Funny, revealing, and not mean. Phil seemed like a nice guy. I hadn’t realized how funny he was. I also loved the trip down memory lane, being reminded of episodes and then feeling compelled to revisit them on YouTube. I loved the “inside looks”, too. I very well may listen again not too long from now.

One of the worst books about a serial killer to which I’ve ever listened. Dahmer was one of the most malicious and notorious, and the book was too short in duration. It seemed like just a collection of facts. No story. No character analysis of Dahmer (or of his victims). No portrait. No depth. At a certain point in the book, I just finished it just to finish it. Save your credit and your time.

What did you love best about Quiet?

I loved the author's reliance on RESEARCH, something that is hardly ever overused nowadays.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

The research finding that introverts and extroverts have, on average, the same amount of good ideas. Just that extroverts, because of their nature, are more likely to be heard.

Any additional comments?

The book's an all-around poignant, well-argued statement (and question) on our society's ill-advised and over-rated reliance on all things extroverted.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I think that athletes or those currently in the military or paramilitary organizations would enjoy this book more than I did. However, I would STRONGLY caution them to supplement it with detailed and thorough instructions on HOW to practice the techniques and exercises. Better yet, one could cut out the middle man and simply initially seek out ONLY those resources.

If you’ve listened to books by D. C. Gonzalez before, how does this one compare?

N/A

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of D. C. Gonzalez?

I cannot think of a famous person off-hand whom I would have cast as narrator, however the author would have done well to have chosen practically ANY OTHER NARRATOR than himself. Gonzalez reads the book in a monotonous, droning, almost sleep-inducing manner. Additionally, the audio editing/producing was very substandard. It honestly seemed as if Gonzalez recorded the entire program a sentence or two at a time, after which it was also "pasted" together, a disturbance to which it took nearly two chapters to get accustomed.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Art of Mental Training?

This book does not have an "excess" problem, rather it greatly lacks instruction. It does not show the reader HOW to perform the different parts of mental training, it only stresses its importance, sometimes a LIFE-OR-DEATH importance: Gonzalez give an anecdote of his time in military flight training during a chapter of the book, saying that it's not uncommon for some applicants to DIE during one particular training exercise, in part, because they lack a particular "mental training" skill. Then, he fails to give thorough, step-by-step instructions of HOW to practice and perfect that skill. Heaven forbid someone planning to be in such situations relies on this book to prepare them. This book is only a "guide", indeed. Instruction, instruction, instruction.

Any additional comments?

The way the self-help process is interwoven with the story of how Gonzalez's wise coach taught him the techniques, is, admittedly, above-average and charming.

What did you love best about Commit to Win?

I loved how the book provided RESEARCH to support its claims. So much of the self-help literature spouts steps, techniques, and processes to make its statements, often only using anecdotes. Dr. Reeder used ONLY research (and a great deal of it, I might add) to give its listener four "no BS" elements that a person can actively work within to increase or decrease his or her commitment to whatever they choose.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked how the final chapters gave the step-by-step, workbook-fashion instructions of how to use the four elements to increase or decrease one's commitment. I truly dislike when self-help books fill their contents with preaching and motivation while lacking (sometimes COMPLETELY) instructions on how to perform that things promised.

Have you listened to any of Heidi Reeder PhD’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I have read nothing else by this author with which to compare this book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. Admittedly, the book is not "sexy" or engaging a way that makes it irresistible to press pause and take a break. Justly so; I think of it more as an "instruction manual". After reading it, I made definite plans to return to the final chapters to work through the step.

Probably first or second.

What did you like best about this story?

The author's writing is laugh-out-loud funny!

What about Tina Fey’s performance did you like?

Fey's voice serves to add more hilarity to the story.
