Historia
As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more and more woven into our everyday lives—and underpins so much of the infrastructure we rely on—the ethical, security, and privacy implications require a critical approach that draws not simply on the programming and algorithmic foundations of the technology. Bringing together legal studies, philosophy, cybersecurity, and academic literature, Beyond the Algorithm examines these complex issues with a comprehensive, easy-to-understand analysis and overview.

I think this is a good book, but absolutely do not get the Audible version
Revisado: 04-20-25
OK, this will be a weird review.
I actually do think the book has valuable content.
That said, the audible version was simply painful.
The point of an audible book is to be able to listen to it while you’re out and about, and just generally on the go.
But the fact that this audible came with several hundred page PDF, meant that literally every other paragraph they’re referencing the attached PDF.
That made this extremely tedious to try to listen to.
Thus, while I think, reading the book, either Hart printer Kindle, would be fine, I simply can’t recommend this as an audible book.

In Plays Well With Others, Eric Barker dives into these questions, drawing on science to reveal the truth beyond the conventional wisdom about human relationships. Combining his compelling storytelling and humor, Barker explains what hostage negotiation techniques and marital arguments have in common, how an expert con-man lied his way into a twenty-year professional soccer career, and why those holding views diametrically opposed to our own actually have the potential to become our closest, most trusted friends.

This is one of the few audible books. I’ve listened to multiple times.
His book is so well laid out. In a very methodical, but highly engaging way, it guides you along a path that will help you better understand overall human nature, and hopefully yourself.
I really can’t recommend this quick enough

AI will be the defining development of the 21st century. Within two decades, aspects of daily human life will be unrecognizable. AI will generate unprecedented wealth, revolutionize medicine and education through human-machine symbiosis, and create brand-new forms of communication and entertainment. In liberating us from routine work, however, AI will also challenge the organizing principles of our economic and social order.

The other reviews on here were right about this… Unfortunately
Revisado: 01-09-25
First off, I do have to get the author credit for a relatively novel idea in AI literature: Using fictional stories as a lead in to an in-depth discussion on the topic.
That said, unfortunately, the other reviewers were right about this.
I found the fictional stories to be too long, not terribly engaging, and very, very “woke”. No, it doesn’t matter what side of the political spectrum you’re on, but the “woke” aspects really seem to just be roped into stories unnecessarily. They didn’t add anything to meaningfully improve the story or to hammer a point across. They were there “just because“.
So I can’t recommend this book. Even if you were given it for free, I would not spend the time on this. There are several other books, addressing AI that are much more approachable and.

Overall, pretty disappointed
Revisado: 10-22-24
Just to get this part out-of-the-way, the narration was fine.
Regarding the book itself, I had high expectations on it, but none were realized.
I think the first three or four chapters could be cut entirely. The history of what ’got us here’ is overall irrelevant now. It was boring.
And then when addressing the threats and concerns with AI, I had two issues with this. The first issue was, I had a hard time understanding certain aspects of it. I am in the data protection field, and I thought some parts got to technical.
The second issue was OK, now that I know what the concerns are, what can I really do about them. The answer is, not much. Given that , I wonder what the point was.
Frankly, useless information, and doesn’t give you any takeaways beyond “educating yourself”.
Like I said, pretty disappointing

Probably a 4 star READ, but only a 3 star LISTEN
Revisado: 10-04-24
First off, I actually really appreciate the author taking a stab at addressing AI in the context of data privacy. There are not too many other books that are doing this.
As a note in my title. I would not recommend this on audible, but I suspect it would be a really good Kindle or hardcopy.
I also think this would be good for someone who is rather green to this field. If you’re relatively brand new to privacy, and especially if you don’t have any foundations in AI lingo, I think this would be a good book for you.
If you’ve been doing this for awhile, then while There are some parts of the book that will be of value, I don’t think you’ll find much new under the sun here.
Personally, my big issue with this book is how repetitive a lot of the parts are. There’s only so many times I wanted to hear the definitions of homomorphic encryption, federated privacy, differential privacy, etc.
Once again, if you’re new to data privacy and AI, maybe you need to hear that a lot. But geez Louise, listening to it got painful near the end.
Once again, I would take a stab at the Kindle or hardcopy version. Given the number of lists the author notes throughout the audible version, it’s hard to keep track sometimes of what’s being covered.

Historia
Aram Sinnreich and Jesse Gilbert explore the many unpredictable, and often surprising, ways in which data surveillance, AI, and the constant presence of algorithms impact our culture and society in the age of global networks. The authors build on this basic premise: no matter what form data takes, and what purpose we think it’s being used for, data will always have a secret life. How this data will be used, by other people in other times and places, has profound implications for every aspect of our lives—from our intimate relationships to our professional lives to our political systems.

Good info crushed by beyond the pale bias
Revisado: 09-28-24
This book really contains some pretty important topics and information related to data protection, privacy, etc.
Unfortunately, the authors have such an over-the-top bias when it comes to presenting this information that it severely distracts from what they’re trying to convey.
Usually, it doesn’t matter to me one way or the other an authors “world view” leanings.
The problem with this book is that literally EVERY example doesn’t just ‘lean’ one way, it flat out topples and falls in a ‘massive avalanche’ one way.

The most important fact about the coronavirus pandemic that turned the world upside down in 2020 is that our response to it has been an epic overreaction driven by a disastrous confluence of public and private interests - all of them purporting to “follow the science”. Since the lockdowns began, millions of Americans have relied on the reporting of Alex Berenson. Exposing the hysteria and manipulation behind the worst failure of public policy since World War I, this clear-eyed journalist has been a critical source of reason and truth.

It’s hard to argue with any of this research
Revisado: 05-11-22
I admit, I definitely succumbed to the trepidation at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
But after listening to this audiobook not once, but twice, there’s so many issues Mr Berenson has brought up that should be intensely followed up on to review/Investigate.
While I may not agree with everything he’s written about. But if we truly claim to be “science based”, then we need to keep an open mind and have addressed the myriad of these very, very legitimate observations and concerns.
Thus, regardless of which side of the political aisle you fall on, I think you’ll find this fascinating and concerning read.

Historia
In The Bible Is a Catholic Book, Jimmy Akin shows how the Bible cannot exist apart from the church. In its origins and its formulation, in the truths it contains, in its careful preservation over the centuries, and in the prayerful study and elucidation of its mysteries, Scripture is inseparable from Catholicism. This is fitting, since both come from God for our salvation. If you're a Catholic who sometimes gets intimidated by the Bible, The Bible Is a Catholic Book will help you better understand and take pride in this gift that God gave the world through the church.

While there certainly plenty of books that go into more depth on the various topics that are covered here, this book does a great job of giving a good overall summary of why the Bible is indeed Catholic.
If you are looking for a great introduction on various Catholic vs Protestant topics regarding questions about the Bible, look no further then this book.

Only for the absolute beginner
Revisado: 11-24-21
I really wanted to like this book. However, it’s so basic as to be borderline useless.
I will say that if you absolutely know nothing about bitcoin, cryptocurrencies , etc. then you might get something out of this.
However, if you know absolutely nothing about bitcoin or cryptocurrencies, they were certain sections (like the mining section) that were just silly to include. No neophyte is going to run out and even consider mining bitcoin
Also, the overall investing advice of using volatility to your advantage, be careful about when to buy, etc. is once again so overwhelmingly general as to be superfluous.
I just can’t recommend this book.
If you’re truly interested in bitcoin cryptocurrency, thenI would suggest reading everything and anything by Lyn Alden instead. That would be time much better spent.

A powerful, moving, heartbreaking, and beautiful piece of work
Revisado: 10-07-20
Obviously Mr. Allen is already well known for his previous works, all of which are terrific reads.
It’s my opinion , though, that this is his greatest work to day.
You come away with such an appreciation of Life. How the Life of all children are to be treasured, protected, and cherished. How overcoming the obstacles - and certainly in the attempt to do so - in the course of nurturing children is what fundamentally (should so anyway) define our most basic humanity.
Would that all children, at every stage of Life, be so loved.
