I just love this whole series, and this addition to the Crossbreed series didn't disappoint. Lots of action, insight into other Keystone characters which I loved, plus my favorite fictional vamp is there backing up Raven. ;) Can't wait for the next one.

Nicole Poole delivers another great narration.

First, don't go into this expecting a The Hating Game. I see many reviews making the comparison, but I think it is unfair to expect an author to stay in a box - there are just too many ideas out there and directions to explore to just recycle the same story.

That being said, I have mixed feelings about this book. I LOVE Sally Thorne's voice. She has such a witty way with words which definitely helps makes this story flow - which it needed at times. I found some parts repetitive and the beginning was a little slow, but her unique voice kept me going. I also like - as in it's my cat nip - the whole brother's best friend trope so there was that, too. And Tom is a very likeable character.

I have to admit, a couple of times Darcy was quick to excuse terrible behavior by those closest to her, and it did bug me. Also, I did not like the brother, Jamie, at all. I've seen a few comments on social media asking for his book - that would be a big pass for me.

As a whole, though, it was a good story.

For the narration, at times I had a difficulty telling whether something was inner dialog, or actually said aloud by the character. I think this is in part to the fact that it seems there is so much inner monologue going on throughout.

I love the Crossbreed Series and I love these characters - and this book delivers in the character department big time. We learn more about the people who influenced Raven, all while she's helping her dad out of jam. But Christian... we've been gifted with a a boatload of information in this installment! We get a HUGE Christian and Raven moment, more Shepard adapting to changes in his life, a new(ish) character I hope to see more of (Switch), and a new character to wish a thousand impalement woods upon. And Houdini - my one and only favorite baddie makes an appearance which left me craving more page time with him.

Highly recommend this series!

Enjoyed This Short Romance

I really enjoyed this book. It was quick and fun to listen to as Dawson and Lacey realize they were meant for each other. There is lots of attraction which sizzles between them. For a short story, I did not feel like I was missing anything - it moved along nicely. Looking forward to Aaron’s story.

The narrator was a bit slow in delivery in some places, but overall a good performance.

Action packed and surprises aplenty. I really enjoyed this installment, though when compared to Keystone (Book #1) or Deathtrap (Book #3), I have to be fair and say this one left me feeling a little angsty at the end - but no spoilers from me. I know there’s more books to come, so I’ll here impatiently waiting for book #6. :)

In another note, having listened to the first 4 audiobooks by the same narrator- I had become a fan. This one, though, just felt off a little bit for me. At times the voices seemed sped up and could tell when recordings were inserted (maybe corrections??) not exactly sure how all that works. Not so much it was an issue, but not what I’ve come to expect.

A Little Slow

The hype of this book is overrated. The pacing is slow, too many details about history, setting, furnishings, and wine. Diana has to be the oldest thirty-something I have fictionally ever met. I understand she’s an historian and very intellectual, but she seemed unbelievingly predisposed to the life of an old married couple. And Matthew is soooo much older - and she fits right in.

Speaking of Matthew, not sure I like him all the time, and definitely not at the beginning.

There were things that just bugged me. For instance, with all the cell phones, and advanced science she still relied on an answering machine. The Bishop name and family are of celebrity proportions in the witch world, the long history of the family is played up big time - and she’s the last, yet when asked if she wanted children she says she never thought about it. Not once? Even to think about the pressure of carrying on the name, or the family ending with you... nope, never crossed your mind.

Then after 24 hours of listening, I don’t understand what the happened in the house at the end - the chimney thing. ??? Like huh?

A lot of people love this trilogy, I don’t get it. And if you’re expecting a true romance, you may be disappointed, like me.

The story was pretty good - I just wish Silver exercised a bit more thought before rushing off on her own. I do love the characters, though, and the world the author has built.

Another great performance by Nicole Poole.

Let me begin by saying, after listening to the three Crossbreed books - which I absolutely loved - I was prepared to love this too. By comparison, this is definitely a starter book. I had some... issues.

Some of these same issues are mentioned in other reviews I’ve read. Like every guy in her life being in love with her. Yeah, that. I mean sure she’s the main character, but she didn’t give back as much as they gave. I felt like all her relationships were unequal to some degree. She seemed to vacillate between wanting independence and bring so dependent.

But I let this go to enjoy the story - which despite that there is plenty of great scenes and I liked the characters - especially Simon. (Can’t wait to read/listen to his story.)

There are some scenes, though, that are brutal - the world they live in is dark and harsh, there were a couple of really rough scenes. And one or two times I wanted to tell at Zoe/Silver - listen to your guardian!

All that said, knowing where this is headed, and how much I enjoyed the later books by this author, I’ll continue reading. This is just the beginning.

The narrator is awesome, btw.

Finished all three Crossbreed books back to back. I love these characters, the story, their journey. Dannika Dark gives this dark world a balance of humor, emotions, and lots of action!! Can’t wait for more!!

Nicole Poole is an awesome narrator. Christian’s voice is stuck in my head!

This second book was even more humorous than the first. I laughed out loud quite a number of times. Bar scene, that’s all I’ll say. I really like how the characters are developing - particularly Raven and Christian.

Once again the narrator did an excellent job.
