Great story
Revisado: 05-03-25
Hard to categorize this short book, but it is a great read. The use of AI to read rather than a person is creepy and was not great.

Historia
On a cold winter day in 1832, Sarah Maria Cornell was found dead in a quiet farmyard in a small New England town. When her troubled past and a secret correspondence with charismatic Methodist minister Reverend Ephraim Avery was uncovered, more questions emerged. Was Sarah’s death a suicide...or something much darker? Determined to uncover the real story, Victorian writer Catharine Read Arnold Williams threw herself into the investigation as the trial was unfolding and wrote what many claim to be the first American true-crime narrative, Fall River.

Another Great Book by This Author
Revisado: 04-14-25
Not only is the death of a young woman in the early 1830s part of the mystery, but so is the intent of the first person to delve into the case, and our author examines it all. As usual, her research is incredible and her perspective on how to write true crime is perfect. The writing and the performance—both by the author—are excellent.

Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.

Fascinating history
Revisado: 10-09-24
Well-researched and read extremely well. This book looks at specific witch trials and why/how they occurred. We get to know much more about the witches and the witch hunters than most books provide. The book ends with the present day, which was a surprise to me, but presented well. A fine history.

Historia
July 1912. Lady Hardcastle and her tenacious lady’s maid, Florence Armstrong, are enjoying a convivial gathering at the home of their dear friends, the Farley-Strouds. The only fly in the idyllic ointment seems to be the lack of musical entertainment for the forthcoming summer party—until, that is, Lady Hardcastle’s brother Harry calls with news of a murder.

Historia
Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job.

Loved this book! An unreliable narrator, secondary characters whose good/evil is always in question. Twists and turns. And so much about the good in people, our differences, and family secrets. An amazing book!

Historia
May 1912. After the previous year’s deadly heatwave, it’s been an uneventful spring in Littleton Cotterell. Though for Lady Hardcastle and her fiercely loyal lady’s maid Flo, at least there are the provincial delights of the village’s inaugural art exhibition—and bicycle race—to look forward to. But at the exhibition opening, there’s a panicked shout of ‘Fire!’ In the confusion, the main attraction—an extremely expensive book—is stolen from under everyone’s nose, as is a valuable painting lent by Sir Hector Farley-Stroud.

I Adore This Series
Revisado: 07-04-24
These Lady Hardcastle/Flo Armstrong books keep getting better! And Elizabeth Knowelden, the woman who reads the books for Audible, perfectly captures Flo (all of these books are told from her POV) and all of the voices and nuances. The mix of humor and mystery is so well-done in this book, and it was wonderful to have two different women--one from Flo's past and one from Lady Hardcastle's past--show up. Daisy, Sunderland, and the rest are all here, as well as other new characters, including bike racers and treasure hunters.
Anyone looking for cozy mysteries that meld the mystery with interesting characters and lots of humor will love these books! (And, again, the performance is perfect!)

Historia
This collection of short, action-filled stories of the Old West's most egregiously badly behaved female outlaws, gamblers, soiled doves, and other wicked women offers a glimpse into the Western women's experience that's less sunbonnets and more six-shooters. During the late 1800s, while men were settling the new frontier and rushing off to the latest boomtowns, women of easy virtue found wicked lives west of the Mississippi when they followed fortune hunters seeking gold and land in an unsettled territory.

I so enjoyed this book, which contains the biographies (short but thorough) of some of the fascinating women of America's Wild West. Belle Starr and Calamity Jane are in here, but the other women whose lives are recounted are lesser-known but just as interesting. The performance was excellent as well. I highly recommend!

Historia
In the 1940s and '50s, when the newly minted Jet Propulsion Laboratory needed quick-thinking mathematicians to calculate velocities and plot trajectories, they didn't turn to male graduates. Rather, they recruited an elite group of young women who, with only pencil, paper, and mathematical prowess, transformed rocket design, helped bring about the first American satellites, and made the exploration of the solar system possible.

I have spent much of my life reading women--women authors, their memoirs, women's history, etc. I will never get to read everything I would like to . . .
Happy I got to read this book. As with others I have listened to (Code Girls, Hidden Figures, The Secret Life of Home Economics, etc.) I loved being introduced to these women. I also loved learning about scientific concepts, explained very well by the author in a way I could understand.
The performance was very well-done.
I highly recommend this book! I plan on recommending it to friends.
