Really liked the plot intricacies and an unexpected twist. The narrator was a bit over the top, though. I could easily imagine him on the London stage, projecting into the back row, but his dramatization was ineffective for me.

Superb narrator! But that’s about it. The story was good for a start, though it had a Victorian vibe that clashed with contemporary electronics. Some parts were silly and altogether predictable. I found myself shaking my head with embarrassment especially toward the end. Maybe this is one that shouldn’t be audio because the 2 POVs were confusing. I’d return it if it hadn’t been free!

The voicing of the little girls was dreadful. For all the money that Audible/Amazon has, they could have afforded to pay children to voice those characters. I almost quit the book with the first squeal—(egad)—followed by whining and giggling. There is no reason the listener should be subjected to an adult’s imitation of young kids, when there should have been adequate funds to cast appropriate talent. Even so, the plot was good, and the narrative wasn’t wholly ruined.

Lame sci-fi, politically charged, couldn’t get past the first 3 chapters. Too many POVs and silly acting.

Smiley was perfect, as always. Supporting cast was very good but sometimes hard to follow on audio—would have liked a book’s pages to flip through to get the characters straight sometimes

Hercule Perot is a terrific detective, but he is not up to the task of international espionage and subterfuge. Reminds me of how Superman went from “faster than speeding bullet” to ability to spin the earth backwards on its axis. The narrative performance was excellent, but the plot was ridiculous. Absurd. Spoiler? Uh no, see for yourself…

Loved this. Will endeavor to research the famous magicians Mr. Jay talked about. If ever you’ve been curious about magic, this is the book for you.

The protagonist was thoroughly dislikable, as she proudly defended wreaking havoc and property damage, taking asinine risks, and lecturing the reader on men and their aggressive tendencies. The story seems to have started as a police procedural before meandering into #metoo and immigration issues. Maybe Ms. Sten’s editor demanded more cultural relevance and an opportunity to preach on salient social issues. Too bad, because the story would have worked fine without all the noise. But maybe not. The protagonist made terrible decisions and still wondered how she got into jams. Then she would turn to the reader and cite statistics, as though she’s very intelligent instead of making blockhead decisions…
The narrator was good for the female voices, but her imitation of gruff-talking men was insufferable.

Wonderful storyline; the writer is supremely talented. My interest drifted, however, when the insomniac episodes started to drag unnecessarily—which is a complaint about the editing, not the writing. All in all, this is an outstanding novel.

I enjoyed the initial reports on the Kupcinet case; the fast tempo and jazzy background made for an exciting listen. But the style got old fast, and the sound guy should have tamped down the victims’ screams, which were way too loud for my AirPods, anyway.
I made it through the poor high school kid’s murder, and onto Sal Mineo, but I finally had enough of anguish and histrionics etc
