A straightforward and (at times) humorous recounting of the authors memory of serving in the British Army during the Burma Campaign. If you are the pearl clutching woke type looking for regret and angst from the author for having served during a brutal war, you will be disappointed.
This book is also not a high-level, strategy driven recounting with detailed maps, etc. It is a 'simple' narrative of a common soldier. What it is really, is an honest account of men in difficult circumstances and the various personalities of those men. I think it's also a great snapshot of the opinions and thoughts of those men (at that time) without a bunch of sanitized revisionist history. It is real.

A really GREAT story and narration was dead on. Few are this good. Filled in a lot of blanks for me on the WWII air war from the 'other side'. Thanks!

The second novel in the Sid Halley storyline, this picks up smoothly from where 'Odds Against' finished. I like the Sid Halley character/storyline and very much enjoyed the narration by Simon Preeble.

I really enjoyed the first Neal Carey book and gave it a good review. I also enjoyed the 2nd book - it was a fascinating look back at China during the time of the 'Cultural Revolution.'' So, I started this one with high hopes, but... ironically, for a book that is fundamentally about fighting against bigotry, hatred and narrow-mindedness, the author is guilty of the same - he portrays virtually every white, conservative Christian as ignorant, right-wing, neo-Nazi extremist, sociopaths that hate everyone except other white conservative Christians (not an exaggeration). It got so bad towards the end that I had to put it down. It really is a shame. I have enjoyed reading Winslow up to this point but he let his own narrow-minded cultural biases get the better of him.

I have not read anything by Don Winslow before, so I did not know what to expect. The fact that this was offered for free as part of my Audible membership made me equally unsure. However, this was actually a very nice surprise. In fact, I was sorry to see the recording come to an end. I hope Winslow has written more works that include the principal characters. I will definitely be looking. Ditto for the narration - he was excellent. I will certainly be looking for further works that he has narrated. Thank you to Audible for this unexpected gem.

This is a good read - not 'great' in the sense of 'top ten list of classic literature' great... but enjoyable. Simon Vance is, as usual, very good.

I am a huge fan of Graham Greene and, equally, of Patrick Tull. Mr Tull perfectly brought two of my favorite characters to life: Captain Aubrey and Steven Maturin (by Patrick O'Brian). So it was with some excitement that I saw he was the reader of one of my favorite Greene novels and he didn't disappoint. Well done.

As a fan of ACD's Sherlock Holmes stories I was initially skeptical of the premise of these books but I have been pleasantly surprised to be proved wrong. Very shortly into the first book I found a highly likeable and intriguing character in Ms. Holmes. In the subsequent books there has been time to develop that character (and others) further which, in turn, has led to plotlines that are both complex but logical. With these books getting from Point A to Point B often takes many unexpected turns but it makes sense when you arrive. Well done. I am really looking forward to seeing where Ms. Thomas takes us next.
As for Ms. Reading's performances... brilliant.

Kidnapped is a classic (and rightfully so) but this version had one glaring defect that made listening more annoying than pleasurable... the narrator, inexplicably, chose to make young David Balfour (who was close to 18 years old) sound like a child of six or seven. This was made even more glaring by the fact that the narrator did a fine job with the voice characterizations of all the other characters. Disappointing.

I wanted to like these books but... where to start?...
The characters: the two main characters have potential but they have not really been very well fleshed out. They lack depth. The female characters are worse, by far. One other reviewer mentioned the female characters as 'one dimensional'... well said. You get the impression that the sum total of the writers experience with women was in high school and even then he wasn't really paying much attention. The female characters are so cliche that its hard to take them seriously. Perhaps this writer should team up with a woman writer to write his female characters dialog or at least start paying attention to the women in his life.
The story: like me, this author clearly likes history and exploration and clearly likes taking the road less traveled and exploring alternative history. All good. However, for it to be good fiction it has to be plausible (even far-fetched works if the rest is there ‐ great/good dialog, likable/memorable characters, etc.). These books push well past plausible into the realm of the absurd and with the addition of one-dimensional characters and insipid dialog you are just left feeling like you are wasting time on something pointless.
The narration: he gets some of it right but fails miserably with the female characters. It's just an average performance at best. He should study the masters of the trade like Patrick Tull reading Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series to hear what a truly gifted narrator can do with first class writing. However, this reader is working with pretty poor material - so its not entirely his fault.
Bottom line, these books (I barely finished the first two) come across as rough drafts based on some notes taken while researching some potentially intriguing quirks of alternative history that have been loosely cobbled together to form the basis of... what? a fictional narrative? A far-fetched theory of human history disguised as fiction? Who knows... a disappointment in any case.
