Historia
The lives of the Barretts, a normal suburban New England family, are torn apart when 14-year-old Marjorie begins to display signs of acute schizophrenia. To her parents' despair, the doctors are unable to stop Marjorie's descent into madness. As their stable home devolves into a house of horrors, they reluctantly turn to a local Catholic priest for help. Father Wanderly suggests an exorcism; he believes the vulnerable teenager is the victim of demonic possession.

Really Enjoyed This
Revisado: 10-17-21
This didn't end up being the kind of horror novel I thought it would be going in, but it actually ended up being something better. It was a breeze to listen to, and it's basically a love letter to horror, with both obvious and more subtle references to other works, characters, and authors. And the narrator crushed it. Would recommend.

Historia
"You have two days to pass your audition. You better pass it, feller. You’re joining the circus. Ain’t that the best news you ever got?" Delivered by a trio of psychotic clowns, this ultimatum plunges Jamie into the horrific alternate universe that is the centuries-old Pilo Family Circus, a borderline world between Hell and Earth from which humankind’s greatest tragedies have been perpetrated. Yet in this place - peopled by the gruesome, grotesque, and monstrous - where violence and savagery are the norm, Jamie finds that his worst enemy is himself.

I Wanted This to Be Good
Revisado: 10-12-21
It just wasn't. I kept thinking it would get better, but then it didn't. Eventually, it got to the point where I figured I'd might as well finish it. Two stars for not being so terrible I couldn't make it through.

Historia
Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

Solid, Biography
Revisado: 08-07-20
I have no qualms about discussing my general distaste for big books. Over 400 pages or 10 hours, you need a damn good reason to bring me with you.
This book has that. Truthfully, I wouldn't have ever picked this thing up, had it not been for a certain broadway show, but I'm really glad I did. I can't give it 5-stars, because there's definitely a part of me who feels like it may have been a bit too long, and at times, I did feel bogged down. However, I would definitely recommend this--especially if you came to it via the musical. It's interesting to see the source material come to life in and of itself, and it's a damn good story, and this is the whole story.
Let's be honest: A 35 hour book about the man behind the duel that most folks my age are familiar with because of an old milk commercial? No thanks. but it works. It just does.
And yes. Dude's life was hip-hop af.

In an attempt to find out, Mary Roach brings her tireless curiosity to bear on an array of contemporary and historical soul-searchers: scientists, schemers, engineers, mediums, all trying to prove (or disprove) that life goes on after we die. She begins the journey in rural India with a reincarnation researcher and ends up in a University of Virginia operating room where cardiologists have installed equipment near the ceiling to study out-of-body near-death experiences.

Not the Best, Not the Worst
Revisado: 06-18-20
I listened to about the first 3 hours, then seriously considered exchanging it. Ultimately, I finished it, and it wasn't half bad. There are moments when this book really shines, and others when I just wanted to skip ahead. It is what it is. Interesting tidbits about the history of life after death studies. If you read a ton of books, put this one on the list, why not?

Did you know that most of our dinosaur fossils were discovered because two grown men absolutely hated each other? It’s true! Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World is a riotous audio exclusive, like if Monty Python taught your history class. Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor. Choose sides: Cope or Marsh, the jerks who discovered so many dinosaurs; Hamilton or Burr, whose rivalry fueled American politics; and many more....

Entertaining enough for something I got for free.

I picked this as one of my free Originals and listened to it during a road trip. It's not bad, fairly entertaining. Not sure what they charge for it these days, but about $5 is fair.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters but it seemed to drag a bit. I wish it would have been about four hours shorter. If you like a slow build, this is for you, but I mean sloooooow.
