The story was one-note as far as plot, and there was no real character development. I usually enjoy Henry James but by the end of this one I felt battered and unsatisfied.

The colorful Cossack way of life is made alive and real in this historical novel.
Tolstoy's first novel and acknowledged as one of his best, it is based on his own forays into the Caucasus, abandoning his aristocrat life of gambling and carousing in Moscow and volunteering to be attached to the regular army.

A simple story told in superb prose. The narrator was excellent and kept the plot flowing, each character in its own voice and unique from the others. Highly recommend.

Great book, horrible performance
Revisado: 04-25-25
I love Henry James and was eager for this book. The story was great but completely ruined by the narrator. He was flat, monotoned and dull. The mispronunciations were terrible. (The sister’s name is Sarah, not Sally; the daughter’s name is Mamie, not “Mammy.”) I was gritting my teeth through the last few chapters just to get to the end. Find another version with a better narrator and you’ll thoroughly enjoy the book.

Historia
Prince Lyov Nikolayevitch Myshkin is one of the great characters in Russian literature. Is he a saint or just naïve? Is he an idealist or, as many in General Epanchin's society feel, an "idiot"? Certainly his return to St. Petersburg after years in a Swiss clinic has a dramatic effect on the beautiful Aglaia, youngest of the Epanchin daughters, and on the charismatic but willful Nastasya Filippovna. As he paints a vivid picture of Russian society, Dostoyevsky shows how principles conflict with emotions - with tragic results.

Talk about losing the plot
Revisado: 04-23-25
I recently finished The Brothers Karamazov and eagerly started this book right away. The first third was engaging but the rest was a slog. The repetition is mind numbing and the plot goes nowhere. The whole story is wrapped up in the last three chapters but I was beyond caring at that point.

Historia
Often considered one of the first ever psychological thrillers, Crime and Punishment is a gripping tale of a poverty-stricken young man in Saint Petersburg, Russia, who hatches a plan to kill someone for money. Once the deed is done, he finds himself racked with guilt, confusion and disgust for his act. In this new recording, Will Poulter gives new life to the troubled protagonist, Rodion Raskolnikov, in a performance that will have you questioning where we draw the line between right and wrong.

Excellent story, decent narration
Revisado: 03-21-25
FYI - don’t read the very last review as it contains spoilers. The story was gripping and complex, exploring various social aspects from many different points of view. The narrator did a good job with the voices of characters, but most narrators do this well. Otherwise his delivery was slow and flat. Listen to Thandiwe Newton’s amazing narration of War and Peace, and you’ll understand what I mean.

A challenge to the moral climate of the day, The Reef follows the fancies of George Darrow, a young diplomat en route from London to France, intent on proposing to the widowed Anna Leath. Unsettled by Anna's reticence, Darrow drifts into an affair with Sophy Viner, a charmingly naive and impecunious young woman whose relations with Darrow and Anna's family threaten his prospects for success.

Not her best
Revisado: 02-05-25
I’ve listened to many of Wharton’s works - novels, novellas and short stories - and this one lacks the lyrical (and often satirical) prose that distinguishes her from her peers. This feels more like a straightforward story, one action following the next, with none of the delightful phrases from her other works which I enjoy so much. Excellent narration.

Moneyball reveals a quest for something as elusive as the Holy Grail, something that money apparently can't buy: the secret of success in baseball. The logical places to look would be the giant offices of major league teams and the dugouts. But the real jackpot is a cache of numbers collected over the years by a strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts: software engineers, statisticians, Wall Street analysts, lawyers, and physics professors.

A fascinating look at the science of baseball and how that science can be successful on the field. I enjoyed the data as much as the stories behind it, and the narrator does an excellent job with both. Only one cringe moment - David Justice and Halle Berry? Domestic violence.

Historia
In the spring of 1914, renowned photographer August Sander took a photograph of three young men on their way to a country dance. This haunting image, capturing the last moments of innocence on the brink of World War I, provides the central focus of Powers' brilliant and compelling novel. As the fate of the three farmers is chronicled, two contemporary stories unfold.
