it's just a romance novel
Revisado: 04-03-25
the only difference between this book and a romance novel are the references to God. Everything else is formulaic. if you like reading about relationship fairy tales, you will love it. This type of book leads people to believe that they are somehow missing out in their own relationships.

Historia
One of the sharpest attorneys in Charleston, SC, Sally Baynard isn't your typical Southern belle. She's certainly not what her mother hoped she'd grow up to be, especially since she divorced her husband, family court judge Joe Baynard, and his historic family with their historic wealth and historic houses. Maybe Sally was never going to be a proper society lady, but her success as a public defender and family lawyer have been enough for her.

Excellent performance and a great story. I fully enjoyed this book and recommend this listen if you enjoy a indecisive back and forth with a surprise at the end.

Revisado: 12-15-24
This author and reader combo is great. I love the writing style, the conversation style and all the twists and turns. I love that I am challenged it trying to predict where the story might turn and I even love it when those predictions are thwarted. Always a great "read" and a great listen.

This is an interesting and really well done podcast. The stories are not the same old stories and the performance is just great. I highly recommend this series and any other podcast involving this team!

Raised in Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned all he knows from his father, Dr. Tom Cage. But now Tom has been accused of murdering the Black nurse with whom he worked in the 1960s and Penn is determined to exonerate him. The quest for answers leads down a trail of corruption and brutality that places Penn’s family squarely in the crosshairs of the Double Eagles, a vicious offshoot of the KKK controlled by some of the state’s most powerful men. Suspension of Disbelief
Revisado: 10-08-24
I know it's fictional but there should at least be an attempt to make it seem plausible. Also, everything dealing with the legal aspects of the books are laughable at best and after hours and hours of the ridiculousness, I have to say it was a waste of time and brain cells.

Wow, just wow (and not in a good way)
Revisado: 07-30-24
It seems like this book is a porno in written form with the thinnest of plots. The main character is a criminal that cares only about themselves. It's pretty rare that I despise the main character enough to hope they get what they deserve, or at least what they would deserve if this were a true story. I actually couldn't finish it, that's how bad the story line is in this book. I am sure some would like it but I am pretty sure they wouldn't bother to read it as they would want it in a picture format.
The performance was the only part that didn't suck.

Historia
12/14/2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School Newtown, Connecticut We remember the numbers: 20 children and 6 adults, murdered in a place of nurture and trust. We remember the names: Teachers like Victoria Soto, who lost her life protecting her students. A shooter named Adam Lanza. And we remember the questions: Outraged conjecture instantly monopolized the worldwide response to the tragedy, while the truth went missing. Here is the definitive journalistic account of Newtown.

Heart wrenching
Revisado: 07-30-24
The author told the story of all the people involved in the tragedy on 12-14-12, including the family of the shooter. There was much that I didn't know about that awful day, even though the shooting was in all the news, even on the west coast. The description of the children and teachers involved was respectful and well done. I cried a number of times about the lives and innocence that was lost that day.
The reading was good as well.

Historia
Deborah Larkin was only ten years old when the quiet calm of her California suburb was shattered. Thirty miles north, on a quiet November night in Santa Barbara, a pregnant nurse named Olga Duncan disappeared from her apartment. The mystery deepens when it is discovered that Olga’s mother-in-law—a deeply manipulative and deceptive woman—had been doing everything in her power to separate Olga and her son, Frank, prior to Olga’s disappearance.

Very Interesting Story
Revisado: 06-26-24
This is an unusual format about a true crime story that covers the details from a different point of view. I especially enjoyed the way that the story covered a horrific crime that was previously unknown to me but didn't leave everything heavy and sad. Of course the murder of a young woman is terrible and sad but there was a lot of other parts that made the story bearable. It also brings up whether the death penalty is really worthwhile since at no time has it shown to deter crime. I have long struggled with the death penalty because even one death of an innocent person is too much but this made me think about it further.

Stunning and disturbing
Revisado: 03-03-24
This is a shocking true account of "acceptable" behavior in the Amish community and if it can happen there, it certainly happens everywhere. This is not a one-off story and I fear it happens commonly, especially in communities where women are subservient. This book is disturbing in that it details how children suffer in silence and how something has to be done to protect the innocence of these girls. It is frustrating that this all goes on and the rapists are protected by the church, somehow blaming God for the actions of pedophiles.
While I am not typically a fan of virtual voice, it was tolerable for the most part. I am sure some of the words were mispronounced but the story is so compelling that it is not a reason to skip this read.
