In Unruly, David Mitchell explores how early England’s monarchs, while acting as feared rulers firmly guiding their subjects’ destinies, were in reality a bunch of lucky bastards who were mostly as silly and weird in real life as they appear today in their portraits.

Believe the many positive reviews. “Unruly” is majestic. It is hilarious. Though I read history in university, I learned more here than I did there.
Many books present what happened. And that’s great. But Mitchell goes farther. He explains and analyzes why things happened , and why they matter.
I hope he writes another book soon.

Historia
The World Series is the most enduring showcase in American team sports. It’s the place where legends are made, where celebration and devastation can hinge on a fly ball off a foul pole or a grounder beneath a first baseman’s glove. And there’s no one better to bring this rich history to life than New York Times national baseball columnist Tyler Kepner, whose bestselling book about pitching, K, was lauded as “Michelangelo explaining the brush strokes on the Sistine Chapel” by Newsday.

Highly entertaining
Revisado: 04-03-25
This is a masterful account of the World Series. The author succeeds in taking a point from, say, a game in the 2006 or 2014 Series and explaining how it compared or differed from one in the 1920s or 1950s. Clearly, Kepner knows the World Series. Indeed, I now believe that he knows everything about every World Series game.
I adored “The Grandest Stage” so much that I have already listened to it twice.
Kepner is also a splendid narrator. I felt so relaxed and interested listening to him describe the games and players, that at times I almost forgot it was a book. It seemed that a friend was telling me a compelling story. He narrates so enthusiastically that I was often surprised that an hour had passed though I thought I had been listening for only half that time.

Historia
Oklahoma City was born from chaos. It was founded in a bizarre but momentous "Land Run" in 1889, when thousands of people lined up along the borders of Oklahoma Territory and rushed in at noon to stake their claims. Since then, it has been a city torn between the wild energy that drives its outsize ambitions and the forces of order that seek sustainable progress.

The most compelling closing that I have ever heard
Revisado: 04-02-25
The first half I was worried. I wanted to like this audiobook. Because I couldn’t find a character that I liked, though, I just didn’t care about them.
But then I reached the four-hours to go mark. Suddenly, not only was I engaged, I was spellbound. Indeed, I listened to that final four hours without stopping once. I have never had an audiobook capture me that overwhelmingly.
And kudos for the best final line that I have ever heard.

Historia
Rick Atkinson recounts the first 21 months of America’s violent war for independence. From the battles at Lexington and Concord in spring 1775 to those at Trenton and Princeton in winter 1777, American militiamen and then the ragged Continental Army take on the world’s most formidable fighting force. Full of riveting details and untold stories, The British Are Coming is a tale of heroes and knaves, of sacrifice and blunder, of redemption and profound suffering. Rick Atkinson has given stirring new life to the first act of our country’s creation drama.

I can’t wait for the sequel
Revisado: 03-29-25
Atkinson is a master of his craft. Though he has written predominantly about World War II recently, this audiobook is so good that the author seemed a scholar of the Revolutionary War.
The work was so powerful, and I learned so much, that I grew enraged when I learned how terribly the British and Hessians treated American POWs. Nearly two-thirds of Americans taken prisoner after the Crown’s troops conquered Fort Washington on Manhattan. I had known none of this.
The narrator gives a wonderful performance. Rather than try to manage a slew of accents, he trusts the author’s sentence structure to make it abundantly clear who is speaking.
Originally, I read this four or five years ago. I then read it again in March 2025 to help me prepare for the April 2025 release of the second work in the trilogy. I can’t wait!

Historia
October 24th, 2023 will mark 20 years since Concorde disappeared from our skies. Yet still Mike Bannister, the last Concorde Chief Pilot, faces the same questions. Concorde is an enthralling personal account of what it takes to fly planes faster than the speed of sound, and of the events that lay behind 114 needless deaths—the 113 victims of the crash and, ultimately, Concorde herself.

Tense; Taut; Tears
Revisado: 03-10-25
The story was engrossing throughout the whole book. Indeed, to keep readers captivated about an accident that they all know is coming can’t be easy. Yet, Captain Bannister succeeds marvelously.
And that voice! My goodness. I have heard of nominative determinism. Perhaps it exists for pilots and their speech. It also makes for an ideal narrator.
I adored “Concorde”.

I adored this audiobook and recommend it heartily. Because I have no engineering or scientific background, I probably failed to apprehend the more technical parts. Yet, I still found the narrative fascinating. The author did a fine job balancing enough science and in-depth analysis and explanation, with a telling a good story for the general reader such as I.

Essential History
Revisado: 02-02-25
It must be difficult to tell the history of the country’s founding. Every child in the USA studies it in school. And after the musical “Hamilton”, even that lesser-known Founder is also a star.
Yet Winston Groom succeeds with “The Patriots.” He weaves together these three men’s lives in a tale that flows well and is always interesting.
I found the narrator’s voice quiet, but pleasant
I recommend the book.

Historia
In the early 1970s, Britain seemed to be tottering on the brink of the abyss. Under Edward Heath, the optimism of the '60s had become a distant memory. Now the headlines were dominated by strikes and blackouts, unemployment and inflation. As the world looked on in horrified fascination, Britain seemed to be tearing itself apart. And yet, amid the gloom, glittered a creativity and cultural dynamism that would influence our lives long after the nightmarish '70s had been forgotten.

Perfection
Revisado: 01-16-25
My first reaction is sadness that the book is done. I listened to this, “State of Emergency”, and Dominic’s book on British culture back to back to back. That is around 90 hours of Sandbrook and his truly outstanding narrator.
I adored every hour. I can’t think of any series that I enjoyed more than these.
I wish only that Audible would let me purchase Sandbrook’s audiobook on 1979-1982. Unfortunately, it is available only on Audible.co.uk.

Historia
By early 1977, New York City was in the grip of hysteria caused by a murderer dubbed "Son of Sam". And on a sweltering night in July, a citywide power outage touched off an orgy of looting and arson that led to the largest mass arrest in the city's history. As the turbulent year wore on, the city became absorbed in two epic battles: the fight between Yankee slugger Reggie Jackson and team manager Billy Martin, and the battle between Ed Koch and Mario Cuomo for the city's mayoralty.
