A New York Times Best Seller

From USA Today best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a “masterpiece” (Locus Magazine) of a novel about revenge, cultural identity, and the cost of breaking from tradition. Labeled “one of 2020’s buzziest horror novels” (Entertainment Weekly), this is a remarkable horror story that “will give you nightmares - the good kind of course” (BuzzFeed).

From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a violent, vengeful way.

A horror revenge saga rooted in Blackfeet culture
Recommending a horror novel in a collectively dark time is a bit of a dog whistle. While many are turning to more lighthearted fare, there are those of us who will always lean into the thrill of being scared—even more so when times are tough. But though accomplished horror author Stephen Graham Jones’s hotly anticipated new novel will definitely give you the shivers, its appeal goes beyond genre fiction. Beautifully written, funny, and packed with sharp societal insight, the story follows four Blackfeet Indian men being tracked by a supernatural entity hell-bent on revenge after an elk hunt 10 years prior. Rooted in cultural identity and told from four compelling POVs (all voiced by Native performer Shaun Taylor-Corbett), this atmospheric horror packs a bloody yet literary punch. —Kat J., Audible Editor

Really liked how it started off but towards the middle it just loses it and doesn't really make much sense. Felt like it went on too long.

Starts off good and then loses it.

This story spans ten years but also all of the history of our characters and their families, it's horrific, poetic, wrenching, shocking and beautiful. The narrator is sheer perfection and the tale is mesmerizing. I'm disappointed that this is the first I've heard of the author and am excited to read more of his work. This isn't a helpful review but I think you'll appreciate knowing less of the story going in so that you can experience the surprises. Give yourself a present and get this book.

A Masterpiece

It is going to take me a while to navigate my feelings in the wake of such a superb story read by the absolute perfect reader. It moved the boundaries of horror while embracing beloved tropes (final girls, avenging spirit, etc...) I cried and hugged my child, but I am not broken. But I am changed by it. This was new, and it will stay with me, always.

Extraordinary

I finished it, strictly because I was holding out hope for the ending, but a pick-up game of basketball s between a teenaged girl and and the Elk Head Woman was not what I was expecting. I feel like this novel could’ve been so much mor. The good parts were great, but the bad parts were horrible.

I adore how Stephen Graham Jones writes horror. I wish I had half stars. I would rate this book a 4.5. For context in my review I am Alaskan Native. I noticed on the reviews on google that a lot of white woman didn't find this book scary and I think for good reason. Graham Jones writes books for indigenous readers and this book truly terrified me at points. Worth a read of a listen but might not be for everyone.

I often feel like there's a bit of a tradeoff with audio books -- the format is more convenient for me but a lot of prose translates awkwardly to the spoken word and I usually think the narration is just OK. Not this one. I would highly recommend that anyone interested in this book buy the audio version. Graham-Jones' writing is conversational, fast-paced, and funny, and Shaun Taylor-Corbett delivers it perfectly.

Overall the plot is as good as any horror novel I've read, which is to say it has a few holes but provides some truly memorable, gory, spooky imagery. It's also got a unique point of view with great complex characters, which is more than I can say for a lot of the genre.

Exceptional narration by Taylor-Corbett

This is a brutal, horrifying, and often quite funny book, wonderfully narrated and full of stark imagery and disturbing moments.

Brutal and wonderful

The Only Good Indians is a story of a group of friends haunted by their past. The premise is strong and most of the protagonists like-able, but the narrative flow took me out of story for long stretches of time. One scene in particular revolving around a basketball game came dangerously close to young adult fiction and was really cringey. I don’t want to give the impression I didn’t like the book but at times it was just kinda hard to get into. Also, if you’re adverse to scenes of graphic violence, this one isn’t for you. I mainly read in the horror genre but found myself wincing away from some of the more gruesome descriptions.

A decent story haunted by jarring starts and stops.

The Only Good Indians is so many important things...truly scary, perfect tight pacing, sharp and fine observations and a strong current of wry humor illuminating human foibles as well as the everyday violence of ongoing colonization ...also a powerful ethical compass, richly developed complex characters who pulse with life (natural and supernatural!), concern with human and more than human relations. Recommending it to everyone!

Best novel this year and longer...
