Historia
Thirteen-year-old Ben is sent to a remote reform program for troubled teens by a juvenile court judge. But when he arrives at the camp, located on the edge of the vast wilderness of northwestern Montana, he immediately recognizes that there is something off about the counselors. They’re too friendly and upbeat…yet Ben can tell there’s an undercurrent of menace. As he gets to know the boys in his cabin, he soon discovers that they each have far more going for them than whatever crime landed them there.

Entertaining from start to finish
Revisado: 10-12-24
It is very hard for me to finish a book because I’m admittedly very difficult to please. I have very low tolerance for poor performance, incorrect physics (usually in sci-fi), unlikable or unbelievable characters, political lessons (of any stripe), pointless chapters (ahem, Stephen King), and a number of other pet peeves. The Query brothers are new (to me) authors who recently published this book and Old Country. Old Country was better than this one. Incredibly, these are the first two books in over a year that I’ve been able to even finish. They didn’t keep me up at night afraid of bumps in the night. But they are both very entertaining with characters I cared about. Other listeners have complained that this book was slow at times (see pet peeves). I can see where they’re coming from, but the narrative in these parts was interesting and not excessive. Others have complained the narrator didn’t do a great job. I disagree. He did a fine job. I almost didn’t buy the book because of these comments. But I’m glad I did. I’ve been giving my credits away to family members but they were still stacking up. I wish these guys had more works because I’d like to use my credits for myself. I can’t ding these books a star because they aren’t on the same level as Adrian Tchaikovshy or Frank Herbert. I give the 5 stars because they were entertaining from start to finish.

Leave political crap out of my entertainment.
Revisado: 09-23-24
The AI wasn’t terrible. It lacked proper intonations relative to what was being said and mispronounced a lot of words. But it wasn’t terrible. The story seems to be written for a younger audience. But that’s ok. It’s no Mark Tufo (one of the greats in this genre), but I actually liked some of the characters and cared about what happened to them. Then the author had to start bashing republicans. I’m not a republican. I’m a right leaning independent (with liberal leanings socially). But jeeeezus, leave your petty insults for one side or the other out of my entertainment. I get that crap everywhere else. When I dive into a book, I’m trying to escape “everything else.” I’ve never understood why entertainers would alienate half their fans/customers unnecessarily. It ruined the rest of the book for me and I couldn’t finish it. The book was in the Access Catalog so I didn’t lose money. I guess you get what you pay for.

Amateurish and political
Revisado: 10-05-23
Geez, would you stop with the BS politics? Climate change this. Cops are racist that. Minus all the childish politics, the story wasn’t scary and the characters weren’t believable. I like Xe Sands, but her segments sounded like she had a face mask on and a mouth full of cotton. I couldn’t finish it. I really really tried.

Scalzi/Wheaton do it again
Revisado: 02-21-23
I’m incredibly picky. I return so many books that Audible thinks I’m scamming them and forces me to keep some of the garbage they peddle. I have dozens of titles in my library I can’t finish because of this. Most of the books I finish are more a test of my tenacity and unwillingness to completely waste $15 or whatever they charge for a credit these days. I rarely bother leaving a review, let alone a five star review. But I have yet to come across a Scalzi/Wheaton title that wasn’t thoroughly entertaining and worthy of 5 stars. This one is no different. It’s light, humorous, serious, and puzzling, all at the same time. It’s very light reading for thinking people who love sci-fi.
Careful with the Scalzi titles not narrated by Wheaton… especially sequels. I’ll leave it at that.

Historia
James Keene had it all: cars, girls, houses up and down the Gold Coast. But behind his well-connected star athlete façade was a money-obsessed drug dealer desperate to make the big score to get him out of the business. When he was sentenced to prison, it seemed the only lessons he would learn would be about navigating convict society. Instead, he was offered a chance to regain his freedom in return for going undercover in the nation’s highest security prison for the criminally insane.

Incredible story…
Revisado: 04-04-22
It could’ve been told better. It’s saving grace was that the story was so incredible. It read more like a history textbook than a story woven from stories told by Hall, the serial killer, and the government. Also, I thought there’d be more detail about Hall’s stay in the prison for the criminally insane and his life choices after prison. All in all, a very good story if you’re into true crime.

Great until it wasn’t
Revisado: 04-28-21
I’ve read reviews from David Moody’s first book in the “Haters”series that say the first book was nothing more than a setup for Book 2. I hope that is the case with this book because it is very well written and enjoyable until the deeply anticlimactic and unsatisfying end. Expect the terrible disappointment you get when you reach the end of a M. Night Shyamalan movie. Except in this case, you’ve lost almost 500 minutes of your life versus ~90 for a movie.

After reading that King buys manuscripts from unpublished authors then doubles the length with fluff, I put him down. But this is original and not full of fluff. I don’t care who wrote it. It is great from start to finish.

Thoughtful post-apocalyptic-ish
Revisado: 04-09-21
I’m a very picky reader/listener. This was in the horror section but it’s really post-apocalyptic suspense. Not what I usually listen to, but we’ll written and kept me listening to the end. The narrator was excellent.

Not his best but better than most
Revisado: 01-31-21
Against the rest of his books, this one is a 4/5 stars. But against 99% of what is being written today, it is a 6/5 stars. Why can’t publishers find really good storytellers any more?
Scott Brick narrated. His performance was flawless, as usual.

Better than I expected
Revisado: 12-28-20
As haunted house books go, this one was definitely above average. The characters were well developed while the story is being told (instead of wasting the first 25% to 50% of the book telling their backstories). The end was not what I expected. This was a story you could listen to while driving or performing menial tasks but it provokes thought. I was pleasantly surprised.
