Historia
From its inception, hip-hop has challenged ideas about morality, religion, and truth. Genuinely, it’s a philosophical genre. Both philosophers and hip-hop artists think about God, death, and justice, among other things. But rarely do members of these two groups talk to one another about these issues. This is a shame, given that both hip-hop and philosophy have a rich history in deep thinking and have produced exemplary thinkers.

Historia
The Big Three in Economics reveals the battle of ideas among the three most influential economists in world history: Adam Smith, representing laissez faire; Karl Marx, reflecting the radical socialist model; and John Maynard Keynes, symbolizing big government and the welfare state. History comes alive in this fascinating story of opposing views that continue to play a fundamental role in today's politics and economics.

Detailed but overall cynical
Revisado: 10-06-24
Understanging the daunting task, the book seems to be a poor travel memior by a man who is more interested in sharing everything he knowns while making sure you can know nothing for sure. While there is a lot of details, he presents nothing terribly new. Here is what we already knew, it's challenging to be dogmatic about who the apostles were and where there final resting places are on the earth. But given the title of the book "Travels Among the Tombs of the Twelve" I would have assumed a more straight forward analysis on the resting place of each Apostle with a reasonably supported point of view from the author saying this is the most probable spot among the understood choices. Instead he seems to say none of the traditional spots are true, offering no clear alternative. And he does that providing so much information and detail that it's frustrating that he leaves you with the clear view that not only the burial place but the apostles themselves are unknowable unless you want to be a fool and believe that the harmonized Gospel writings are true. We knew that already.
In addition for all his efforts to be well researched and precise (which the book is well researched) he conflates the twelve disciples with apostles. Paul's inclusion who indeed was an Apostle but not one of 'the twelve' and the exclusion of Matthias who was made one of the twelve is an example.
His personal travel narrative also adds little in my opinion save a few interactions, most notable in his section on Peter. Most others far less useful or entertaining for a work that is positioned and researched as scholarly. For example we don't need to know that the author got drunk before some of his church visits or how big and white a priest forehead zit was.
While I can appreciate a Socrates like approach 'question everything, know nothing.' And understand both his subject matter and his objective is different, the author might benefit from reading the Socrates Express to learn how to write a more engaging 'travel' memior or the Last Campaign if he wants to better write a well researched and balanced work which effectively allows you to draw your own point of view. Nevertheless, if his intent was to provide you with all the well researched information on the twelve so that you can be cynical about who they were and where their final resting place are, then the book is a completely successful.

Historia
Raised in South Carolina and New York, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement. Touching and powerful, each poem is both accessible and emotionally charged, each line a glimpse into a child's soul as she searches for her place in the world.
