Historia
The latest occurrence to disturb the peace in the quaint English village of Walmsley Parva hits rather too close to home - in fact, the prime suspect has taken up residence in Edwina's potting shed. Her elderly gardener Simpkins has been secretly sleeping there after a row with his disreputable brother-in-law and housemate, Hector Lomax. When Hector is found murdered, Constable Gibbs comes looking for Simpkins, last seen arguing with Hector the night before. Based on the sad state of her garden, Edwina has grave doubts that shiftless Simpkins could muster the effort to murder anyone.

Fun series
Revisado: 04-28-25
Set in a small English village in post WW1, old school mates Beryl and Edwina set up a private investigation business. An unlikely duo, Beryl is a famous American adventuress, and Edwina is a sheltered daughter of a solicitor. They both have a unique set of skills that serve them well as private enquiry agents. In this book, Simpkins, Edwina’s elderly gardener, is accused of murdering his brother-in-law. Of course, Beryl and Edwina are on the case! The narration is excellent.

Historia
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is one of the most written about men who ever lived but despite this, some parts of his life get little attention. One such period is between 1891 and 1894 when he lived in South Norwood in present day south east London. During this period, he wrote and published much of his best work including the first two series of Sherlock Holmes short stories. This book looks at his life during this period and, in contrast to other biographies, spends time looking at some of his input into local Norwood life.

Sharing lodging in the sleepy English village of Walmsley Parva has eased some of the financial strain on the two old school chums, but money is still tight in these years following the Great War. So when the local vicar - and pigeon-racing club president - approaches them with a private inquiry opportunity, the ladies accept. There's been a spot of bother: The treasurer has absconded with the club's funds and several prized birds. Historia
The late 1890s saw Arthur Conan Doyle return to England after several years abroad. His new house, named Undershaw, represented a fresh start, but it was also the beginning of a dramatic decade that saw him fall in love, stand for parliament, fight injustice, and be awarded a knighthood. However, for his many admirers, the most important event of that decade was the resurrection of Sherlock Holmes—the character that he felt had cast a shadow over his life.

Outstanding addition to the series!
Revisado: 04-21-25
Baffled in the Boutique is the 8th in the Temp Job Cozy Mystery series by K.B. Blake. In this book, Scarlett Chase is working at a home decor boutique while the assistant is out on maternity leave. Scarlett is enjoying using her interior design expertise in this temp position, despite her prickly boss and entitled customers. It gets more complicated when a murdered woman is found in the shop, an internet scam impacts the owner and Scarlett’s investigating reveals cheating and blackmail. I love this series and the characters are relatable and likeable old friends. With each book, the reader can pick up where we left off and have another great adventure together. The character development over the course of the series is outstanding. Although each book is a standalone, there are some overarching themes and story lines that continue through the series. This book left a cliffhanger so we can be assured that Scarlett will be on the case again in the future. The narration by Amber Battaglia is outstanding. She creates unique voices and accents for all the characters. Her wonderful performance brings the characters and story to life.

Historia
Undershaw was the Surrey home of Arthur Conan Doyle between 1897-1907. Built lovingly for his wife Touie to help treat her ongoing battle with tuberculosis, Arthur created a haven for his wife and family. It was here he wrote The Hound of The Baskervilles, brought Sherlock Holmes back to life in "The Empty House", and entertained guests such as writer J.M. Barrie, illustrator Sidney Paget, renowned actor William Gillette, and more.

I found this book to be a good overview of Arthur Conan Doyle’s life and times at his home Undershaw. It’s interesting that he so disliked his most famous character Sherlock Holmes, but didn’t Agatha Christie hate Poirot? Glad to hear the Undershaw was restored. The narration was excellent.

Lestrade heard a shout of warning as he rounded the corner and ducked just in time to avoid getting hit in the face. His would-be assailant swore as Lestrade turned back toward him. Sweat dripping, face contorted into a scowl, he turned as if to escape back the way they had just come only for Smith to catch up, blocking his exit.

Revisado: 04-21-25
This book is a story of a newly promoted Inspector Lestrade. He is assigned to investigate the murder of a woman in the dangerous area of London’s East End. Lestrade is investigating, while trying to find someone to care for the victims 2 young children. A very interesting story, but the narration was distracting. The narrator’s performance varied the accents of the characters and they often sounded US-southern.

A fearful officialdom has declared Sherlock persona non grata but is suffering the wrath of public opinion for its failure to bring the murderer to justice.

Sherlock Holmes and the Menacing Monk is an excellent book. I loved this story and especially the rhyming verses. I was awed by the ability to tell the story in this poetic form. The narration by Steve White is outstanding. I was so impressed how he so effortlessly narrated the story in rhyme.
