Historia
The legacy of General Nathan Bedford Forrest is deeply divisive. Best known for being accused of war crimes at the Battle of Fort Pillow and for his role as first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan - an organization he later denounced - Forrest has often been studied as a military figure, but never before studied as a fascinating individual who wrestled with the complex issues of his violent times. Bust Hell Wide Open is a comprehensive portrait of Nathan Bedford Forrest as a man: his achievements, failings, reflections, and regrets.

Biased
Revisado: 07-15-21
Spends an uncomfortable amount of effort trying to express how Forrest was not racist, was not responsible for the Fort Pillow Massacre, and how Forrest was grand wizard of the kkk but that it wasn't the "bad" kkk.

Historia
An epic history of a doomed civilization and a lost empire. The devastating struggle to the death between the Carthaginians and the Romans was one of the defining dramas of the ancient world. In an epic series of land and sea battles, both sides came close to victory before the Carthaginians finally succumbed and their capital city, history, and culture were almost utterly erased.

Very enjoyable and unique

I've gone through the story of the punic wars over and over again but this is the first I've heard the story from the carthaginian pov. Beyond that, the book gets into history you probably haven't heard about the carthaginians such as their Sicilian campaigns.

Historia
This kaleidoscopic book covers almost 3,000 years of Arab history and shines a light on the footloose Arab peoples and tribes who conquered lands and disseminated their language and culture over vast distances. Tracing this process to the origins of the Arabic language, rather than the advent of Islam, Tim Mackintosh-Smith begins his narrative more than a thousand years before Muhammad and focuses on how Arabic, both spoken and written, has functioned as a vital source of shared cultural identity over the millennia.

Very readable and in-depth
Revisado: 08-02-19
I'm no historian but I love reading history. If you've ever tried to learn about Arab history from an American's standpoint, you'll find that most books are superficial and hardly informative. This book was very readable, I'll probably read again within the year. Rather than regurgitate information we've all heard before, he leads you to many revelations on the subject. The author is clever and wise, I'm open to all of his thoughts and opinions throughout the book.
