This must have been a good story because when I started the audiobook and realized I’d read it in kindle format already I chose to let it play on. The sleight accent the narrator put on really helped with the alien feel to the relationship. With the meat of the book reading like an episode of Survivor (which I don’t watch) I didn’t know what to expect, plus the descriptions of heat and humidity were just too real - so sticky. And we can’t forget the menagerie of alien creatures. I’m glad at least one was friendly.

I ugly cried through the whole last chapter. It’s exhausting, but that’s one way to judge a good book. Burrows had truly made me care about the characters if certain events wrecked me. And I still have hopes and regrets about those characters. Speaking of which we see a bit more into the brothers in this volume, and I mostly like what I see. I still love how Burrows includes animals and children in her stories offering a different sort of romance. An old mare and a marmalade cat feature prominently in this book, but that’s not all. Lady Violet needs a dog.

How cool to be back in San Diego again. Even though the sights don’t figure in the plot, it just feels familiar. I like how the characters are both insecure to a degree but insist on being openly honest. Because it starts in Hawaii we get to see the characters on two fronts. Finally, after so many books, Stoker managed to come up with another original story. Well, sort of original. We all pretend we dont see the formula. Hahaha

Early on I let the similarities to Twilight and Harry Potter distract me: magical kids, boarding school, teen angst, warring factions... then I tried to focus on the fresh parts. The arctic setting was interesting. The cold was almost a character in the story. Solving secrets was also fun, even though were solved by characters blurting things out. I could appreciate the language and sentence structure, so the tone and of course details separate it from other YA paranormal fiction. I did want to jump in and kick Uncle Finn in the butt a few times.

The story is trite, and the two-sided characters are difficult to believe. The worst part is the fact that the Narration is AI. Some words are mispronounced. The erotic scenes are pretty emotionless too. Blah

I’m so pleased to discover that the series did not peter out as it approached to end. You know, the curse of the sequel. Truck has been an interesting and magnetic character throughout the other books. The connection he has with Annie, the support he gives his team in their relationships, his gentle, caring medical assistance, especially with Fish all make him compelling, so when the mystery of his relationship unfolds we are invested. Some dark topics make this a bit different than the earlier episodes, plus the epilogue is super satisfying as a way to tie up the series. Now go find another series!

, I just finished a book that I enjoyed and thought of you. I’m not sure of your taste in fiction, but the science and the love story make an interesting cocktail, or should I say ‘solution?’ It also has criminal investigation in Victorian London, so there’s a bit of a Sherlock Holmes flavor. Plus the male lead, a gov agent is Scottish, so listening to the audio version had that extra tid bit of entertainment. Ok, so there is lovemaking in the book as a lot of romance stories have, but it’s all one relationship and not smutty. I hope if it sounds interesting you’ll try it.

It seems getting together was never as fraught with pitfalls as the “courtship” of Evan and August. Unlike other American heiress tropes this story does not rely on pronunciation, fashion, or cultural speed bumps but keeps it human by circling around relatable conflicts like motives for marriage, catty bullying, manipulative parents, and insecurities. On the surface it’s about money, but really it’s not.

This book features a great napoleonic war story, a little peek into PTSD, and the common trope of a breakdown in communication. It’s more about longing than panting and has some decent suspense. The problem is that in audible form it has the most cringy narration ever. The English accent goes beyond posh and sound put on and like she’s trying too hard. Her lips pop near the mic at the end of most words. The rhythm that could be lilting is rather artificially up and down creating awkward and misplaced emphasis. Be sure to sample the narration before spending any money on this to make sure you can stand the Stepford voice.

Like the other knitting in the city books Code of Honor features unique characters, interesting settings and pretty realistic conflicts; yet this novel has something else. It features many fun aspects of language that I love. The title with its double meaning tickles me. Darius and his “fifty-cent-words” makes his character even more endearing. But the best thing is the whimsy and poetry in the way the two characters talk to each other.
