Best of the new series
Revisado: 08-22-23
This is the 14th Stewart Hoag mystery and the 6th since the series started back up after a 20 year hiatus. This one is the best of the new batch and closest in tone to the original 8. It takes place between the first novel The Man Who Died Laughing and the second The Man Who Lived by Night. Detective Lamp returns, as Hoagy is back in LA trying to ghost a romance novel for a former MTV celebrity. The backstories of the celebrities are always interesting and this one is no different.
J.S. Arquin does a solid job but he does get a bit shouty at times. He is a major step up from the previous narrator. If you’re a fan of the series, I would rank Arquin in a tie for third place with Berkrot among previous narrators. He is serviceable but never gets close to challenging Stechschulte and Runnette.
If your a fan of the series or you’re looking for a good mystery this is worth your credit. David Handler is an amazing writer.

Historia
A 1955 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud is a fantastically expensive car, especially in the pristine condition of the one owned by Muriel Cantrell. Living in a luxury apartment building on Central Park West, the sweet 75-year-old woman is a neighbor of Merilee Nash, the beautiful movie star, and Stewart Hoag, whose first book was a sensation but whose career crashed when he became involved with drugs and alcohol. Divorced 10 years earlier, Hoagy has been welcomed back into Merilee's life and apartment. Residents are shocked when Muriel is murdered after a Halloween party.

Great mystery terrible narrator
Revisado: 02-23-22
The newest entry into the Hoagy series is hampered by an awful narrator. It’s easy to say after having 4 different narrators in this series that Tom Stechschulte is far and away the best. Kevin Rinner is the absolute worst. Sean Runnette and Peter Berkrot give solid performances in their outings. I see that Highbridge is a division of Recorded Books. If they want to do this series justice they need to release the original audio books with Stechschulte on Audible.
If you’re new to Hoagy and Lulu, pass on this audio book and buy the print version instead. If you want a decent audio experience from this series pick any of the other ones currently on Audible with Sean or Peter. Peter also does a really nice job on one of David Handler’s other mysteries, Runaway Man.
And to answer the question posed by Lickety Split. The new Hoagy mysteries are not in chronological order. The original 8 take place in order. The new books are supposed to happen sometime between The Man Who Would Be F Scott Fitzgerald and The Woman Who Fell From Grace. Baby Tracy does not appear until book 7 - The Girl Who Ran Away From Daddy. That’s why she does not appear in this book. She’s not been born yet.

Historia
A decade ago, Emily Carlino vanished after her car broke down on a California highway. She was presumed to be one of serial killer Ronny Lee Jessup’s victims whose remains were never found. Writer David Thorne still hasn’t recovered from losing the love of his life, or from the guilt of not being there to save her. Then David meets Maddison Sutton, beguiling, playful, and keenly aware of all David has lost. But what really takes his breath away is that everything about Maddison, down to her kisses, is just like Emily.

Terrible ending
Revisado: 04-01-21
The performance was really good. A shame it was wasted on this book. I was so excited for the new Dean Koontz and it’s pretty good for about half the novel and then it goes downhill fast. The ending was a joke. I love Dean Koontz and my favorite novels are all written by him. But it’s starting to feel like that since 2007 each of his books keep getting progressively worse. Don’t waste your credit on this. If you like his thrillers, get Velocity or The Husband instead.

Mike Hammer Forever!
Revisado: 03-19-19
I was very excited for this new Mike Hammer Mystery. Max Allan Collins does a great job of continuing the Mickey Spillane adventures. Like it says in the forward this one is a little more like the tv series compared to some of the “revenge” novels. I hope Max keeps writing them because they just keel getting better. I was also excited to see Stefan Rudnicki being the new narrator following John Dan Miller and of course Stacy Keach. Stefan has an amazing voice and is a perfect choice to take up the Mike Hammer mantle. I highly recommend this new Mike Hammer mystery!

Memphis, 1975. "Raunchy" doesn't begin to describe Max Climer's magazine, Climax, or his all-hours strip club, or his planned video empire. And evangelists, feminists, and local watchdog groups all want him out of business. But someone wants more than that, and has hired a killer to end Max's career permanently. Only another hit man - the ruthless professional known as Quarry - can keep Climer from becoming a casualty in the Sexual Revolution.

Quarry in Memphis
Revisado: 03-19-19
Another great Quarry adventure from Max Allan Collins. They are all so great I would hate to have to rank them. This one really gets into Quarry’s mind at the end and we see a moment when maybe Quarry could have left the business and led a normal life. This is a Broker story, so it takes place when Quarry works for the Broker. The Memphis setting adds a lot to the story and was probably chosen to match up with the Cinemax tv series. Stefan does an amazing job as the voice of Quarry.

On October 30, 1938, rising radio star Orson Welles boondoggles the American public into believing that Martians have attacked Earth. With his clever adaptation of The War of the Worlds, the great showman proves he can get away with anything - maybe even murder. Minutes before the fictitious invasion goes live on the air, a dead body is found in the studio and the polarizing Welles is the obvious suspect.

The Last Quarry
Revisado: 03-19-19
Quarry is forced out of retirement one late night to save a kidnapped girl. The adventure that follows is full of twists and turns. It is really interesting to see an older Quarry and what may be his final contract. Stefan is really great. I have really come to love him as the voice of Quarry in these audio books. This novel was also adapted into a movie called “The Last Lullaby.”
