Historia
Jada Pinkett Smith was living what many would view as a fairy-tale of Hollywood success. But appearances can be deceiving, and as she felt more and more separated from her sense of self, emotional turmoil took hold. Sparing no detail, Worthy chronicles her life.

Just “OK”
Revisado: 11-19-23
I wanted to listen to both Will and Jada’s stories because my husband and I have lived surprisingly parallel lives in different ways so the ability to hear (both Will and) Jada’s stories allowed me validation and fascination of subject matter we have also encountered from unique points of view.
I felt an unusual amount of time was spent giving advice, asking questions for others to do self reflection. I think her intent was innocent, but I found myself wondering if she is truly answering these questions for herself or simply wanting to be seen as a guru? “Pseudo-guru” was already written in my notes before she stated the term herself within the reading. I hate seeing celebrities do this. If I want advice on psychological or social Justice issues, I turn to academics and experts, not celebrities.
The story, at least the first 2/3, lacked the feeling of authenticity. Instead, it felt like she was acting throughout the read, attempting to give a particular view instead of authenticity.
For me, there was too much name dropping. From actors to brand names, to diamond sizes to other famous people, there seemed no purpose to all the name dropping other than a not-so-subliminal “look at me”. I cannot help but wonder what the reason for this was as it did not add to her story.
I am only three years older than she (and only a few months older than Will) but her story sounded like a struggle for maturity until very close to 50. I found myself in disbelief of different actions/feelings she described doing/feeling as an adult, which seemed to be operating from base instincts instead of a more evolved place. I have to give her kudos for sharing as she did, because it did not make her look good.
It did feel like it diminished Will’s role as father, and giving herself all the credit for raising their kids. True? Not true? We may never know.
It was interesting having already listened to Will’s book, the two distinctly different views on some of the same situations. Someone isn’t telling the story accurately. One wonders who.
I come away thinking a bit less of Jada and sadly disappointed. Hopefully it was just how things were worded and my impression is incorrect.

Historia
From a New York Times investigative reporter, this “authoritative and devastating account of the impacts of social media” (New York Times Book Review) tracks the high-stakes inside story of how Big Tech’s breakneck race to drive engagement—and profits—at all costs fractured the world, and is “an essential book for our times” (Ezra Klein).

Balanced, well written and fascinating.

A deep dive into the mechanistic workings behind social media, how the algorithms work, and who benefits from them. This book should be required reading in high schools.

Historia
In this revolutionary book, renowned physician Gabor Maté eloquently dissects how in Western countries that pride themselves on their healthcare systems, chronic illness and general ill health are on the rise. Nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug; more than half take two. In Canada, every fifth person has high blood pressure. In Europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. And everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. So what is really “normal” when it comes to health?

Great and mediocre at the same time
Revisado: 02-04-23
A very interesting book, but I felt it delved into personal opinion a bit too many times. Some chapters were very interesting, others were hard to listen to because the factual backing was not mentioned. Overall, an average read.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Funny the outrage honesty can bring
Revisado: 01-26-23
This book is causing such upheaval in the press, all because Harry was honest and shared his story as he lived it. After reading this, it is apparent to me that Harry did the work to find his authentic self, aside from what the royal family dictated he should be, and they are not happy that they cannot control him. Sad, mostly for those left within the confines of the royal family, but so happy for Harry and Meghan that they could break away and find a way to live a healthy life, outside of royalty. Interesting book.

Historia
Soon after his 50th birthday, Steven Petrow began assembling a list of "things I won't do when I get old" - mostly a catalog of all the things he thought his then 70-something-year-old parents were doing wrong. That list became the basis of this rousing collection of dos and don'ts, wills and won'ts that is equal parts hilarious, honest, and practical.

Food for thought
Revisado: 01-04-23
A lot of food for thought in here. The story repeats a couple things, but overall is quite good.

Historia
In 1873 the people of Labette County, Kansas made a grisly discovery. Buried by a trailside cabin beneath an orchard of young apple trees were the remains of countless bodies. Below the cabin itself was a cellar stained with blood. The Benders, the family of four who once resided on the property were nowhere to be found. The discovery sent the local community and national newspapers into a frenzy that continued for decades, sparking an epic manhunt for the Benders.

A lot local history, not a lot about the Benders
Revisado: 12-31-22
I was hoping this story would focus more on the Benders- possibly dive in their history before their crimes and more about what happened to them, but whether by lack of research or lack of its existence, it just isn’t there. A bit disappointing.

Historia
When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs.

Historia
For Ingrid Rojas Contreras, magic runs in the family. Raised amid the political violence of 1980s and '90s Colombia, in a house bustling with her mother’s fortune-telling clients, she was a hard child to surprise. Her maternal grandfather, Nono, was a renowned curandero, a community healer gifted with what the family called “the secrets”: the power to talk to the dead, tell the future, treat the sick, and move the clouds.

Historia
The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

Great book. I have read many books on this subject and the multiple stories within this make for a great dive into many aspects, sometimes repeating information from the individual authors books. I listened to the book, and all narrators are not equal. There are a few repeats.

Historia
I order another bourbon, neat. This is the drink that will flip the switch. I don’t even know how I got here, to this place, to this point. Something is happening to me lately. I’m drinking too much. My sheets are soaking wet when I wake up from nightmares of decaying corpses. I order another drink and swig it, trying to forget about the latest case I can’t shake. Crime solving for me is more complex than the challenge of the hunt, or the process of piecing together a scientific puzzle. The thought of good people suffering drives me to the point of obsession.

Good audio book, but I don’t think the author should have read it. His voice was monotone and was enough to distract me from the story.
