Orphan realizes he needs therapy. Awful book.
Revisado: 04-10-25
This is essentially a story of an orphan who levels up and realizes he needs therapy. That’s it. Characters are 1-dimensional. Protagonist is a Gary Sue. The plot doesn’t exist. 80% action; 20% dialogue that’s nothing more than exposition. Very mediocre writing style that would be acceptable if the story was better, but unfortunately, the story is absolute crap. I’ve read hundreds of fantasy books and dozens of books in this genre and The Path of Ascension is one of the worst books in the entire genre. If all you want is action and descriptions of the magic system, then you’ll like it.
Cradle by Will Wight is a better version of this idea in every way possible. I don’t have ridiculously high standards to enjoy a book. One of my favorites is All the Skills and I’d be the first to admit that it’s objectively mediocre, but this book is just bad. Don’t waste your time.

Having survived their journey into the Dark Heart, Arthur and his dragon, Brixaby, have a new goal: complete their Legendary card sets. Unfortunately, the next Legendary card is locked away in Blood Moon, a hive with a reputation for chaos, lawlessness, scourgling eruptions, and—rumor has it—dedicated dragon hunters. Still, Arthur and his retinue feel they have little to fear. Then again, they also don't have much knowledge of what actually lies ahead.

Weakest book
Revisado: 03-25-25
This is by far the weakest book in the series but it’s still enjoyable to listen to. I hope Rae steps it up a notch on the next one. There just wasn’t enough here. It felt like a massive step down from the previous entries. But like I said, it’s still fun.

Just as good as the first book and comes with an impactful ending. Highly recommend. It’s a classic that feels modern.

Brilliant
Revisado: 01-31-25
This book from 1987 is highly underrated and stands out among other books written in this era. This is an excellent political thriller with a truly strong female MC. Take note Hollywood, this is how you write a strong female character.

Historia
Morgan used to be a pretty normal guy. He went to college by day and played online games by night, leading his guild into new conquests - until he got hit by a car and a dude wearing a wet suit appeared in front of him. The man offered him a new chance at life in a world he had created, a world with similar rules to the games Morgan loved to play. There is the promise of great rewards and power, he says, if Morgan manages to complete the Tower of Power.

Meh
Revisado: 01-15-25
Flat characters. Meandering plot. Uninteresting loser MC. Critical moments/reveals have no impact whatsoever. Low stakes. World building that tries to be funny and isn’t. Game system that’s so ordinary and poorly done. Overall, it’s meh.

Historia
Arthur lives with his father, a fallen but proud former noble, in Border Village #49, along with the other good folks condemned to toil in service to the Baron. But Arthur has an edge: a stolen heart card that secretly fell into his possession, thanks to a dragon. It’s a priceless source of power for the Baron and the tyrant will kill to get it back. Invaluable, too, to a young man of spellcasting ambitions.

Better than I thought it would be
Revisado: 01-08-25
I was surprised. I thought this was going to be mediocre, at best. It’s not mediocre at all. It’s a ton of fun. If you’re looking for a fun and engaging book that’s easy to listen to while you’re working, then this is the book for you.

Historia
The city of Celum is not much like Liscor at all. While Erin is surrounded by familiar, human faces, she’s far from home and without her inn. At the same time, a certain ill-tempered Lyonette is squatting in Erin’s inn, and Goblins are on the move. The Goblin Lord’s threat reaches across the entire region, and the Redfang tribe has rallied against him with the Floodplains tribe, although their Chieftains do not agree on some crucial matters. This winter, there is only snow, Goblins, magic, and iambic pentameter.

Stretched to his limit, Tamas is relying heavily on his few remaining powder mages, including the embittered Taniel, a brilliant marksman who also happens to be his estranged son, and Adamat, a retired police inspector whose loyalty is being tested by blackmail. But when gods are involved....Now, as attacks batter them from within and without, the credulous are whispering about omens of death and destruction. Just old peasant legends about the gods waking to walk the earth. No modern educated man believes that sort of thing. But they should....

Boring but ok
Revisado: 06-13-24
This book was just ok, and barely that. Close to being 2 stars for me. I was bored out of my mind and couldn’t care less about the characters. I’m usually easy to please, so I was surprised by this considering the attention this series gets on booktube. This book was a disappointment and I would love to give it 2 stars but I think it’s objectively worth 3, but it’s the lowest of all the 3 stars I’ve ever given. It’s hard to care about a story when you don’t care about the characters. I think this was a writing issue more than a me issue.

Stephen Fry brings the richness of these magical stories to life in the original British recordings, available for the first time in the United States and Canada. Treat your ears to a performance so rich and captivating you'll imagine yourself in the halls of Hogwarts. Wherever you listen, the unmistakable voice of Stephen Fry is guaranteed to guide you ever more deeply into this magical story and transport you to the heart of the adventure.

Love me some Arry Pottah
Revisado: 04-28-24
I mean, I love it. Enough said.
As for the narrator battle. I don’t think the Stephen Fry version is any better than the Jim Dale version. I’ve only listened to one with Fry so far, but it seems that fry does the reading better and Dale does voices better (there’s more to it but that’s my short take). I think if you enjoy Dales version there’s no need to get this. But if you’re like me and you want it all, then go for it. I like the idea of having multiple narrators to choose from since I listen to the Harry Potter series twice a year.
