Historia
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Historia
In retreat from a devastating loss and crushing injustice, Katie lives alone in a fortresslike stone house on Jacob’s Ladder island. Once a rising star in the art world, she finds refuge in her painting. The neighboring island of Ringrock houses a secret: a government research facility. And now two agents have arrived on Jacob’s Ladder in search of someone—or something—they refuse to identify. Although an air of menace hangs over these men, an infinitely greater threat has arrived, one so strange even the island animals are in a state of high alarm.

Poorly crafted
Revisado: 01-28-25
I am a big Dean Koontz fan, but this one was rushed, chaotic and poorly crafted. Sadly, I just didn’t enjoy it.

Really enjoyed this. I did get lost frequently among the many different narrators. Even so, this was a wonderfully satisfying read.

Didn’t finish - couldn’t make myself care
Revisado: 01-10-25
Nine hours in, and I had to stop listening. I found that I was forcing myself to listen. I just never felt a connection to any of the characters. It didn’t help that the narrator never changed her voice no matter who was speaking, male or female. And since the story switches between several main characters and several stories, everything seemed to blend together. I couldn’t seem to make myself care about any of them, and life is short. Right? Too bad.

A little too grisly
Revisado: 12-30-24
I loved this entire series . Great world building. Strong storyline. Fascinating characters. The battles here though were too graphic for my tastes, Realistic? Perhaps. But let me use my imagination. The detailed descriptions of killing and maiming, etc. in this final book was too much for me.

Foolish people doing idiotic things
Revisado: 12-02-24
I felt like I was watching one of those teen horror flicks where someone decides to go take a shower by themselves while everyone else is screaming and running. Idiotic choice after idiotic choice. Odd assumptions. My eyeballs hurt from rolling them so often. The best thing about the book was the final 20 minutes. Was it worth the previous 11 hours. No. Not sure why I finished. Pure stubbornness, I guess. I'd give this one a pass.

Gives as good as she gets. Not for white women?
Revisado: 10-20-24
As a white #not too fat woman, I felt generalized, demeaned and minimalized by the author - exactly as her characters felt. I suppose that was on purpose? If you can get past this (as I eventually did), the writing is beautiful and there are many wonderful, powerful messages for all women. Yes, even the white ones and (dare I say it) the slender ones. I wish I could recommend it to all my friends, but I don't think I can.
