Historia
With one speech and thunderous applause, Chancellor Palpatine brought the era of the Republic crashing down. In its place rose the Galactic Empire. Across the galaxy, people rejoiced and celebrated the end of war—and the promises of tomorrow. But that tomorrow was a lie. Instead, the galaxy became twisted by the cruelty and fear of the Emperor’s rule.

Fantastic political thriller
Revisado: 03-18-25
Great characters portrayals examining how deeply embedded they are in their politics and how desperate is their fight against the looming darkness… unnerving to see in the face of what our own world faces today. Great sound effects like with most Star Wars productions, and excellent narrator. Recommended.

Historia
Camavor is a brutal land with a bloody legacy. Where the empire’s knights go, slaughter follows. Kalista seeks to change that. When her young and narcissistic uncle, Viego, becomes king, she vows to temper his destructive instincts, as his loyal confidant, advisor, and military general. But her plans are thwarted when an assassin’s poisoned blade strikes Viego’s wife, Isolde, afflicting her with a malady for which there is no cure. As Isolde’s condition worsens, Viego descends into madness and grief, threatening to drag Camavor down with him.

Voices make this shine
Revisado: 12-16-24
Excellent use of diverse voice case, with same voices used for the game from which this is inspired. Standalone, it is a thrilling read without need of any prior knowledge, though a viewing of Arcane or playing any of Riot Games’ Runeterra games will likely lead you to this. I especially enjoyed the conflicting passions and beliefs of the characters and how this story made those stand out and clash. I’ve read a ton of fantasy but this one is among the good ones enough to highly recommend.

Historia
At first, it looks like a disease. An epidemic that spreads through no known means, driving its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. But the force that’s sweeping the world is no pathogen. It’s just the first shock wave, unleashed by a stunning discovery - and what’s in jeopardy is not our minds but the very fabric of time itself. In New York City, Detective Barry Sutton is closing in on the truth - and in a remote laboratory, neuroscientist Helena Smith is unaware that she alone holds the key to this mystery...and the tools for fighting back.

Fun twist on time travel and is a decent background listen while working on stuff but ultimately didn’t feel immersed enough to care.

Hooks and impresses! Epic horizons kept expanding to the perfect ending of a Book One.
Revisado: 08-16-24
Better than The Expanse so far, and I loved The Expanse books. More interesting world building behind it all, the layers of which are gradually unpeeled. The subtle building of tension that unleashes fresh hells in each new part of the book is expertly balanced with attention to the relationships, psychology and sense of self of each major character. Really enjoyable development of the initial problems and I especially liked the swarm and what it suggests for the books to come. Also, excellent choice of Jefferson Mays for the narrator (he was great in The Expanse books and solid in this one, too). Looking forward to more!

Great soundscapes. Tension between characters is excellent. Some of the character choices weren’t perfectly believable in every episode in this season but overall a blast to listen to. Hopefully a fourth season is forthcoming.

“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Hooked
Revisado: 07-02-24
Excellent narration. The longer stories really stood out, especially Rattlesnakes and Danny Coughlin’s Bad Dream. Also, The Dreamers and The Answer Man. Some slower stories fizzled or felt like they needed more, but even those had me listening for longer than I should’ve. Great to have the sequel to Cujo in here, and some other tie-ins.

Paul Tremblay has won widespread acclaim for illuminating the dark horrors of the mind in novels and stories that push the boundaries of storytelling itself. The fifteen pieces in this brilliant collection, The Beast You Are, are all monsters of a kind, ready to loudly (and lovingly) smash through your head and into your heart.

Relish that titular novella
Revisado: 12-11-23
Relish that titular novella and Xe Sands’ narration of it! I’ll have to do another reading of the other stories with paperback in hand for the other stories, but that novella, that was an absolute gem. I’ll be listening to that one several times more. The story notes were great. The connections to the Tremblay novels and other stories of his are fantastic. I do love his experimentation and tendency to revisit characters in various forms.

Solid entry. If you’re a fan of Holly, and how can you not be, then you’ll love this. If not, head back to Mercedes and get reading/listening. The horror in this was…hard hitting for me at the end.
