Historia
When the External Womb Programme is launched, the news is controversial. Hundreds take to the streets in protest, feeling strongly that growing a baby outside of the human body is "unnatural". But thousands more people rejoice: at last, an alternative for those who wish to have children but worry about the physical toll it may take. A chance that throwing a baby-shaped grenade into one's career path might not derail it entirely.

It was mildly entertaining

I kept waiting for things to happen. I liked the characters and I liked the two perspectives. It took a long time to connect the stories. I think a lot more could’ve been done with the story. More background development maybe?

Historia
While running in Central Park, New York Times science writer Damon Ellis crashes—literally—into a story that just might resurrect his career…and change the course of human history. On the face of it, it seems absurd—a small biotech company in Boston called Calypso that claims to have cracked the secret of eternal youth. Surely a hoax. Or is it?

Engaging but…

There were too many loose ends. Unsatisfying ending. Too much left unexplained. I kind of hate when fictional storytellers do that. So much more could have been explained by the end.

Historia
As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

Historia
As a doctor, I walk a dangerously delicate balance of being compassionate but not overly invested. The same is true in my personal life - love is a luxury I can’t afford. It isn’t until Dr. Westin Grant breaks down all my walls and offers me a future, I find myself wondering if I’m brave enough to risk my heart. When who I was and who I’ve tried to become collide during my clinical trial, the fate of one patient changes everything.

Meh
Revisado: 03-07-22
Things I liked: She was a doctor who saved lives. Things I didn’t: She was ridiculously emotional, in a way that you wouldn’t want your oncologist to be. She made really dumb decisions based on manic emotions. Half the time I wanted to slap her. Also, I found the end to be very unsatisfying. I am not really a romance reader, so maybe I don’t really get it. But I like my female protagonist to be real people.

I liked it until the end...
Revisado: 01-27-22
The twist at the end was a little too far-fetched. I do enjoy a good red herring as much as the next mystery lover, but where I usually enjoy the feeling of "Ohhhhh! Now everything makes SO much sense!", this ending gave me the sense of "Wait, what? No forking way!" Too bad. It was engaging and promising until then.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Pretty depressing...
Revisado: 12-02-21
I think it's just me. I felt vaguely irritated with the main character to the point where I never developed any sympathy for him. His choices, his reactions to things....nothing, even in light of what happens to him in the beginning. I remember liking Tartt's "The Secret History" but this one was a downer from start to finish. It was well written and well performed, just not my cup of tea.

The story was entertaining, but...
Revisado: 02-13-21
The Irish narrator was great at the main character. He was Irish and the narrator is obviously Irish. The problem was when he was supposed to do an American accent, and he sounded Irish. Also, when he was supposed to do a British accent, and he sounded Irish. It could be considered to be a small complaint, especially if the story is well told. But it bugged me.

So-so start (but it got worse...)
Revisado: 02-15-20
Maybe it’s because I found the protagonist to be, at first slow and then annoying. Maybe it’s bc there is so damsel in distress/inexplicable male posturing. Maybe it’s because the relationships and people are unbelievable. Take your pick. I grew to dislike this book. Disappointed.

Enjoyable series, but....
Revisado: 09-23-19
I am enjoying the series. It is entertaining. The narrator is great and very good at quickly moving back and forth between English and Scottish accents as needed. But there was something weird going on with the recording - it sounded as though parts of the story were recorded over, badly and in a different environment. It was distracting and took away from my enjoyment when it happened.
