Great mystery
Revisado: 09-26-24
The story was interesting and well written with each chapter starting with how many days of no rain, precipitation zero. Near the end, the rain and the action picks up. I liked the narrators voice. Not much cursing, which I also appreciated.

Historia
UrbanMyth: It was lauded as an alternative to the performative, show-your-best-self platforms—an anonymous discussion board grouped by zip code. The residents of Manhattan’s exclusive Upper East Side disclosed it all, things they would never share with their friends or their spouses: secret bank accounts, steamy affairs, tidbits of juicy gossip. So when a “hacktivist” group breaks into the forum and exposes the real identity of each poster, the repercussions echo down Park Avenue with a force that none could have anticipated.

Enjoyed

I love the narrator. The story was also good. It wasn’t “thrilling”, but was interesting and kept me listening. I think it was more of a family drama.

This is the first book in months that I absolutely could not stop listening to. I loved it. The main character blamed herself for every little thing, would be my only complaint. Addictive!

So bad
Revisado: 03-05-24
The story was not researched. The attorney wife does things no attorney could do. The language was horrific. The husband did crazy, over the top stupid decisions. The narrators were the only redeeming part of the book. Too bad the words they had to say were such garbage. My main complaint with the book was the so called “twist”. You can’t have a character “think” in first person one way throughout the book, and then have her think something completely different as a plot twist. It doesn’t make sense. It’s cheating. The five star reviews had to be from teenagers with no clue what a good book looks like.

I liked the book. The “Mission Impossible “ type assignments, the way everything tied together, the twists, the betrayals, the lies upon lies… all made for an enjoyable read. It was never boring.

Historia
Running from a devastating relationship that almost cost her everything, Maddy Hart impulsively accepts a job as a live-in caretaker at imposing Lakeview House. She has no memories of having visited the crumbling mansion on the banks of Lake Thirlmere before, but when she arrives, something about the house feels familiar. The more time Maddy spends in the house, the more unsettled she feels. By day, she clears out the dusty rooms, but in the dead of night, it’s hard to explain away the eerie noises or crackly radio she hears hours after she turned it off.

Cheating
Revisado: 12-08-23
The book was not terrible, and the narration was ok. My problem with the book is a pet peeve of mine.
Spoiler ahead: you can’t have a character think a certain way and then be someone completely different at the end for a twist. That’s cheating. The only time this might work is with a character such as Norman Bates with multiple personalities. People may TELL other people lies to make them think a certain way, but a person doesn’t “think” something different than what is reality. For example, the main male character, Chase?, wonders several times if the boy, Alfie?, is trying to scare Maddy, and worries if it’s safe for her to stay at the mansion. Why would he wonder if it’s the boy, when it is him??? Why is he worried about her if he’s the serial killer psychopath? He may TELL the main character he’s worried, because he is lying and trying to cast blame elsewhere, but he’s not going to think “I wonder if it’s the boy?” That is cheating and doesn’t make sense. Also, a woman who is kicked in the head and punched in the face isn’t going to feel up to doing anything for a few weeks, much less falling in love with another man. She will be in severe pain with a lot of swelling. She won’t even be able to open her eyes for days… I’m a nurse, I know from seeing people who fall. There are several things that don’t line up. Plus… what about the character’s dreams and the music playing and the psychic? It led you to believe there was some paranormal things going on… red herrings? Why does no one else notice the bodies in the lake if they are clearly visible when the boy looks? Why are the bodies In perfect condition? Maybe if they were frozen in ice… cold water would slow down decomposition, but stop it all together?

Historia
There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, his and hers. Which means someone is always lying. When a woman is murdered in Blackdown, a quintessentially British village, newsreader Anna Andrews is reluctant to cover the case. Detective Jack Harper is suspicious of her involvement, until he becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation. Someone isn’t telling the truth, and some secrets are worth killing to keep.

This author is definitely the queen of twists! Loved it! I thought I knew who the killer was, but this thing twisted so many times my head was blown. People who say they saw the plot twist obviously didn’t listen to the end.

Wow
Revisado: 11-01-23
My husband and I both thought this book was great. The narration was fantastic, as well. It was spooky and twisty. I loved the atmosphere of the book, in a creepy insane asylum around World War 2. It covers the simultaneous search for the serial killer “Leather Apron” and a psych Drs interview for the “devil aspect” of 6 notorious killers. The epilogue of the epilogue was an awesome ending to this book!

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

Don’t get it
Revisado: 10-30-23
Maybe mild spoilers in this review… I thought this story was supposed to be scary. I didn’t understand the plot. A killer deer? If native Americans are hunted down and killed for killing a deer, I’m pretty sure there wouldn’t be any Native Americans… or any Americans for that matter. I believe all of our forefathers were hunters at one point…just to stay alive. We don’t all hunt today, of course, but I just don’t get it. Is it a story against game hunting, or wasteful hunting of meat? Is it just deer meat? Why are only Native Americans targeted? The weird basketball tournament at the end was bizarre. I returned this one.
