Annoying "Reader"

The story was mediocre at best. What quality there was was poorly served by someone's choice of AI narration. There were mispronunciations, oddly placed emphases, and a soporific voice level. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who doesn't want it to read them to sleep.

Butling Has Never Been so Cool

It begins with a complex character, adds Otherness, and comes to a very satisfying conclusion. I definitely want more of this story, and I want it read by the same narrator.
There's no dystopian gloom, no flawed, irredeemable protagonist, and certainly no depressing result.
Go, read it, and smile.

Grim, grimmer, grimmest

As not a fan of disaster upon catastrophe upon reversal of fortune. I did struggle to finish. Novik has a talent I can only admire, and she shows it here, but it kept on and on and on...
Julia's accent was entirely appropriate for characters living in fantasy-Poland next door to fantasy-Russia. Her delivery and phrasing defused tension and erased character differentiation. Overall, 'Uprooted' was good enough, but not to the level of 'Temeraire.'

Not to a Victorian Lady's Taste

Excellent as these stories are, they did not suit my taste. This is a very subjective opinion, of course, and should not deter any one younger than I from trying and enjoying them. My opinion has nothing to do with re-imagining Holmes as American, female, juvenile, or black, or any combination thereof. It is just like taste in foods, clothing styles, movie genres, or sports teams: "de gustibus non disputandem est."

NOT Your Standard Timeslip

I chose it because I liked the premise: B-17F timeslips and becomes awesome advanced technology.
But she doesn't.
She saves the world in two timelines.
Boyett I knew from Ariel, which I still reread, and this is better. It starts as a good WWII bomber story, with real men, barely out of boyhood, flying into Germany to end Hitler's war machine. Then sci-fi happens, and the real story begins.
There are tears blurring the keyboard as I type. I know I shall read this again. Fata Morgana is not a mirage.
She is real.

Excellent Author, Disappointing Novel

This book is written in the first person present tense verbs. I dislike this format intensely. That is the only reason why I gave it such a low rating. The premise is promising, the author is tried and true, but the formatting killed it for me. If books written this way do not bother you, then you may well enjoy this. Sadly, I could not.

The synopsis was intriguing, but I couldn't tolerate the reader. I had to quit. Unless you like a pinched, nasally voice with an accent that sounds affected, don't bother with this book.

Shortchanged

As one other reviewer noted, this is an abridgement, a fact that wasn't made plain to a purchaser who bought exactly because she likes Bill Bryson. This is the reason that I am returning it. On the other hand, if you have not read Bryson before, this would make a perfect introduction to his whimsical style of presenting potentially dry facts. Therein lies the "It's okay" rating.
