Great series. Questionable ending.
Revisado: 01-26-25
Overall, great. But when I find myself yelling at the characters about the most obvious solution, it starts to seem like the characters are being dumb just to add drama. it didn't happen often, which is why I liked the series, but it happens at the end.
Again, great writing overall and definitely an enjoyable listen.

Historia
Vienna-June 1804. At the glittering debut of Beethoven's Eroica Symphony, a Spanish diplomat meets with Captain Thomas Grey, agent of His Majesty's Secret Service. In exchange for a gigantic bribe, the Spaniard discloses Spain's most closely-held secret, the terms of its San Ildefonso Treaty with France. Spain's neutrality in Napoleon's war on Britain is only a ruse to keep the British navy from attacking the last great treasure-armada, now gathering in South America.

I think ive read every historical fiction for the age of sail. The events in this book are wonderfully original and doesn't rely on old tropes. I enjoyed it immensely.

When other men might be looking forward to a well-earned retirement to enjoy their ill-gotten gains, Flashman finds himself once more facing overwhelming odds and ruthless enemies, while standing (reluctantly) shoulder to shoulder with some of America’s greatest heroes. A trip abroad to avoid a scandal at home leaves him bored and restless. They say the devil makes work for idle hands, and Lucifer surpassed himself this time, as Thomas is persuaded to visit the newly independent country of Texas.

Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. It brims with cautionary wisdom for our times, and delivers a visceral, heart-pounding story that transports listeners to the brink of the unimaginable.

Woke
Revisado: 11-19-21
I stopped at the point where miss sharp shooter CIA agent saved the day with a pistol while three armed male soldiers coward behind a car. Chapter 5.
I'm all for strong women in stories, but this is really getting too unrealistic and I can only believe wokeness is going to ruin all aspects of this book.
Up to this point there was nothing redeeming about the character development or story line. So I checked the reviews and decided it wasn't going to get better.
I think an author should be allowed to wonder across genras, but a bad book is a bad book and this is one in my opinion.
If you think woke comedians are funny, the you might find this book interesting, but for normal people, be warned.

Can't believe this was the author's first book
Revisado: 06-03-21
I would have guessed this was a pen name for Dewey Lambdin. John Lee read most of his books and I thought the writing style was similar. It was excellent and different. Like Jason Borne meets Allen Lewrie meets Sharpe.
If I could knock the story at all, I would just say that people don't die so easily as this book would suggest. Hardly a big deal.

Historia
This seventh instalment in the memoirs of the Georgian rogue Thomas Flashman reveals that, despite his suffering through the Napoleonic Wars, he did not get to enjoy a quiet retirement. Indeed, middle age finds him acting just as disgracefully as in his youth, as old friends pull him unwittingly back into the fray. He re-joins his former comrade in arms, Thomas Cochrane, in what is intended to be a peaceful and profitable sojourn in South America.

Can't wait for the rest of the series. The only issue is the editing. There are out-takes of the narrator left in the audio. It's not a big deal, but I figure you should be forewarned.
