How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

This book has clearly pulled the wool over many eyes
Revisado: 04-09-25
The author drags out popular salacious stories of injustice, packs this book with them knowing they’ll tug on our heart strings but this doesn’t add depth to his default to truth theory.
I find his use of Sandra Bland’s story particularly distasteful. It’s like additional victimization of this woman to use her trauma as an attention grab for the start of the book. It’s disturbing and profoundly hurtful.
This book is more of a podcast with the music and guest speakers. If you enjoy podcasts especially podcasts that use traumatic events as entertainment sources then you might really enjoy this book.

They have lived for centuries in a house of legend and mystery in upper Illinois—and they are not like other Midwesterners. Rarely encountered in daylight hours, their children are curious and wild; their old ones have survived since before the Sphinx first sank its paws deep in Egyptian sands. And some sleep in beds with lids. Now the house is being readied in anticipation of the gala homecoming that will gather together the far-flung branches of this odd and remarkable family.

Beautifully dark stories within a story. The atmosphere and world he created were so well defined I felt the chill.

Welcome to the Black Triangle, New York's decadent district of opium dens, gambling casinos, drunken sailors, gaudy hookers, and back room abortions. The queen of this unsavory neighborhood is Black Lena Shanks, whose family leads a ring of female criminals-women skilled in the art of cruelty. Only a few blocks away, amidst the elegant mansions and lily-white reputations of Gramercy Park and Washington Square, lives Judge James Stallworth.

Stellar

Another excellent novel by one of my favorite authors. Initially I was blasé about the story line but it came together. The descriptions of poverty and despair were brutal. The polarities in the story were both stark and nuanced.

Better Than I Expected
Revisado: 08-23-24
Usually cozy reads have a whiny narrator that drags words, this book's narrator doesn't do that and lord how I appreciate it. The plot was interesting, characters likeable. I thought the setting was particularly fun. I recommend this book because it's a light, easy read that's holds one's attention.

In his authorial debut Aaron R. Tyler produced this edge of your seat crime thriller that you can't put down. This book is haunting me!
Revisado: 08-22-24
Oh my goodness Mr. Tyler what have you done. I so thoroughly enjoyed the audio book that I went and purchased a hard copy because I wanted to savor it a bit more by slowing my pace. Your characters had me hooked. They're familiar, love them and/or hate them, we know these types. Let's talk about the ending... no spoilers but I'll just say that I was restless for a several nights after I finished the book. I was so unsettled, no! no! no! ... yes! yes! yes! ... no! yes! How could she! How could he! How could the author! I think that's a sign of a good read.
I've moved on to other books by this author and I'm not disappointed. This author knows how to build a climax.

After a bizarre and disturbing incident at the funeral of matriarch Marian Savage, the McCray and Savage families look forward to a restful and relaxing summer at Beldame, on Alabama's Gulf Coast, where three Victorian houses loom over the shimmering beach. Two of the houses are habitable, while the third is slowly and mysteriously being buried beneath an enormous dune of blindingly white sand. But though long uninhabited, the third house is not empty. Inside, something deadly lies in wait.

Couldn’t get past the terrible faux southern accent. It’s so bad. Story was good but couldn’t get past the whine that was used in place of a southern drawl.
