Historia
Martin Lorensen is a twenty-three-year-old counselor for disturbed teenagers. He’s bright, compassionate, attractive, and outgoing. He’s also—and this is the most interesting thing—not dead. Martin has improbably survived not one but two deadly disasters that claimed dozens of lives. The kid is riding one hell of a lucky streak. Two federal agents think there is something darker at play. Now that they’ve arranged to interview Martin, they want answers. Martin is ready to share everything he knows. One thing is for certain: when it comes to escaping death, luck doesn’t figure into it at all.

Black is the Night... BITN... Bitten? 🖤
Revisado: 04-10-24
Oh my GOD I am so excited that the sequel came out.
Black Is The Night opens exactly how you would expect it to, and brings us back into the brilliant chaotic mind (minds?) of its protagonists. This story takes us out from the backwoods of rural Tennessee and into the neon lights of the 'big city'.
With so many surprising laugh out loud moments, and a new antagonist that's equally as ancient and ridiculous as the last, BITN slaaaaaays. 🖤

Historia
This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

Read the book after watching g the trailer to the upcoming movie. WHOA! Absolutely great storytelling, and awesome way of taking classic things we know and throwing a (realistic) twist to them. Heck yeah! Gonna buy A.M.Shine’s next book now, and can’t wait to watch the movie!

Historia
In a quaint, rural town in northern Tennessee, self-proclaimed detective Ace Shades investigates a series of ongoing murders, somehow related to his dark, mysterious past—a past so dark and mysterious that even he doesn’t remember any of it. With the help of his colleagues, who are just as unreliable as he is, they uncover a conspiracy, involving a threat unlike any other before it—or at least any other threat they had faced before, assuming they had faced any other threat at all.

Wait, what? 🙌🏼 (LOVED IT!)
Revisado: 11-29-23
This book is truly one of a kind. It’s part mystery, part drama, part end of the world satire, and definitely a cult followed masterpiece in the making.
Theodore Lee is THE author to look out for. His characters are quirky and unique with a depth to them that gets more layered the further in you go. Humor is prominent in the story and Justin Mills does a great job in bringing the narration to life. So much so that I’d catch myself randomly laughing really loud (to any random stranger’s confusion). I found this book a complete mind bending joy.
Get this book. It’s seriously one of my all time favorites now.

Historia
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Corny AF; but so bad it's actually enjoyable?
Revisado: 03-28-23
This book had me pausing to laugh at supposed serious moments, screaming across the room to tell my husband some unrealistic response a main character just made, and literally laughing my way through exaggerated stereotypes of old 'scary' movies and cardboard cutout characters. This book felt like a cash grab, and made me feel very confident that anything could be published if you just slap an award winning name one the front of it.
The bad reviews to this book are pretty spot on, but for all those reasons I actually enjoyed listening to this thing as a Sasquatch parody. All while cleaning. I would never waste my time physically reading this book. Absolutely not. But listening as a parody when you need a break from mystery is pretty enjoyable to laugh.
Definitely recommended to those who think Marvel's Captain America: Civil War is the height of cinematic creativity. =) You're definitely the target audience.

Revisado: 04-29-22
Ok, let me preface this by saying that I’m a big fan of We’re Alive.the same audio production and quality voice acting is present here as well.
But I’m a little disappointed with the story here…Spoiler warning!

Was it necessary to make the black guy a drug user and have him killed off?
And on top of that, make his murder suspect the only other person of color?
Just seems lazy and a bit off-putting tbh.
Would really like to have seen this go differently - it had a lot of potential for sure.

Jamie Canning has never been able to figure out how he lost his closest friend. Four years ago, his tattooed, wisecracking, rule-breaking roommate cut him off without an explanation. So what if things got a little weird on the last night of hockey camp the summer they were 18? It was just a little drunken foolishness. Nobody died.

Why am I crying?
Revisado: 04-26-22
Yeah, so I’m a cancer. I cry during gum commercials. But never have I ever teared up during a frickin’ sex scene.
This book was written with some great character development, and as a gay man who prefers intimacy over unrealistically carnal video clips found online, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It had the perfect balance of emotional edging and intimately fueled hubba hubba time.
10/10, I hope they eventually make a movie. Fingers crossed the sequel is just as good. 🥰

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Hauntingly accurate.
Revisado: 01-22-21
This book was fun and addicting. And by "fun" I mean it kept me on the edge of my seat a lot of the time, warmed my heart at parts, and gave me chills down my back as I willed myself to not fast forward to the end.
I've seen a few reviews saying they didn't find this book realistic (negative reviews are always fun), and that they were too offended by its "negative view of religion". I absolutely disagree. Having been raised around a religious cult, this book was VERY realistic to me. Religion can harm just as much as it can help, and if you find yourself offended by the faith stuff maybe ask a stranger if your religious views are considered "traditional" or just straight up "cultic". Do you have friends outside your community of faith? Hmm...
Anyway, the story bounces back and forth between two timelines, so you get to observe the trial and ALSO the sixteen (or so) years that led there. Mari Howes does a great job leaving hints and giving the reader pieces of information that they can dwell on and look forward to.
All in all... great book. ESPECIALLY in the day and age of false news and conspiracy theories that threaten the minds of people we love.

It was fun. It was slow. It was confusing. It was incredible! And now that I'm done, I want to listen again. Seriously, I bought the hard copy today and am flipping through the drawings as I write this review. Dis some good sh*t.
But yeah, get the book. Give it a try. It mixes in so many genres and writing styles in a way that I've never seen before. Plus it's taking queer characters and giving them a story that doesn't define them by their sexuality. =) Yay progress!
