself in the hospital surrounded by lots of people.
She was told by the doctor that she had a brain tumor. With a limited number of choices available, she allowed Dr. Cho to do surgery and try to remove the tumor. It wouldn't be an easy thing to do because her tumor was a Glioblastoma, a tumor that spread out like octopus tentacles. Very nasty tumors that are almost always fatal. But when Dr. Cho preformed the surgery, the tumor was gone. Thus begins a long twisted journey for Calla.

I am definitely a person that tends to like non humans better than many humans. My upbringing probably had a lot to do with that. We had a large assortment of animals over the years and I have always had a liking for all the "vets" my beasties have seen. This book is basically in two parts. The first part tells of how Philip Scott happened to become a veterinarian. It started with a gerbil. Dr. Scott goes on to tell what a veterinary practice is really like and answers questions about it such as 'why is a visit so damn expensive.' The second part is delightful stories about some of his patients and their people. If you are a pet owner, you will love this little book.

This story had me from the first paragraph. A mystery featuring a great host of characters, many of them police persons. It is a very long Audible book which gave the author lots of time to introduce characters and situations and then go off in a different direction. Joe Barrett's narration was perfect for this story. Highly recommended.

Mackenzie really wanted to join the FBI. She had solved a big case in Nebraska while still an undergraduate but was transferred to a big city branch of the Academy when they needed help. She was known to do things her own way which didn't usually didn't sit well with her superiors.
Nude female bodies were turning up in the landfill and Mackenzie and her assigned partner were hopeful they could catch the stone cold killer before another dead woman surfaced at the landfill.
I enjoyed the way the story was presented. Introduce the killer and Mackenzie, then follow McKenzie as she tries to figure out who the killer is and catch him, her way.

A society based on the words of the ancestors and passed on to the men demands that the women and girls obey them. Men and women who reach the age of 40 are required to drink a mix that kills them because they are considered useless at that age. Men are allowed to sleep with their daughters until they reach "fruition" at which time they are married off to which ever man wants them. The story follows a group of young girls, some of which just accept things as they are. Some aren't exactly thrilled by the words of the ancestors and rebel by doing things like spending the night on the beach instead of going home. A few rebel much more seriously.

We see all sorts of things on TV, but that's not really how things are, right? According to Glenn Langohr, the author, that is the way it is, at least in the prisons where hard core criminals are housed. He should know. He was one of the prisoners. It is hard for me to imagine how anyone can live in that atmosphere and without becoming hardened to things that go on there. And if one of them happens to get released, how can we expect them to behave like those of us that have lead "normal" lives? Langohr tells it like it is.......brutal, bloody and sometimes deadly.

I have been interested in the transgender issue since Christine Jorgensen because the first transgender person. She was male and became female. Since then I have read five other books either written by a transgender person or about a transgender person. I can understand the physical part of the transition but the psychological part that the person lives with before making the decision to fully transition has never been told to my satisfaction. This book tells the whole story.
Another reason this book is unusual is that it starts with a child, not an adult. Nicole was born as an identical twin. She was born as a male child. In our society today there is a major disagreement as to whether a young child should be allowed to dress as their gender identity. At what age should that child start hormone therapy? How about the surgical part of transition?
Amy Nutt covers the emotional, physical and legal issues clearly and understandably.
Whether you agree or disagree with the transgender issue, this book will open your eyes to the
myriad of things it involves.
