Historia
Major Dirk Pitt picked up the frantic distress call as he cruised his lumbering amphibious plane over the islands of the Aegean. Brady Air Force base was under fire, its entire force of jets destroyed on the ground...by just one First World War biplane! A psychotic ex-Nazi, a bloodthirsty Greek strongman and a beautiful double agent set Pitt on the trail of the warped mastermind behind a devastating sabotage plot. And on that trail, danger and death are never far behind....

Whoa! Misogynistic violence.
Revisado: 09-27-24
I’ve read so many Clive Cussler books and really enjoyed them. Which is why I was shocked when Dirk hit a woman in the face to wake her up to the fact that she’s been mourning her husband for too long. And that because she’s a beautiful woman, she belongs to any man who sees her and thus owes it to them to be available again. And then he “takes” her. She’s thrilled with his actions and he makes another misogynistic remark about women’s sexuality. Mayday was written 50 years ago when attitudes were different, but I was 16 then and I can guarantee that his behavior wasn’t okay then, either. I’ve returned Mayday and will confine myself to later Cussler books.

Historia
In 2008, nine mountaineers failed to return from a winter backpacking trip in the New Mexico mountains. At their final campsite, searchers found a bizarre scene: something had appeared at the door of their tent so terrifying that it impelled them to slash their way out and flee barefoot to certain death in a blizzard. Despite a diligent search, only six bodies were found, two violently crushed and inexplicably missing their eyes. The case, given the code name “Dead Mountain” by the FBI, was never solved. Now, two more bodies from the lost expedition are unexpectedly discovered in a cave.

The narration is so bad I have to buy the book.
Revisado: 08-29-23
I’m assuming that I’ll like the book because I’ve enjoyed all of the authors’ books so far. However, I can’t really evaluate the story because I just can’t listen to the narrator anymore. Every male character sounds the same. And, the struggle the narrator goes through when trying to get her voice low enough to represent a male character evinces itself in a kind of taut exhalation sound at the end of each sentence. I found myself exhaling and then holding my breath as she struggled. I’m going to buy the book and start the story over since I’ve been so distracted by the narration that I haven’t enjoyed or retained the story as I expected to. I have to wonder what it would’ve been like to have Lorelei King as the narrator. Wonderful, I bet.

Historia
A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

Great story, but narration lacking
Revisado: 03-10-22
Preston and Child are two of my favorite authors and as usual their story was a great one. Unfortunately, several times I was jarred out of the story by the narration. Sometimes halting or awkward, often making character identification difficult, the narrator wasn’t able to make the characters sound natural. Spoiler alert!
Especially bothersome, was hearing Agent Pendergast speaking in an English accent. Agent Pendergast, as we have learned through so many books, is from New Orleans and speaks with a cultured New Orleans accent. It was impossible to really envision Pendergast in the room when he was speaking with an English accent. Truly disappointing at a moment of great surprise in the story.

Historia
Perhaps thanks to TV period dramas, the popular imagination may picture the Edwardian era as an idyllic window between the wars, a time of manners and tea on the lawn. But below the surface lies a frenetic and often bizarre age where scientific leaps forward went hand in hand with belief in fairies, and secrets of sex, lies and murder simmered. Across 12 episodes, in this sequel to his Victorian Secrets, Stephen Fry uncovers some of the startling and unexpected hidden histories of the Edwardians.

Constant music in background
Revisado: 10-11-21
I would love to be able to listen to this book without the incessant music playing in the background. I think it would be very interesting, but I cannot stand having the music constantly playing beneath the voices of the reader.

Historia
A seemingly straightforward private case turns out to be much more complicated - and sinister - than Special Agent A. X. L. Pendergast ever could have anticipated. Pendergast, together with his ward, Constance Greene, travels to the quaint seaside village of Exmouth, Massachusetts, to investigate the theft of a priceless wine collection. But inside the wine cellar, they find something considerably more disturbing: a bricked-up niche that once held a crumbling skeleton.

Historia
It's Dr. Kay Scarpetta's birthday, and she's about to head to Miami for a vacation with Benton Wesley, her FBI profiler husband, when she notices seven pennies on a wall behind their Cambridge house. Is this a kids' game? If so, why are all of the coins dated 1981 and so shiny they could be newly minted? Her cellphone rings, and Detective Pete Marino tells her there's been a homicide five minutes away. A high school music teacher has been shot with uncanny precision as he unloaded groceries from his car.

Revisado: 04-03-15
The last sentence of the book seems to indicate that something is about to happen, that we're in the middle of something, and that's it? I have to go to the store to see a print version to make sure that's really the end.
The performance is super.

Really disappointing.
Revisado: 03-06-15
Incredibly and unnecessarily gory, if this were a movie it'd be rated R for violence. And the performance made the women sound arch and cutesy, even though these women are PhDs. The story could've been so much better without the violence and with the addition of more archaeological fantasy. The descriptions of the archaeological sites were wonderful.

Light-hearted fun.
Revisado: 12-01-14
If you could sum up Her Royal Spyness in three words, what would they be?
Fun, silly, and engaging.
What other book might you compare Her Royal Spyness to and why?
It reminds me of an episode or two of Upstairs, Downstairs, but more light-hearted. It's from the same era and gives insight into the lives of both the rich and titled, and the working class.
What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I actually disliked the voice she gave to one of the characters. It influenced my picture of the character too much. I've since bought several books in the series, but not in the audio format.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No.
Any additional comments?
A good book to listen to while cleaning!
