Historia
At the winter solstice, South Mardian's swordsmen weave their blades in an ancient ritual dance. But for one of them, the excitement proves too heady, and his decapitation turns the fertility rite into a pageant of death. Now Inspector Roderick Alleyn must penetrate not only the mysteries of folklore but also the secrets and sins of an eccentric group, including a surly blacksmith, a domineering dowager, and a not-so-simple village idiot.

Nice Story
Revisado: 10-19-20
The more I listened, the more I liked it. Nice plot and read well. It was fun hearing about a part of the world that is a mystery to me in itself. I am glad I can hear about the cold without actually having to be there.

Historia
While 1858 in London may have been noteworthy for its broiling summer months and the related stench of the sewage-filled Thames River, the year is otherwise little remembered. And yet, historian Rosemary Ashton reveals in this compelling microhistory, 1858 was marked by significant, if unrecognized, turning points. For ordinary people, and also for the rich, famous, and powerful, the months from May to August turned out to be a summer of consequence.

Make sure you can listen in large chunks. It is easy to loose track of what is going on if you are interrupted.

Peregrine Jay, owner of the Dolphin Theatre, is putting on a magnificent production of Macbeth, the play that, superstition says, always brings bad luck. Read Macbeth First
Revisado: 02-10-18
I really enjoyed this book. I wish I had read (or listened) to Macbeth prior to listening to this book. It is not necessary to have done so to understand the plot of this book but it would have made listening more enjoyable. I don’t know a thing about theater jargon but the author’s assumption I did actually made it more enjoyable. I occasionally looked up a term but enjoyed the insider’s view of a theatrical production.

Historia
The Earl of Wrexford possesses a brilliant scientific mind, but boredom and pride lead him to reckless behavior. He does not suffer fools gladly. So when pompous, pious Reverend Josiah Holworthy publicly condemns him for debauchery, Wrexford unsheathes his rapier-sharp wit and strikes back. As their war of words escalates, London's most popular satirical cartoonist, A. J. Quill, skewers them both.

A well written and well read book.
Revisado: 01-23-18
This story was well written and enjoyable. A few times it verges on coincidence and raw chance as the resolution to some plot problem, which would have ruined it. But ultimately it kept them to a suitable minimum. I am looking to the sequel.

While it is not his best book, it clearly is the most representative of the author. A little romance, a little suspense, and a pot load of verbal slapstick.

Historia
Murder, blackmail and drug dealing on the Tiber combine in one of Ngaio Marsh’s liveliest and most evocative novels. When their guide disappears mysteriously in the depths of a Roman basilica, the members of Mr. Sebastian Mailer’s tour group seem strangely unperturbed. But when a body is discovered in an Etruscan sarcophagus, Superintendent Alleyn, in Rome incognito on the trail of an international drug racket, is very much concerned.

Historia
A touring theatre company in New Zealand forms the basis of one of Marsh’s most ambitious and innovative novels. New Zealand theatrical manager Alfred Meyer wanted to celebrate his wife’s birthday in style. The piece de résistance would be the jeroboam of champagne which would descend gently into a nest of fern and coloured lights on the table, set up on stage after the performance. But something went horribly wrong. Chief Detective Inspector Alleyn witnessed it himself.
