Hmm
Revisado: 04-17-25
this one was weird. sometimes I felt like the main character matured and other times she felt so unstable.
I really couldn't accept why she hated the emperor so much. and she had very little respect for him, though they seemed to share very similar ideals.
The first book was very well written but this one felt like ideas that didn't quite land - in terms of character development/motives.

I wanted to wring Hala's neck at times. Then I had to think of her as Michael from The Office, then it was a more entertaining story, lol

the narration
Revisado: 02-01-25
Whichever one of the narrators does Sage's POV.. HORRIBLE. I have literally no idea why she made Noah sound like a 80 year old smoker. is she aware that Noah is a young woman who dresses in pastels and cries a lot...? does this narrator even take into account the characters personalities before making a voice.
and the narrator that does Noah's POV sounds like a newscaster. they should've just gotten the newscaster voice to read the whole book. at least she's tolerable.
the story is good so far but the narration is so distracting. sound like the he narrators are trying their damnedest to ruin the book.

bothersome Narrator
Revisado: 01-01-25
Narrators usually bring a book to life but this did just the opposite. The narrator talks like she has food in her mouth and her enunciation needs work.
Side note: her African accent is REMARKABLY bad - which was especially surprising as her name looks African.
The storyline felt rushed in some places and dragged out in other places that seemed unimportant. Overall, their story was entertaining enough but not very believable.
if you decide to go for this book, I would 10000% recommend reading the book over listening to it.

same ol fake relationship trope
Revisado: 12-10-24
the story was well written for a common romance storyline. I liked that their issues were believable. But personally, I find the "fake relationship" trope the least interesting plotline of all.
Unless the characters are in politics or Hollywood, it's just such an immature concept most of the time.
The book was okay, I just find this trope very annoying and unreasonable for fully grown adults. (American) Romance writers should try to be more original/creative.

meh .. she's written better.
Revisado: 11-25-24
There was no character development of the main character. It was honestly hard to see why anyone would fall in love with her. And it seemed like the guy only liked her because she didn't know he was a public figure.
The narrator's American accent was horrible. The writing of the American character wasn't the best either. its good for a surface level filler book while flying or something
side note: There needs to be a new narrator. Karen Cass is good but all Portia McIntosh books start to sound the same when read by the same person.

Insufferable protagonist
Revisado: 11-14-24
I thought the first book was pretty good, well-paced, and well written.
I understood the motivation of each character and could empathize with their points of view.
But this book was INSUFFERABLE. Authors need to learn to strike a balance between writing main characters that make mistakes and main characters being irrationally obstinate and annoying.
I understand she is a teenager but come on. I read the book actively searching for redeeming qualities and came up short. I struggled to really see why someone would want to be friends or fall for her.
It seems like if there are ever choices to be made, Brianna chooses - not just a less ideal choice but - the wrongest of the wrong choice. The choice ALWAYS leads to disaster and she thinks she can just apologize. She wholeheartedly made decisions that made her a helpless victim most of the book. She consistently refuses to use her brain, jeopardizing the whole squad, and not learn from past DEATHS!
By the halfway point, when she exclaims "I have an idea!!" I rolled my eyes because I am convinced she is a moron (nothing she has done has proven otherwise). It was very hard to believe this was a black girl, born and raised in the South. She was wayyyyyy too naive to be remotely believable.
I honestly prefer Alice. I wish she was the protagonist.
The world building and everyone else still seemed likeable. But hopefully we can end the tedious meandering, find a plot, and wrap this up quickly.
The narration was just okay. The reading didn't flow naturally. It sounded like she was reading, instead of talking.

I loved everything about this book. I had it on my wishlist for months! I wish I would've read it sooner. it has all of the elements of a great story without being triggering of black trauma.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one and it piqued my interest in NY history.

the female narrator's reading style and male voice is ...subpar. I would've given less stars but the male narrator was good.
the romance is very predictable and the female protagonist is a bit annoying. This is good for mindless holiday filler in between books you really want to read.
