His voice, your peeper leanings, and the timeless tragedy a corpse cooling in the dark . Its perfection
His LA trilogy and White Jazz resonate with the same period specific tattler/hush hush dialect. He elevates it to pure art in those books, his voice adding new flesh and to the long bleached bones of the mid century crime proceedural.
it's not for everyone, and will take some readers and listeners out of the story like Donald duck or popeye voicing the thoughts of Mike Hammer. But if you embrace it, Kool kids, let it carry you through the tale on its own terms and in its own time, if you keep faith with the boku boku can you dig it vibe hes putting across like a wet blanket in dry county...
You'll stop being a mere tourist, and with outsized pride pass as native to a city and time no one but a fallen angel would call home.
Ellroy is a Raw Dog treasure beyond measure, without shame or filter. a counnesoir of the bad vibes and shame that weighs on him and every other peeper rattling the fence posts and low hanging branches with their one handed blancing act.
I hope he never shuts up.

Compelling
There is a hellhound on the trail of the author, the ghost of his mother’s unsolved murder. Will he be able to track down the man who murdered her? That would be telling. But the author’s way with words, the twin forces of anger and his passion for justice carry the listener his anger through a twining journey through the unpretty world of the poor and the criminal.

Got old fast
I enjoyed the initial reports on the Kupcinet case; the fast tempo and jazzy background made for an exciting listen. But the style got old fast, and the sound guy should have tamped down the victims’ screams, which were way too loud for my AirPods, anyway.
I made it through the poor high school kid’s murder, and onto Sal Mineo, but I finally had enough of anguish and histrionics etc

Awesome!
Ellroy was alluring and magnetic in his narration. He draws the listener in making it impossible to turn the podcast off!

Irritating delivery
His delivery is sophomoric. The intro long and sounds fake 1950’s. Doesn’t set the mood for a good murder mystery.
But I must say, the stories are interesting.
One more thing. Soundtrack gets in the way, as well.

Sick
JE tells the story with little respect for anyone in it and keeps with the same rumors of different Hollywood actors like James Dean whom he referred to as The Human Ashtray. A nickname given to him years after his death by people that only claimed to know him. Anyone can see in the many shirtless photos of JD that he had no such habit of having cigarettes put out on his chest. Ellroy is a loser.

Crude
Language was very crude making it hard to listen to. The facts were jumbled and too much unimportant information making it hard to understand the story. Will not be listening to season 2
