Historia
Everyone believes Adam to be something he’s not. Sometimes that’s because he’s told them a story. Sometimes he’s told himself one. But when Adam joins an Alaskan fishing crew that’s promising quick money, the dangerous work and harsh lifestyle strip away all fabrications and force a dark-hearted exploration of who he really is. On the unforgiving Bering Sea, Adam finds the adventure and authenticity of a fisherman’s life revelatory. The labor required to seize bounty from the ocean invigorates him, and the often crude comradery accompanies a welcome, hard-earned wisdom.

Crude, slow, lost interest.
Revisado: 10-25-24
Chapter 24 and very little has actually happened. A LOT of "character development" and description of life on an Alaskan fishing boat. Adolescent males would love this - lots of "F-bombs" lots of "humor" about defecation, male anatomy, and violence. I forced myself to get this far. I get it - life in the Bering sea fishing fleet is arduous, violent, dangerous, and crude. Not for everyone. Where's the plot? Don't tell me it begins after chapter 24? An extremely crude and clumsy attempt at a modern mix of "Captain's Courageous" and "Moby Dick." (Not sure if that is what the author was aiming at.) Narrator has mispronounced several words. Narration is the irritating style (at least to me) of emphasis on words and stress on syllables placed oddly. Was this intended to keep listener disturbed? Just annoying to me. Narration feels like a first read through.

Historia
Ten-year-old best friends Nathan and Adam really liked Joe. He was their friend, an artist, the man they spoke to through the wire fence of the lunatic asylum. But something happened behind those walls, in those rooms, on the grounds, at the river. Joe sketched it all - fine lines, truth in the negative space, truth in the pencil strokes. And then, he was gone.

Needs polishing
Revisado: 10-25-24
Dialogue feels forced and unnatural, especially between the kids. Not a lot of depth but the attempt was there. Book was set in Australia yet narrated with a very flat Midwest (?) American accent, just a bit off putting. I just never got fully engaged.

Absolutely lyrical. Excellent writing. So many memorable lines. Intelligent, compassionate insights into the human condition. heart, and mind, but rarely didactic. A modern epic full of fascinating characters and unexpected turns - just like life. Narration was perfect. Just brilliant.

This is a tough one
Revisado: 12-22-23
While narration was excellent, the unfamiliar accent made it a bit difficult to follow. (But who doesn't love a Scottish accent?) Child abduction and murder are never easy to read/write about, but Raymond manages it without the subject derailing the plot. Characters are deep and diverse enough to hold interest. Looking forward to more in the series.

Historia
DS George Cross has always wondered why his mother left him when he was a child. Now she is back in his life, he suddenly has answers. But this unexpected reunion is not anything he's used to dealing with. When a disturbing case lands on his desk, he is almost thankful for the return to normality. The body of a monk is found savagely beaten to death in a woodland near Bristol. Nothing is known about Brother Dominic's past, which makes investigating difficult. How can Cross unpick a crime when they don't know anything about the victim? And why would someone want to harm a monk?

Good plot, great characters
Revisado: 12-22-23
The "different" detective has been almost been overdone, but few as well as George. Brilliant yet irritating. I have listened to all five of the series and cannot wait for more. The characters and their relationships are almost as intriguing as the mystery itself. Entertaining and endearing.

Definitely a "guy's book".
Revisado: 11-28-23
Lots of overreaching metaphors and descriptions of gore and violence. Lots of body fluid humor. Plot moves a bit slow due to flashbacks/memories technique. Narrator is difficult for me to understand often dipping down into a near whisper or trailing off into a grunt. All female characters sound like spoiled midwestern adolescents. Struggling to finish - fast forwarding through gratuitous violence descriptions. Just not my cup of blood, but that's just me.
