Historia
In 1345, China lies under harsh Mongol rule. For the starving peasants of the Central Plains, greatness is something found only in stories. When the Zhu family’s eighth-born son, Zhu Chongba, is given a fate of greatness, everyone is mystified as to how it will come to pass. The fate of nothingness received by the family’s clever and capable second daughter, on the other hand, is only as expected.

as much as I had looked forward to listening to this book, which I have read, I had to shut it off
Revisado: 11-30-24
The narrator was the worst I have ever heard, and I have 400+ audio books. Nasal, screechy, insistently fingernail on a chalk board.

This deeply textured dual biography and fascinating intellectual history examines two of the greatest minds of European history - Desiderius Erasmus and Martin Luther - whose heated rivalry gave rise to two enduring, fundamental, and often colliding traditions of philosophical and religious thought.

I was fascinated but cringed sometimes as Narrator mispronounced impious, sure, hallowed, route, err, and many others. Latin “c” mispronounced as “s” instead of ‘k’. The fellow is obviously American.

Historia
A deeply divided nation. Vicious politics. A shamelessly partisan media. A president loathed by half the populace. Smuggling and gang warfare along the Mexican border. Armed citizens willing to stand their ground and take law into their own hands.... That was America in 1881. All those forces came to bear on the afternoon of October 26, when Doc Holliday and the Earp brothers faced off against the Clantons and the McLaurys in Tombstone, Arizona. It should have been a simple misdemeanor arrest.

Historia
The year is 1878, peak of the Texas cattle trade. The place is Dodge City, Kansas, a saloon-filled cow town jammed with liquored-up adolescent cowboys and young Irish hookers. Violence is random and routine, but when the burned body of a mixed-blood boy named Johnnie Sanders is discovered, his death shocks a part-time policeman named Wyatt Earp. And it is a matter of strangely personal importance to Doc Holliday, the frail 26-year-old dentist who has just opened an office at No. 24, Dodge House.

Literature at its finest, bringing to vivid life harsh reality. Superb descriptive language; sensitive where needed, damning as required. Balanced tale of love, hate, hardship. There are no victories, except the small stubborn ones accruing daily by survival in harsh surroundings. Portrayal of the quotidian struggles of women stands out above the suffocating life of Dodge City.

Horrible virtual voice narration
Revisado: 07-26-24
The story leads to more sorrow with each chapter. The virtual voice narration mispronounces words, fails in appropriate emphasis and is generally unpleasant. The timbre is ok, but the other errors outweigh that.

Historia
58 AD, Rome. Agricola, teenage son of an impoverished yet distinguished noble family, has staked all his resources and reputation on a military career. His reward? A posting as tribune in the far-off northern province of Britannia. Serving under renowned general Suetonius Paulinus, Agricola soon learns the brutality of life on the very edges of the empire, for the Celtic tribes of Britannia are far from vanquished. To take control of the province, the Romans must defeat the ancient might of the druids.

The story is good as I like historically based books. The characters are well fleshed out, except for the rival tribune. What I did not like is the narrator. Nasal intonation for some characters and heaven forfend he ever does women again.

Revisado: 01-14-24
Sid Halley by Dick Francis dies not whine, dither, wonder what he should do or spend time in long tedious explanations of history of Midland castle or how mechanical arms work. Dick Francis also shades his characters with solid or delicate personalities, so we readers appreciate them and why they behave as they do. Felix has a truly wooden and unknown woman as the magnet for threr hero. Poor man.

Historia
"Sadly, death at the races is not uncommon. However, three in a single afternoon was sufficiently unusual to raise more than one eyebrow." It's the third death on Cheltenham Gold Cup Day that really troubles super-sleuth Sid Halley. Last seen in 1995's Come to Grief, former champion jockey Halley knows the perils of racing all too well but, in his day, jockeys didn't usually reach the finishing line with three .38 rounds in the chest.

Historia
The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River.
