Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

I don’t get the hype
Revisado: 03-03-25
I don’t get the hype.
There was no plot. There was no world building. There was hardly any character in Murderbot himself and no personality at all in the other characters. There was supposed to be humor, but I couldn’t find it. The writing was very simplistic.
So… yeah. I really don’t get it. I was mostly bored.

Progressive drivel
Revisado: 01-18-25
No actual discussion about phones and social media. Parents are evil far right idiots. Kids are mentally broken freedom fighters. Too bad. I’m sure they could have found ton of research out there. It’s a subject with so many subtleties and contradictions, a true discussion would have been really interesting. But I guess that would take actual effort to produce a well researched episode, when instead you can just talk about how terrible non progressives are.

Still fun, but less funny
Revisado: 01-12-25
It’s still fun, and I love all the characters and the writing style.
But.
I had 2 major problems with it.
First, I didn’t feel like the theology was foreshadowed and explained enough, given how much weight it had in this final conclusion. So I was a bit confused and not sure what was happening or why.
Second, while theology and world building were more developed in this one, the actual world felt much less complex and nuanced. Mainly, it just resorted to the black and white “lightlings are bad racists, shdowkin are good oppressed”. And since you still need a “bad guy”, you have an all evil evilness. Why? Why should I feel bad for trolls for being misunderstood, but accept that there’s an evil that’s just evil and has no redeeming qualities? The whole point of the previous books was that nobody is all good or all evil. Which made the satire interesting and funny. In this one, I felt preached to for a lot of the time.
Having said that, it was still marvelously written and really funny (lawyer monks, anyone?). My issues with it were mostly around the last third of the book, when trying to conclude things made them a bit too simplistic (which relying on mythology usually does).
I still love this series, I think it’s very inventive and funny and really well written. I’ll carry Gorm with me always. :)
The audiobook narrator is simply one of the best out there. I switched from audio to text and back a lot, and in my head I read it with all his voices. Loved his performance!

Interesting, but incomplete
Revisado: 12-11-24
Going into this podcast, I thought the main discussion point was going to be how to separate the art from the artist, and how so many people around the world were able to do that specifically for Michael Jackson. But this is hardly discussed at all, if ever. Most of the episodes are interesting review of his life, specifically in relation to the allegations against him. And it all felt very well researched and really well presented. But, like I said, the main question was never answered. It’s clear that the hosts think he did it, but they never conclude anything about how was it that to this day Michael Jackson hasn’t been cancelled.
Please note - I’m not trying to say that he should have been cancelled, I’m saying that I was expecting a discussion about that at some point in the podcast.
Other than that, it was very interesting and engaging listen. I do recommend it!

Cute
Revisado: 06-25-24
I liked the world and the Victorian / Edwardian setting to it.
The characters were nice.
The vibe was cute.
The romance was a bit cringe.
The reveals were predictable.
The stakes were never truly felt.
But it passes the time just fine, and you do get engaged in it.
Loved the audiobook narration.

Meet Threadbare. He is 12 inches tall, full of fluff, and really, really bad at being a hero. Magically animated and discarded by his maker as a failed experiment, he is saved by a little girl. But she's got problems of her own, and he might not be able to help her. Fortunately for the little golem, he's quick to find allies, learn skills, gain levels, and survive horrible predicaments. Which is good, because his creator has a whole lot of enemies …

LitRPG.. not for me
Revisado: 04-27-24
I’m not a fan of LitRPG’s.
Other reviews said this isn’t like a regular LitRPG, that Tim Reynolds makes it all worth it, that the little bear is lovable.
I guess I really don’t like LitRPG, because none of these things helped to make this a proper book for me. I always feel like I’m just watching someone else playing a video game, and that’s just plain boring. There was hardly any story. Hardly any character work. So many numbers and statuses and leveling up. It’s just… silly. Granted, it would have been impossible for me to even read it without Tim Reynolds excellent narration, but even he can’t make it into a story.
So if you don’t like LitRPG - this isn’t going to change your mind about it. At least it was kinda short.

A bit mediocre
Revisado: 04-01-24
Let’s start with: it’s too long.
I don’t mind long books, if they warrant it. But this one… nothing actually happens for a very long time. And even when it does, it feels like nothing much occurs. The fairytale premise is “a girl makes shirts for her brothers while staying mute”. And the author didn’t fill it enough to make for such a long book. So it meanders and meanders as Sorcha finds her only superpower of charades and making herself extremely clear without speaking (how do you gesture “wedding”, btw?).
The other problem with this book is Sorcha’s lack of agency. She literally is being picked up from one place to another and has no say (no pun intended) in anything that happens to her. I’m not saying that I wanted her to be an action figure, but the whole thing made her feel sort of lacking in personality. It’s like.. all she does is suffer. That’s her only character trait.
The other characters likewise suffer from a one dimensional personality. Connor is wise. Red is good. Etc.
I was also not entirely sold on the magical side of the story, I guess I just didn’t quite feel it in the wiring.
However, with all it’s flaws, I was still kinda drawn to it in times and I do have some clear images in my head from it. So 3 stars from me.

Historia
The 10 enlightening (and often humorous) lectures of Medieval Myths and Mysteries will show you how far from the “dark” times of legend these centuries were. Uncover the facts about the Knights Templar. Reveal the truth behind the tales of legendary creatures like the Questing Beast and the unicorn. Trace the events of the Black Death and the ways it altered the world in its wake, and much more. With Professor Armstrong, you will dig deep into the ways that later generations reshaped the narrative of the medieval years and perpetuated the myths.

Somewhat meandering
Revisado: 02-25-24
It started out strong, but lots its shine somewhere around the middle. The place and characters were interesting in the first half of the book, then it quickly declined into Farin and the demon senseless arguments. Also, there were lots of questions opened but never answered. As if this book is just a setup for the next one. But by the end of the book, I didn’t care much for any of the characters, so I’m not that interested in the answers anymore.
I doubt I’ll read the next one.
